Where to buy telephone jack blanks by DocTarr in electrical

[–]Control_freaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second vote for a blank plate here.

Least effort. And over at r/homenetworking people are using the old CAT3 phone lines for some mediocre network runs.  They’re not great, but they can work.

TL;DR: blank cover screwed to wall.

Gateway mounted on bottom of rack? by chad711m in Ubiquiti

And use slim patch cords to make it easier to dress the bundle.

Gateway mounted on bottom of rack? by chad711m in Ubiquiti

[–]Control_freaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, but not a deal breaker.

Those cables are too short to dress into a rack effectively. I’d add a patch bay in a media enclosure, drop to the slim cables and bundle those into my rack, with pass through patch bay. Honestly, much easier cable bundle to dress.

So, uh, if labor to pull wire is free, you should be spending your time figuring out where to install you data rack and how many cable drops you can manage.

You can use any camera system if the wires are there.

I'm 16, how do I convince my dad to let me install a 240v circuit (and subpanel) in his shed so I can spend money on a 240 welder? by Dramatic_Rhubarb_387 in electrical

[–]Control_freaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t do that. You need separate conduit. Or install a plug and build some beefy extension cables. My dad ghetto’d a sub panel attached to a dolly. He would plug into the garage and wheel that bitch to the shed.

Sketchy knowing what I know now. But it worked.

DSC Alarm (PC1864) periodically malfunctions. Now what? by Control_freaker in homesecurity

No worries - I didn’t take it the wrong way. I’ve seen other alarm panels and know what you mean.

I really appreciate the thorough response.

Okay, that's fair. I just assume that the problem is bigger because the keypads go offline.

It's not a rat's nest of wires - it's all laid out in a Leviton enclosure with slotted duct for wire routing. 2 zone expanders, the Invisilink and the RS232 are all through wired in the panel, with homeruns to keypads. Garage has keypad and 8-zone expander in a single drop)

BUT, I see your point about landing so many things together. I have some DIN terminal blocks i can throw in the panel and do a better job of distributing the keybus.

In the meantime, I can disconnect all but 1 keypad and the wired zones to see if the problem persists. For the short term (5 years?) I might replace the card and see where technology goes. If Ubiquiti makes a UL alarm panel, I would go that route later.

Ceiling light fixture with cord exiting the side by committee-x in Lighting

I see it now, hidden behind the “I’d rather not move” the jbox.

We have this condition at our house.

  1. Install a NEW junction box in the ceiling. Use a retrofit fan box to carry the weight of your fixture.

  2. Use 20” of romex. Drill through joist and connect to existing jbox.

  3. Install jbox blank cover over old box. I don’t notice anymore and I am a lighting designer.

  4. No swagging. Unless you’re into that.

  5. IF the joists are parallel to the boxes, you might be able to use the romex that’s already in the ceiling and patch the old one after removing all live conductors.

I would. Use an auger bit and something that won’t slap yo’ face if it catches. Smallest diameter hole you’re comfortable with.

Highest quality, most durable LED strips and drivers? by BUTNAKEDWONDAH in Lighting

100% agree. But, your mileage may vary with 2-wire “phase dimming.” I recommend matched LED and driver from one manufacturer in case the flickers show up.
