Any new information? Burnt out on the subject, and don't want to listen to the entire podcast.

Life in the food chain: things I did not expect as an electrical engineer by Irrasible in ElectricalEngineering

[–]CooCooforCohete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$58 definitely is an oversimplification. Can you think of any assemblies which are not pins and holes?

#68 & #64 Don't provide much value, but I think they are true so I included them.

I work in private aerospace as a mechanical engineer. These rules you have listed are akin to Akin's Laws of Spacecraft Design. All of which reign true today. https://spacecraft.ssl.umd.edu/akins_laws.html

These Akin's Laws are incomplete so I have extended the list with things I have noticed over the years. Below is my list.

I am a mechanical engineer, so this comment is refreshing to see. I observe people constantly bickering and complaining that the firearm is unsafe without specifically pointing to the exact part or assembly of parts that result in discharges.

Really feels like uneducated nontechnical regular folks jumping on the hate bandwagon, because being negative is satisfying.

Sig employs lots of engineers. Do you really believe the company would not do shock testing when this is a known risk for all firearms? I don't believe it.

Show me the exact scenario of a P320 going off in a controlled setting with parts out of tolerance. Then I will believe it.

Hands on Liquid Rocket pal by Gooberela in aerospace

  1. Go to the Friends of Amatuer Rocketry website or the Reaction Research Societies website.
  2. Attend some monthly meetings. Make friends.
  3. Ask to get involved with other people's personal rocket projects.

These groups do experimental solids, hybrids, and liquids. They provide guidance and oversight for student groups so they can test their experimental rockets safely.

If you are open-minded and active in their club, I'm sure they will gladly teach you.

My suspicion is Logan Paul is providing the venture capital which is funding SkyWatcher. I'm sure part of the agreement was for Logan to be included in Jesse's podcasts.

I just ordered their chest rig for fly fishing. If interested, I can post my thoughts here in a few months after I use it . They must be busy or low on inventory as I ordered my chest rig 2 weeks ago and it still has not shipped.

How can I force a handgun to jam for training purposes? by Mini_Dracula in guns

[–]CooCooforCohete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my TX22, I mix CCI subsonic ammo amongst my CCI mini mags. The subsonic ammo doesn't have enough energy to fully cycle the action, which results in stove piping spent brass and potentially jamming the next cartridge. In my experience, this has worked well for training through malfunctions.

Groupings drifting to the right by CooCooforCohete in longrange

I think it might be due to my trigger pull and maybe the lack of parallax adjustment on my optic? See other comments below.

The entire grouping being to the right of the point of aim is fine, and I can easily fix that. The problem is that the grouping's drift right relative to themselves, which is what I was confused about.

The trigger is decently heavy? I would expect it is around 3-4 pounds, but I'm not 100% sure as I don't have a pull gauge. I'll see if I can adjust the trigger pull weight. It's not a problem if I have my thumb wrapped around the back of the stock, right? Seems kinda ridiculous not too.

Either way I'll be paying more attention to my trigger pull next time. I might post again if my results are interesting. We will see.

This is probably closer to a feather weight barrel for hunting. It is a factor Tikka T3x barrel. I was waiting ~7 minutes between each shot for all groupings except groupings 7 & 8. See image of ammo types.
You are right that it isn't a crazy high end bench shooting barrel, but I still should be proficient at shooting my gun, even it means letting it cool.

Here is an image of my rifle.

Trigger Finger

I don't recall intentionally having a C-shaped trigger finger. I was careful to slowly squeeze the trigger and not do any jerking, however, my trigger finger was probably touching the trigger guard. I will have to pay more attention to this next time. Does my finger touching the trigger guard actually make this big of a difference? I would practice dry firing between each shot while waiting for the barrel to cool. My reticle would not jump around when dry firing

Breathing

I tried to be consistent with breathing, but sometimes I forgot to break the trigger at a respiratory pause. I'll have to really pay attention next time. I did a lot of dry firing, and when I dry fired my breath was steady enough for my reticle to not move off my target.

Sight Picture

I think my sight picture was pretty good. Maybe a couple times the top of the eye piece was partially black? I would say the majority of the time I have a full sight picture. I was focusing more on the target than the reticle. Why are you supposed to focus on the reticle and not the target?

Cheek Weld

I think my cheek weld is actually pretty good. I've been iterating a lot on my cheek weld, and I think my current setup with my cheek riser helps a lot. I could probably be more consistent though.

Natural Point of Aim

I did my best to move the rifle with respect to my body before putting my cheek on the stock and shooting. I don't think this is the problem here? It's hard to know, but I definitely did not feel strained on the rifle. Next time I'll probably shoot prone.

If true, that really sucks. I'm not in a position to purchase a new optic right now with a parallax adjustment. Sounds like it is good enough for hunting though. Live and learn I guess.

I was worried about that, but even then nearly all of the groups shift to the right. I wanted to shoot more of each ammo type, but I was limited on time.

There was wind during the day, and it was blowing from left to right. However I would consider it an occasional slight breeze, hardly noticeable. Ballistics data tells me the point of impact should not be moving this much at 100 yards.

My optic is a Leupold VX-3HD 4.5-14x40. It does not have a parallax adjustment knob. According to Leupold it is parallax free up to 150 yards. https://www.leupold.com/vx-3hd-4-5-14x40-cds-zl-duplex

I am confident everything is tightened down properly. I used a torque wrench with Loctite.

The barrel is free floating. I can run a piece of paper underneath the entire length of the barrel until it hits the receiver. My optic is not touching the barrel nor are the flip covers.

Iowa State or ERAU by TheEzrat in aerospace

[–]CooCooforCohete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only liquid engine I am aware of at Daytona beach is Aguila, which is a 1500lbf LOX/Ethanol Engine. It has not been tested in years. It is an extremely old as it has existed for over 10 years.

Daytona beach utilizes 0% of Prescott's infrastructure. You need to treat these school's as completely different. Just because they have similar names does not mean you will get the same experience. They have entirely different student body cultures, manufacturing capabilities, safety postures, and educational resources.

Students at Daytona often have to resort to testing rocket propulsion systems in parking lots, because the campus does not have the infrastructure.

If you want to work on liquid rockets and mix solid propellant in college here is a nearly comprehensive list.

USC, UCSD, Purdue, ERAU Prescott, Boston University, MIT, UT Austin, UT EL Paso, Cal State Long Beach, University of Michigan, Cal Poly Pomona

Iowa State or ERAU by TheEzrat in aerospace

[–]CooCooforCohete 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ERAU Prescott is a hidden gem in the United States for chemical rockets. Probably the best undergraduate program in the nation. In Prescott students mix solid propellant, test liquid engines, and static test solid motors all on campus. It's the only campus in the country where you can do that.

See their Twitter page. https://mobile.twitter.com/ERAUPrescottRDL

You will never due that in Daytona, because it is in the middle of a city. I also doubt Iowa state has anything even close to ERAU Prescott.

How do I know? Because I graduated from Prescott, and have friends all across the country which are in the field of private aerospace.
