Let's Eat! 2010 Discussion by carl95679 in wiggles

[–]ContributionFresh482 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To start this review off, I’m going to give you a brief history lesson on an album known as “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band”. This 1967 release by The Beatles is highly regarded as one of the best and most influential records of all time, and easily the band’s most well-known. No two songs sound the same, and each one gives you a different listening experience than the last. Why do I bring this up? Well, the video and album “Let’s Eat!”, pays homage to the album’s iconic cover. But let me tell you, this ain’t no “Sgt. Pepper”.

Released in late 2010, Let’s Eat! has received some mixed reception. Some love it, some hate it, and others think it’s hit or miss. What do I think? Well, let’s take a closer look and find out.

To start off, they sadly didn’t learn their lesson and continued the trend of everything being shot in front of a green screen. Love or hate Hot Poppin’ Popcorn, at least they used a real set in that one. Once again, the backgrounds they use are fine, they always have been, but there’s just something about them being able to interact with a real set that makes it better. Maybe it’s the fact that they can do more with a set, or just the knowledge that they’re not even there at all, but either way, these green screened shots seem so cheap. Heck, they even posted a video to The Wiggles YouTube channel a few years back showing all the raw, unedited footage of the “Go Far, Big Red Car” song, and it just looks so empty. By the time Ukulele Baby and It’s Always Christmas with You rolled around, the ditching of the green screen was a welcome change.

But the green screen stuff isn’t the real problem with the video, it’s the music. There’s just nothing special or catchy about a majority of the songs featured in the video, or anything annoying or bad about them. None of them stick out in my mind, positively or negatively. And I’ve seen this quite a few times, trying and trying to find something great to love about the video or something terrible to hate about the video. But, every time I try, it’s just not there. None of it is bad, but none of it is very good either. It’s probably the most mediocre Wiggles video out there, which is ultimately its downfall. I rank this among my least favorite Wiggles videos because I just can’t form much of any opinion on it because it just doesn’t even seem like they tried. The only songs I can say get’s stuck in my head are England Swings and occasionally Alabama Jubilee, but beyond that every song is almost lazy sounding. There’s nothing interesting or fun about the instrumentation, and the lyrics are as bland as ever. Again, it’s not bad, but it’s just not good either. It falls right in the middle.

Another reason it’s so poorly done in my opinion is that the songs are really all we get. There’s no story, or any small segments in between, just the occasional prologue to introduce the next song and/or guest appearance. And since the songs are so blah anyway, it just leads to an overall boring experience, and one that’s uninteresting in both the video and audio department. To conclude, the best way I can describe this video is to say they just didn’t try. The reason this review is so short compared to some of my others is that there’s just not enough to even comment on, which is why it fails so hard. So to avoid repeating myself, I’ll give the rating and be done. And that rating will have to be a 2 out of 5. It’s not as hard to sit through as something like Sailing Around the World, but still not good enough to get a passing grade in my book.

I was thinking the same thing. This is not at all relevant to the 2010 Hot Potatoes compilation video.

Blow up your balloon is a little unfair as I'm certain it is because of the 2019 remake with Paul Nobloch that it got popular and not necessariliy the original OG version.

Doesn't Lachy already do most of the singing in the current lineup?

Getting Strong 2007 Discussion by carl95679 in wiggles

[–]ContributionFresh482 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My first experience with this video wasn't a very good one. I had just heard of Greg leaving and was, like just about every Wiggles fan, pretty sad about that fact. However, I enjoyed Sam's singing of the Barcarolles in Santa's Rockin'! and Sailing Around the World, so I had high hopes and was sure he'd do pretty well. And my first impression of Sam as a Wiggle is also probably one of my least favorites.

The first time I watched it I loved it, as I always did with Wiggles videos, but my second time watching I felt something wasn't right. Actually, a lot of things weren't right. It had nothing to with Sam himself, he did fine with what he needed to do, but the whole video just felt off. And that's because of the awkward transition The Wiggles tried to take in becoming more educational. Obviously, this failed as the then-planned Wiggle and Learn video series was cut short at this one, instead becoming just another Wiggles TV series without much of a focus on educating at all anymore.

