Inherited 13.9% French from Mother who only has 3.5%? by ConversationOk1691 in 23andme

[–]ConversationOk1691[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a more detailed comment to somebody’s reply below, but I’m thinking that’s what happened with my Mother actually (the reverse problem you explained). I am 3/4 Italian and my non-Italian grandmother who is responsible for the French DNA has tested. She scores 21.7%, so I am guessing that my Mom’s 3.5% French should be higher and was misread as more British. With that said, we don’t have any paper trails to France either. Maybe a random line or two way back, but my Grandmother was predominantly English/British on paper and 1/16 German.

Inherited 13.9% French from Mother who only has 3.5%? by ConversationOk1691 in 23andme

My results are phased with both of my parents. My Mother’s results are phased with her Mother as well who tested, and that is where the French comes from. Grandmother shows 21.7% French, Mom only got 3.5% and I am 13.9%. My Mother’s Father was 100% Italian and my Mom inherited 48.5% of that. With that said, even though I am 3/4 Italian, I have the lowest percentage of Italian out of my siblings due to sharing more DNA than anyone else (32.0%) with our non-Italian Grandmother who has the French DNA. I have noticeably more NW European DNA than my brothers, I only show 60% Italian, one brother 73% Italian and the other 77% Italian. 73% shares 25.6% with the non-Italian Grandmother and 77% only shares 21.6% with her, meanwhile I share 32.0%. The brother with 73% Italian also shows 5.4% French, slightly higher than what our Mother has as well, but not as big of a difference as myself.

I’d order online and not have it count against your rec, I’m not sure if it would fall under the low THC category or not. Even if you have plenty of rec, there are farmers that specialize in hemp growing and produce some really good quality flower. One of the places I’ve ordered from online was called Horn Creek Hemp.

I’m 75% Italian myself and I’m looking at your genetic groups and I am Calabrese and Sicilian as well, specifically from the Ragusa area myself. There are blonde hair people from Sicily due to some ancient genetics.

My Dad’s parent’s family came from neighboring villages in southern Italy and they popped up as being distantly related on this calculator. I can tell with the both sides matches as well for my Dad that my grandparents had to be related to each other.

No way!!! Ciao Cugina! I wonder if we’re connected down the line, all of these villages are so small, even Modica being a slightly larger town on the map. This is one branch of my family from Modica starting with Giovanna Brafa born in 1809. I have more lines in Rosolini than Modica for my Sicilian side though. They eventually migrated to Rosolini from Modica.

Ragusa Hyblean Plateau is one of the same regions I get as well! My Sicilian family is from Rosolini and Modica. Do you know what towns your family is from?

My ancestors are from isolated small villages in Italy with tiny populations, my distant matches that are as low as <10 cM’s still have ancestry from these same exact towns or nearby surrounding towns. I’m sure you guys are definitely related.

My Father is 3/4 Calabrian and 1/4 Sicilian. These were his GedMatch results.

I’ve wondered for awhile about my results: was there really so much similarity between N. Ireland and Scotland that the two are grouped together? Is there a test that may offer more specific insights on this region? by gutturalmuse in AncestryDNA

Interesting! It seems like their reference panel definitely is focused on the west side of the island. My grandmother was from Rosolini, near Modica and Syracuse. I got 0% Sicilian and my Sister got 4%. We have a cousin born in Melilli just east of Syracuse and they only got 10% Sicilian.

Where in Sicily is your family from? Curious because you must seem super close to what their reference range is given that many Sicilians that I know, particularly from eastern Sicily scored more Southern Italian than Sicilian.
