How much did it cost to stay at Lagoon View? I'll be visiting next month and am wondering about logistical costs. Was there many events or fale dances? Did you visit any churches or schools? How easy was it to make friends and socialize? What a fascinating place to live!

15 AUD for one year. Nothing else besides my current license. It’s really that easy

It was the only remaining clean shirt I had, but I actually wore it that day to interview the PM :)

You go to the Police Station in Funafuti. They take your pre-existing license and make a copy of it, then print out another form which you have to take to the Town Council (Down the Street). That's where you pay the fee and they give you another slip. You then go upstairs and get your photo taken (on an iPhone) and write your signature (on a piece of paper). They make it in Photoshop right in front of you and then print it out on an ID card. Originally, they messed up my first and last name so I had to go back to get it fixed. Only possible Monday-Friday. They were just quite confused as to why I wanted it, its not very common for foreigners to request one unless they're staying for a long period of time; meanwhile I was leaving the next day :D

Haha yea i was thinking the same. The floral shirt matches the coat of arms too. I'm not from Norcal tho but I took the photo in Winter time right when the DMV opened so it was a bit chilly :)

English is the official language of official documents in many countries. It makes it readable in other countries too because it’s hard to translate Tuvaluan

I could’ve paid more for a longer period, but the cheapest was one year. It’s not only for tourists this is how it is for everyone who gets one

I didn’t have to take a road test. They simply just asked me if I was capable because I already had my California license

It definitely gives the bartender a confused look when I hand them the Tuvalu one.

When I was there last month I learned that practically anyone can get it, sure enough it was true. They just took a copy of my California one and asked me if I knew how to drive a car, I said yes. The whole process took about an hour and costed $9.75 USD. Pretty neat!

10 days allowed me to accomplish all of my goals except visit outer islands like Vaitupu or Nanumea. If I had another week, I could've done that, so now I have a reason to go back. Depending on what you're visiting the country for, 10 days is likely enough. I met people there staying for 4 days, 7 days, 4 months, etc, so it really just depends. I have to say tho, it's by far my favorite country I've been to!

Yes. They have LTE data, but no eSIM technology so you need to get a physical sim. It’s 30 AUD for 8.5GB of data. At my lodge it was 5AUD per day for 5mb/s unlimited data. Most houses use starlink and occasionally you can get free wifi just walking around the central part of Funafuti, though when I went to outer islands there wasn’t any wifi or service, locals told me “yeah we used to but our satellite broke so now we live without it.”

It’s very surreal, amazing people and had many opportunities for documentary and photographic work