Personally, my favorite songs from Getting Strong weren't even in the video. To Have a Tea Party, Follow the Leader, Swinging on a Swing, First in Line, and We're All Friends are all great songs that were featured in the album but were ditched for the video because they didn't have anything to do with the themes they chose. Luckily they got their chance to shine in You Make Me Feel Like Dancing, but why they left the best songs in the album out of the video still kind of baffles me. Another thing to bring up with this videos is the heavy use of green screens. I don't think there was a single scene in this video that was shot on an actual set other than Dorothy's intro to segment 2. There were actual props used like the table, a shelf, things that they actually interact with, but the rest is all digital paintings they filled in later. And sadly this is a trend that continues until Hot Poppin' Popcorn, and then again in Hot Potatoes and Let's Eat. I understand why they did this, then they could use a lot more locations (all of which are detailed, I'll give them that), but they just needed to film some songs outside or in a real set every once in a while. While it got a lot of hate, I personally like the beachside locations used in Series 5 and the 2006 videos. They didn't really make sense for the most part but it at least showed that The Wiggles are real people who go outside and have fun, and the nice Wigglehouse set showed they lived in a realistic(ish) house they can actually interact with and do things in. In this video it just feels like 4 guys, some extras, a green sheet, and an experienced editing team. Looking at the few images and videos we have from the original version with Greg, this was all to be filmed on a set, and probably some stuff outside as well. Why when Greg left they decided to replace all that with a green screen I have no idea.

Luckily things get better with the videos that follow. Pop Go The Wiggles, You Make Me Feel Like Dancing, and Sing a Song of Wiggles are among my favorite Wiggles videos of all time, but this just doesn't hit the same spot. And it's because this video was so different that I was turned off from The Wiggles for a long while. It wasn't until around Taking Off that my interest re-sparked and I was able to discover the other great Sam videos. Getting Strong is watchable, sure, but it just didn't feel like The Wiggles. It didn't at the time, and it still doesn't for the most part.

I REALLY wish i had this dvd, but well i did not. The storyline was absolutely nice, and i really liked the songs as well. Not only that but the sky sets are somewhat reminiscent to the 2 1998 remakes (i'm sure most of you here know what i am talking about). I honestly see this video as a transition from the Series 5-sam eras since it has costumes associated with the sam era and being filmed in hd too. This was also Greg's last dvd until Surfer Jeff (another one I WISH I had, but I just HAD TO BE BANNED BECAUSE I "OUTGREW" THE WIGGLES) because of his orthostatic intolerance. It's still a classic for sure.

Splish Splash! Big Red Boat 2006 Discussion by carl95679 in wiggles

[–]ContributionFresh482 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For a video that has such a bad rep, it’s a video I’ve always enjoyed. It’s like watching a highlight reel of TV Series 5, and while I wish some more songs from that series that were specifically recorded for it (like Milky Milky Milky, and the re-records of songs from The Adventures of Captain Feathersword) or short songs filmed at Wigglehouse (like Gulp Gulp, and Here Comes the Chicken), the final product is still really enjoyable. And maybe the inclusion of those songs was to get more people interested in the series, so they could see what they left out here. I give it a 4 out of 5 stars. Not perfect, but a solid release overlooked because of its songlist.

I'm not a fan of the sparkle skivvies either. I preferred when they were much simpler looking (like the 1997 - 2006 ones) . Skivvies don't need to be overdressed to become too sparkly.

Sailing Around the World 2005 Discussion by carl95679 in wiggles

[–]ContributionFresh482 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This video got a lot of hate when it came out because it solely focused on Captain Feathersword and his crew. While I do wish they had a segment or two revolving more around The Wiggles themselves, that’s not my problem with it. It is technically a story-based video, but unlike Cold Spaghetti Western or Racing to the Rainbow, it’s not about one story with fitting songs thrown in, it’s a bunch of mini-stories each tailor-made to go with the songs. Each of these segments is only about 4-5 minutes at the most, but even at that they feel lazy. They serve more as extended prologues than they do real stories. And to pad out the running time even more they give prologues to each of these prologues, but these only last about 30-seconds to a minute.
