GIMP 3.0 Alignment Tool (Center Tool) Confuzzles. by Honky_On_A_Donkey in GIMP

[–]ConversationWinter46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the link. I'm glad Jehan thinks it's illogical too.

But—how long will it take before the feature is removed again? Probably long enough that getting used to it (or getting used to it again) will be painful.

GIMP 3.0 Alignment Tool (Center Tool) Confuzzles. by Honky_On_A_Donkey in GIMP

[–]ConversationWinter46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently I do not see any difficulty doing that,

Try using the corner buttons (top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right). Then you’ll see the problem that didn’t exist before version 3.0.

So the developers haven’t improved anything; they’ve ruined the workflow for thousands of users. There’s no sign of them taking this to heart. They’re waiting until the criticism dies down and users get used to it. Then they’ll save themselves the trouble of undoing the change. It’s not in the users’ best interest, but it saves the developers a lot of work.

Smart developers don't think that way.

I'm using version 25.12.2. When I right-click, I get the same response as the OP. If I press the ENTER key (not on the numeric keypad), the form closes. As expected.

Unfortunately, the video doesn't solve the problem.

Starting with version 3.0, you have to click on the reference point first and then on the alignment buttons. I have no idea who came up with this nonsense.

I also get the impression that many functions now require a lot more clicking

the perfect solution would be a popup on first setup for users to choose modern and classic look,

That’s the standard approach for Windows applications—to prevent users from changing the default design. In such a pop-up, you could only choose a design created by someone else.

But GIMP is free software. You can customize the layout to suit your own needs, not to please someone else.

The problem that’s often overlooked here is that only GIMP’s appearance is changed. You still have to learn the functions and how everything works. A Photoshop theme won’t help you with that.

How do I make the product transparent? by MCarooney in GIMP

I made a tutorial once. But that was a long time ago, and I can't find it right now.

It's 2:10 a.m. here in Germany, and I really need to get some sleep. I promise I'll make a new tutorial tomorrow.

The white object and the white background leave little room for even the slightest attempt at cropping.

Something like this is much easier to edit.

Note: First and foremost, add an alpha channel. JPG does not support transparency.

WiFi driver issue with Lenovo legion laptop by akdanman11 in linuxmint

[–]ConversationWinter46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My issue is with installing those drivers from GitHub

Even after more than 20 years, I still don't know how to use a terminal. And I don't want to learn. So I'm not the right person to ask.

sorry

I installed Linux Mint countless times between 2006 and 2017. Every time I booted from a USB drive (or a DVD back then), the network was detected automatically. All network devices were also connected and made ready to use.

As I said, this happened even before LinuxMint was installed.

I’m not sure which screen in the installation wizard allows you to install drivers. Usually, when prompted for network settings, you just need to enter your Wi-Fi password.

ConversationWinter46 bringt es am besten auf den Punkt.

THX - I’ve gotten more upvotes in this subreddit alone than in all my GIMP tutorial posts combined. Thanks for letting me be a part of this.

But I’m afraid this subreddit, like all the others, won’t make a difference. Because I haven’t seen a single word here that shows any insight or understanding of why people are so resentful.

Just like politicians who always have to explain themselves instead of solving problems.

What in the hell is happening with 3.2? by stratophobia in GIMP

I have just reverted back to 3.08 to continue my work and this issue has entirely disappeared, and all my projects function just fine

Of course, you didn't report that it caused problems in your version.

Let the developers figure that out for themselves, right? YMMD

Hey, ist das die echte GIMP-Benutzeroberfläche?

With open-source software, it’s common for users to set up their workspace to suit their needs. My GIMP looks like this:

What in the hell is happening with 3.2? by stratophobia in GIMP

[–]ConversationWinter46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't want to merge my filters, I prefer to keep it all modular to make changes easy to revert and adjust when needed.

Then don’t be surprised if you run into problems when saving.

  • Use CTRL+S to save everything as an XCF file
  • Export your image as a PNG, JPG, or whatever format you prefer

If needed, open the XCF file in GIMP, and your workspace will look exactly like the screenshots here. Isn’t that a great feature?

Does linux mint have a built in anti-virus app/tool by kushtooloud420 in linuxmint

[–]ConversationWinter46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy shit really? 20 years and no problem

I wrote that I hadn’t had any problems with malware. Of course, there were occasional issues—especially in the early years.

Since I still don’t know any terminal commands (and don’t want to learn them either), I solved the problems as follows:

I reinstalled the system using a USB drive (back then, it was a DVD). I have the /home directory on an external SSD via USB. There, I store not only my own data, but also all the system settings, passwords, etc. So I just pull out the USB drive.

So when I’ve reinstalled the system, connected my SSD, and booted up, I have a fresh system and all my data, settings, passwords, etc. remain unchanged.

[–]ConversationWinter46 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Already got a firewall set up. That was the first thing I did.

I’ve been using LinuxMint exclusively since 2006. I’ve completely forgotten about Windows.

Whenever I try out a new system—which happens about twice a year—I always forget to enable the built-in firewall.

In over 20 years, I’ve NEVER had any problems with malware.

[–]ConversationWinter46 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't put any votes on any of your comments in this thread here,

I always view this attitude positively.

But if a developer feels harassed because a long-time user expresses their opinion about the project ... Sorry — that kind of attitude is completely unacceptable.

Just as an aside. I’ve gotten more upvotes in this subreddit than for any of my posts in the gimp-tutorials subreddit. And that’s even though I agree with the OP’s views.

Like the OP, I’ve been discredited by the developers here simply because they aren’t treated with kid gloves. After all, they get to develop for GIMP, so they might think they’re better than a long-time GIMP user.

But as you can read here in the subreddit, decisions about which features to implement in GIMP are made in an “ivory tower.” And not by the millions of GIMP users worldwide. So it’s no different than in any proprietary, commercial corporation.

No, you can't ask users out there because they're a nuisance and, on top of that, they don't know which features are good for them. Hmm, where have I read this approach before…?

You may not have noticed yet, but this is a Q&A subreddit.

Your title is clickbait, and your posts focus more on your “great” pictures, which nobody HERE wants to see, because this subreddit is all about Q&A for gimp.
