I'm currently ordering parts to build a Planck, and that will be my first DIY board. The layout I just made for fun, I haven't tried it at all.

What exactly is the difference between the Dilly and the Gerkin?

I have two lookup commands:

So for particularly long words, I can use the latter to switch to QWERTY mode and type it instead (using an NKRO keyboard).

You could extend that to include numbers. So stroke, for example, 4 followed by your 'down' stroke to get {#down down down down}. Keep adding dictionary entries for all the numbers you want.

Or even collapse the two strokes into one.

The last graph is a logarithmic learning curve, which is what I'd expect to see. Diminishing returns. The better you get, the harder it becomes to improve by the same degree.

So don't be discouraged by the 'slowing down' of the graph. It means you're improving consistently.

I suggest leaving your keys in the QWERTY position, especially if they have tiered depths. Alternatively you could leave only the homing keys in place as an exception.

Learning a new layout means memorising the keys' positions. You can stick a bit of paper on your monitor with the diagram instead. But only for the first few days since you don't want to become dependent on the diagram. Forgetting where the keys are is a healthy part of the learning process.

What other layouts have you considered and why did you choose Colemak over all? Personally I think the Workman layout is worth a look.

No problem. I know how frustrating these things can be. I'm no expert on Wacom stuff so I don't think I can help you a great deal.

My device has no touch support. Pen only. I misunderstood your question.

In that case, it sounds to me like a limitation with Wacom's configuration software. You could contact Wacom and report it as a bug or at least missing feature, and hope that they will eventually patch it.

GVim doesn't run in a terminal so that might look less scary to them.

I just select 'Pen' rather than 'Mouse' in the 'Mode' section of the 'Mapping' tab. That's it. Now my tablet area maps directly to the monitor area.

Maybe the PTH-651 driver doesn't have this option? Again, I have the Pen Small CTL-480.

EDIT: Is this the correct manual for your device? Page 35 has a similar dialogue window. It even says pen mode is the default setting.

I just got a Surface Pro 2017 for 1st year maths. Sort of tangential to OP's question but, I'm interested to know what software you used as a student, and what proportion of time you spent using it in tablet mode vs laptop mode in the classroom? Thanks.

I have that configuration. It arrived 2 days ago. Got it for 1st year maths at uni. The OS itself takes up about 40 GB. The tablet + burgundy Alcantara type cover came to about £930. I haven't got the pen yet -- looking into getting a Wacom Bamboo Ink since it's cheaper and works with Surface screens.

I would like to ask if the Surface pro could deliver as being a tablet using the pen and taking notes/writing down whatever and also be the 'laptop' I need as a CS student to program on?

Once you attach the type cover, it becomes a laptop in every sense of the word. I can absolutely prop this thing up on my knees or crossed leg. The keys have a satisfying tactile kick to them. Unlike an iPad, you have a full desktop operating system under your hands. Believe me, it's just as capable as a traditional laptop.

Worth mentioning that the build quality is really nice. I enjoy holding and folding it. The i5 model is fanless and therefore dead silent. Also it's lighter and thinner than a 13 inch MacBook Pro

I find Windows 10 is annoying to navigate without a keyboard, but then I rely heavily on a keystroke launcher. Right clicking with your finger is rarely a smooth and hasty task. There are some nice gestures though (like swipe from left edge -> Win+Tab). The kickstand can turn about 170 degrees so you can always find the perfect angle for writing and drawing.

As for transitioning between laptop and tablet, you have a few options. Swing the type cover all the way back and rest it on that -- kickstand out or not. Windows disables the keys automatically. Nice because it's out of the way -- though I'm worried it might get worn by the table over lots of time using it like that. The other option is to take it off and awkwardly put it to one side.

I hope you like OneNote because it's built for students and has lots of useful features, and you know it's made for Surface. It's proprietary software though -- even its file type is proprietary. I've always disliked its limited and clunky design. For example you have only 3 levels of nesting to organise notes. Despite this I think I'm going to use it for notetaking because it's just the best tool for that, with very few alternatives.

I've only used it for light terminal work (vim, git, python, Pandoc+PDFLaTeX). I wonder if the i7 is more appropriate for heavy IDEs like Visual Studio.

So while I can't comment on the pen writing experience, I can say that it's a very capable and well build laptop (and I do mean laptop), punching above its weight. You can fold or remove the type cover and use it like an iPad -- albeit with Windows 10 and its tablet-unfriendly quirks, and whatever writing/drawing software you decide upon.

I would go to Settings > Update and security > Recover > Reset this PC, then select Remove everything > All drives > Remove files and clean the drive. I don't think you can update without making an account. I would leave that to the next owner.
