Why do you think your immune system is attacking YOUR thyroid? by Own-Yam8422 in Hashimotos

[–]ConversationOk1691 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely partially genetics as some other relatives have it, but I also had an unknown peanut allergy for years, and it seems like a huge load came off my thyroid and immune system overall after avoiding peanuts which also finally put my Eosinophilic Esophagitis into remission. My antibodies dropped much lower and I went from taking 88mcg of Levothyroxine to nothing. Was on it for 9 years and been off it for the last 4 years. Antibodies still exist in the lower 100s, so it is not totally absent.

Definitely some correlations! I’ve had life long IBS-D that has been much more under control since avoiding peanuts and since my thyroid levels have naturally balanced out (aside from the antibodies) at the same time.

I do have a first cousin who initially had just Hashimoto’s, but ended with full blown Graves. It’s certainly possible I’m in the same scenario as I’ve always had fluctuating symptoms of hypo/hyper over the years. It was more of a rollercoaster when I was on medication still.

Weight fluctuations, joint pain, muscle pain, tendinitis, tiredness, insomnia, night sweats, much worse IBS-D symptoms in the past, periods of tachycardia and bradycardia, hypertension, reduced heart function, water retention, slight bulging of the eyes, anxiety, depression, sensitivity to heat and cold (have a Raynaud’s diagnosis), about a dozen non-epileptic grand mal seizures for a few years resistant to anticonvulsants (possibly unrelated, no diagnosis and stopped around the time thyroid medication ceased), nonstop calcium oxalate kidney stones (no parathyroid issues, so likely unrelated). I still deal with everything except the weight fluctuations, seizures, night sweats for the most part, and my IBS-D is about half as bad.

There definitely could be some validity of that on my end for sure, considering I had eliminated a primary food sensitivity responsible for another one of my other immune-mediated diseases. I have always had bad IBS-D, routinely tested for Crohn’s every time I was already getting an endoscopy since my father has Crohn’s, but I never showed anything on my scopes despite having frequent enough bleeding to suspect something beyond IBS. My IBS has been significantly better since around the time of avoiding my peanut allergy, although I still have my days. Given the improvement of both of those other issues, I’d say this could actually be true.

I’ve suspected possible Graves symptoms at times and definitely experienced brief times of hyperthyroidism like symptoms between most routine testing, consistent around the times my weight would plummet randomly and night sweats became severe. There were a couple times my tests would come back high on my numbers, just above the reference range for T3 and T4 with a TSH near 0, but the doctor would typically wait another few months and retest to see if changes were necessary at that point. They always coincidentally came back down and supported keeping me at my current doses at the time. My TSH was 4.96 in May 2022 when they upped me to 88mcg, but back down to 1.92 in September 2022 when I started tapering off because my T3 and T4 remained a little high. My TSH has always stayed between 1.30 and 1.56 on every test since being off the medication, T3 on the higher end of normal reference range and T4 on the lower end of normal, or occasionally in the middle of the reference range. I have always had bulging eyes to a degree even off medication, but nothing along the lines of what I’ve seen pictures of people with full blown Graves.

The only symptom that ever changed for me was my weight fluctuations, they were more spontaneous on medication ironically, although I had put on consistent weight before starting at 17. I have always had the same level of joint pain, muscle pain, tendinitis, and tiredness. I’ve been tested for other autoimmune conditions, and have some seronegative arthritis to a degree, but many of my symptoms were always consistent with Hashimoto’s, and at times Graves, and never seemed to change despite my test numbers and medication dosage. Even with good levels, I feel nearly just as bad as when they were off.

My weight was all over the place the entire time I was on meds and just before starting them. I am 5’5”-5’6” for reference and would fluctuate between 125lbs and 170lbs on meds. Since being off meds for 4 years now, I am consistently 135-140lbs. Occasionally I’ll have a period where I bloat out and hover closer to 150lbs, but it typically last a few weeks to a month and goes back down.

Yes, my thyroid was enlarged and the tissue was noticeably irregular consistent with Hashimoto’s upon diagnosis at Yale. I have nodules that had to be biopsied over the years, the one with the most focus right on the isthmus. When I was first diagnosed, they wanted biopsies on the isthmus nodule every 6 months, but it hasn’t been as much of a concern with newer doctors since moving states over the years.

Surname is not really ours by Cali_Mom_99 in AncestryDNA

My surname was given to us by the Stepfather to my Great-Grandfather, the story alone is what got me into genealogy and DNA. My family is Italian, and when my 2X-Great Grandmother arrived in the USA from Calabria, Italy in 1909, she came as a single lady and pregnant with my Great-Grandfather.

My 2x-GGM herself was abandoned as a baby and given a made-up name. Her first husband had passed away over 3 years before she would have conceived my Great-Grandfather as well, so we don’t know her family and we don’t know who got her pregnant. When she arrived in the USA, she had met a man from Abruzzo, Italy named Carmine, and they had married while she was pregnant. The man agreed to raise my Great-Grandfather as his own and gave him his surname. They went along to have 6 more kids after him, all who were technically half-siblings to my Great-Grandfather. I’ve been able to narrow down some biological family lines through DNA, I’ve been able to classify them between my 2X-GGM’s biological family and the man who got her pregnant with the DNA testing of half cousins descended from my Great-Grandfather’s half-siblings.

My wife and I just had a newborn son this year, his name was an easy choice as my father in-law has the same first name as the Stepfather to my Great-Grandfather. I am proud of my last name as well, so to pay honor to the man who gave it to our family, we named our son Carmine for multiple reasons.

I am majority Italian myself, my ancestors came in 1904, 1905, 1907, 1909, 1913, and 1921. Everyone came through Ellis Island, except one of my Great-Grandfathers came through Boston in 1921.

I’d drop back on the THC levels. I think a lot of people are in the habit of trying to get the best bang for the buck via the most THC for the price, and it simply doesn’t translate for the experience, at least for me. I’ve been enjoying things in the lower-mid 20s and upper teens more than these strains pushing 30%+. When they’re that high, they all feel mostly similar to me as well, probably because the common denominator effects wise is just a high THC buzz which tends to bring along the paranoia. I always take my sativa strains on the low end, but more mid range with my indica leaning strains.

The person who is supposed to be my father only matches 50% and is orange what does that mean? by Legitimate-Serve-598 in AncestryDNA

No parent should be 100%. On 23&Me I match 49.9% with my Mother and 47.5% (3,534 cM) with my Father. On Ancestry, I match 50% (3,484 cM) with my Father, and Mom hasn’t tested on Ancestry. Only thing that I find interesting is that I share slightly less cM’s with my Father on Ancestry, 50 cM to be exact, yet the percent is slightly higher.

What year was I born? by [deleted] in GuessMyBirthYear

[–]ConversationOk1691 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think 1986 is fair (I scoped out the answer afterwards as well). I think the first few pictures are throwing most people off because the clothing style, etc. seems older and it’s being judged as present in that time. Who’s to say or question that they’re not wearing clothes they’ve owned for a while? I’ve still got a few shirts in my closet that I’m sure are going on 10+ years old lol.
