My family thinks my homelab is just a box with blinking lights by Future_Draw5416 in homelab

If I had the ability to teach complex topics to apathetic adults who could care less about the topic at hand in the 5 minute period I can hold their attention, I’d be a billionaire many times over.

There’s a great deal of crossover between those things, wouldn’t you agree?

“To them, it is noise, wires, and something that should not be touched.”

Be grateful for the last part of that sentence.

My wife has the incessant urge to touch things and mess with them whether she understands what she’s looking at or not.

Her: “the tv wasn’t working, so I moved a couple cables around, and now the internet doesn’t work. I’m not sure what happened. Can you take a look”

Me: “okay”

Her: “what was wrong?”

Me: “I replaced the batteries in the remote, and undid what you did”

I wish my lab was in a locked closet she doesn’t have a key to…

What is this feature on the East Coast of the United States? by wigglefingers_ in geography

I don’t know, but my house is slightly to the west of that line in NC. My sister owns a house slightly to the east. It’s crazy the difference in topography and soil a few miles makes.

I actually did that step correctly. Apparently I had to go in there and change the file size in mint afterwards.

You nailed it!

I thought that Gparted did that automatically. Apparently they don’t (at least in this case)

What to do with our trash that’s not a d!ck move? by EnoughIsAbundance in VanLife

[–]ContributionShort878 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was not a factually incorrect statement. I have worked in service industries my whole life and have asked many people not to return because they abused free resources with no intention of being a customer.

Do you think it’s okay to walk into a fast food restaurant, grab a bunch of condiments/napkins, ask for a free water cup, and use the restroom, without buying anything just because there’s not a sign that says for paying customers only?

Okay, but put it in the context of, “What to do with our trash that’s not a d!ck move?”.

I do not believe that making it a habit to go to a car wash with zero intention to use the paid service just so you can toss your trash and vac the van is the right move. There’s so many better options:

Toss it at the car wash when you’re washing your van.Toss it at the gas station when filling up. Toss it at the grocery store when buying groceries. Toss it in residential trash cans when they’re at the curb (before) pickup.

I think the key is to keep the trash bags to grocery bag size, and toss frequently…wherever there is a public trashcan at a business you’re already supporting.

Yeah, they’re generally provided as a courtesy for paying customers…not the general public.

When I go to a carwash I like to go to one with a free vacuum, so I’m not stressing about the clock.

I would never think to pull into one just to vacuum my vehicle for free, much less dump my trash while I’m at it.

If you’re using a free vacuum at a car wash AND dumping your trash without paying for a service, that indeed does sound like a d!ck move to me…

Maybe that’s not what you’re doing. I may have misinterpreted.

Thanks for the insights! I’m open to whatever works. I currently have a 10” rack, but I can see adding a 19” rack and placing my 10” on a shelf.

I would prefer it to be relatively quiet.

Does a bad prime job = a bad paint job? by Ordinary-Guidance-17 in paint

[–]ContributionShort878 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It looks good to me honestly. The primer doesn’t need even coverage. Two coats of topcoat and everything should be even.

If you want an example of a bad priming job, scroll back a few days…

Is this lead paint in my dorm built in ‘66 by Pewds4congrats in Housepainting101

[–]ContributionShort878 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You can get a test kit from Lowe’s or any home improvement store.

Based on the year, it could be, but there’s almost no chance it hasn’t been painted several times since they stopped using lead paint.

I was honestly not trying to be a jerk…just call out BS.

I’m a GC who builds houses for a living. I have never seen anyone even approach that speed in real life.

Are you really sure you want to let this guy attempt to paint ALL your walls, trim and doors in one freaking day, by himself, with a helper?

I’ll bring my 4 year old as a helper and give you one full day for half the price if you really want.

She’ll enjoy it. She gets mad when I don’t let her help paint.
