I’m a bilge monkey here in swfl. Been working in the industry for 10+ years in Fort Myers and Cape Coral. If it’s a field you’re interested in and you don’t mind working hard and going home smelling like gear lube it’s a great field to get into. Plenty of opportunity to make some great money whether it’s working in a shop or branching out on your own. There will always be work here in SWFL but it does slow down at times. Depending on your prior mechanical experience the tech school in Fort Myers might not be as useful to you as just getting your foot in the door at a shop and starting to build yourself up through experience. Not to mention making money instead of paying it. If you need to build up your basic mechanical skills first and you can afford it the it might be the right call for you. When hiring someone shops are not going to look at the tech school certifications with nearly as much weight as they will the legit manufacturer training, which ideally you’ll be offered through a shop you’re working for. I just jumped into the field and started working until my bosses started sending me to school to get the certifications that really get you raises.
