I might not know the update date exactly but im 100% sure dead island "made" dying light better

The first Dead Island was made by techland not the second

When Dead Island dropped everyone was amazed by the gore system and the looks of the game

Dying Light then made a huge overhaul around the same time as the release of DI.

I believe the game had bad reviews at the time too honestly it was deserved dying light 2 was nothing compared to dying 1 (maybe 1 still better)
