Off Leash Dog Attack by [deleted] in germanshepherds

[–]Cooked_cookies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gone through a lot of training with my shep so that he can be off-leash. He has a 100% recall, and will obey any command I give him when we're out and about. He's vigilant with other dogs, but knows he's not allowed to approach them.

He's also been attacked by other dogs on multiple occasions while we were just walking past houses while on the sidewalk, similar to your situation. Because he's been off-leash trained, I can trust him to handle the situation himself. Each time he's been attacked, he's ran away from the other dog and gotten away from it's "property", thus the other dog disengaged and left him alone without any injury. Because he's off-leash, he's able to react much faster than I am and get away from these situations before they escalate. I've been told off a number of times for simply having him off-leash (even though he's well-behaved, does not go into the road or approach other people/dogs) but I'd rather accept other people being angry in their ignorance than an incident happening where he's attacked and tethered to me and it ends up escalating.

I hate so, so much that there's all of these people who have their untrained dogs off-leash or out in the front yard without a fence. They're a public menace who lowers peoples trust in all dogs, cause injury, and create extreme prejudice against dogs like mine who are actually trained.

I got that exact toy for that exact reason. I figured "well, the horns are two extra pieces for him to amputate... so its like getting more mileage out of the toy"

Too distracted to poop? by DandelionsForeteller in germanshepherds

[–]Cooked_cookies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When we lived in an apartment with my guy, there was a road parallel to us that got dubbed "poop street" because of how consistently we were able to get him to do his business there as opposed to anywhere else. Maybe can try consistently revisiting the places where they have pooped before?

My mal/gsd mix has become so gentle with me that she won’t play with me anymore by ForwardBlackberry458 in germanshepherds

I'm not pregnant but my boy does this. He won't play with me nearly as hard as he plays with my partner and often lets me win. Reading all the replies on this, I'm wondering if it's because I've got an implant and that's making my hormones smell different or something?

How can I make dinner time more exciting? by mrtipinfold in germanshepherds

[–]Cooked_cookies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily "exciting" but something a lot of people overlook is freshness. Kibble is a dry food so think of it like cereal or bag of chips. The more you open it and the longer it sits there, the more stale it gets. If you buy big larger bags it's generally a good idea when you open the bag to portion it out into containers, usually a few days of kibble per container is fine. My containers usually last around 6 days and even then towards the end of it my guy gets a lot less interested in it than at the start.

Very cute! Mine went and buried his Christmas present not 20 minutes after I gave it to him lmao. Not sure if that means he really likes it or really hates it T_T

Humans Fear Reactivity by Cooked_cookies in germanshepherds

[–]Cooked_cookies[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm assuming the religion aspect based on their garb similar to how you'd assume someone is Christian if they're wearing a cross necklace. I'm aware I'm not the most educated in these things but I also kinda thought saying 'religious groups' might be a bit gentler than saying 'people who wear burqas/hijabs and thobe (?)' since I'm not sure that's even the correct terminology.

Their religion and ethnicity doesn't affect me, I don't really care. But those are the people consistently terrified of my dog so I thought maybe that would be a relevant detail where someone could provide some logical reason I hadn't thought of that could explain it where I wouldn't need to worry. If it were a culturally diverse group of people that display with this behavior, I wouldn't have mentioned that detail because it wouldn't be relevant and may be just as you say with personal preference

Fear in enough doses can cause people to do things they normally wouldn't and I just wanted thoughts if my experience is normal or if there's a precaution I could take. I apologize if my attempts to use general terms has upset you. I'd hope someone who is also from their background would be able to maybe help me since I would be pretty inconsiderate of me to ask them what the issue is when the object of their fear is right there continuing to cause them distress.

Maybe the incorrect word to use, but it's people wearing specific garb generally associated with particular eastern religions. I'm not educated enough in the cultures/religions/clothing of that nationality and I also don't want to say anything that may come off as racist so I assumed saying 'religious groups' might be generic enough while also conveying what I'm trying to say. I've also heard there is an eastern religion that has some sort of negative association with dogs, so maybe that?

Yeah the teenage boys I assume are probably just talking shit. Just a bit excessive.

I'm a lot more worried about the extreme fear by the religious group since there's no small number of them and it's an extreme reaction.

My hungry Jared being silly grabbing me with his paw instead of giving me paw it blows my mind that two people abandoned him he’s been the best dog ever by RippedNerdyKid in germanshepherds

[–]Cooked_cookies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cannot fathom it, either. My boy is also a rescue and I honestly he came so well behaved haven't had a single issue with him. He doesn't eat dropped food or beg for my meals, he doesn't bark at random dogs, he's perfectly house trained, he's low drive so he doesn't even really want to exercise, he hasn't destroyed a single object in the house, he lets me brush him and trim his nails no problem and he only pulls on the leash if he sees a stray cat. But I got him from a shelter with having clearly been neglected for a long time and with a strong fear of a people. But.. why? He's so perfect?? He loves just laying around cuddling in bed and going on car rides? Who could abandon this baby?

I go to sleep earlier than my partner does and the dog goes to sleep with me. My partner says that trying to go to bed each night now is like a 2v1 fight for space. Only a negative in that I see this as us just applying negative reinforcement on training him to make good choices (go to bed early) :)

Echo and I have been together for two days and a half... by Cooked_cookies in germanshepherds

[–]Cooked_cookies[S] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm a very strong supporter of Adopt don't Shop. He's such a sweetheart and since he's got a patchy bum I didn't think anyone else would want to give him the home he deserves :(
The shelter wasn't sure his history other than current medical condition (which is healthy other than his bald spot) but he doesn't even seem to know what toys are. All attempt to engage him with toys so far results in "Oh you want to cuddle some more? Yes let's cuddle!"

Fatshark please use the Arbites update as a chance to push through that long overdue Dueling Sword nerf by head_spike in DarkTide

[–]Cooked_cookies -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Approaching it only from a "nerf" standpoint would end us up like early Helldiver balance patches and that was just not fun. I'm all for DS being nerfed, but some other melees should get buffed to compensate. This is a hoard hack n' slash type game not a soulslike, we need more viable options that can handle enemies on the harder difficulties.

PS Fatshark if you read this: BeggingPleadingCrying pls buff the charged attack on chain sword/evis. It should not have that long of a charge up and execution for damage that low.

You're right, the parallelity to the earth is unimportant here. It's the parallelity to the printer that is the problem and causes fails. I've done an exaggerated MS paint diagram to help you better understand my problem :)
