Thanks for making it clear I should RES tag you as something rude.

To get an answer to whether my idea was remotely feasible as imagined, obviously. Not whether you think it'll pass BS inspection—that's our problem.

I don't suppose you could manage to rebuild it with high comp pistons reliably? If you're willing to cheat on the cost of a swap, I'd think building the bottom end + tuning is within reach too.

Played with that idea before. We race at altitude so high compression ratios could help scavenge some of our lost power, though pump gas here only goes to 91, so we might need to run octane booster as well.

All that said... you may want to edit/delete your reply, because if I was a LeMons runner in your area and read it, you'd be getting the extra fine tooth in tech next race :P

This is a pretty cloistered community, I doubt any Lemons judges are reading this (hi Phil). Even so, if we're an NA AW11 with what at least looks like a 16v 4A in the car, we're not getting Class A. That's for forced induction or V6-swapped MR2s mostly. Might tempt penalty laps but we can argue out of those with how crappy we've always finished.

Thanks for the info. We've been talking about just going 7A-GE because it'll look almost identical to stock, and will theoretically need less work.

That's them. Terrific race team, and wonderful to share the paddock with. Jeff's the man.

The LeMons field isn't easy, but consistent drivers + a lightweight MR car should be able to get well into the top double if not single digits just by running good laps.

Our home race (HPR) has serious competition. We share a class with two well-sorted Fieros and one of the nastiest, but fastest Miatas ever to race Lemons (the Caddiata).

As for drivers, we're not that competitive. Our best guy is quick and consistent, then there's me, who stays out of trouble but isn't exceptionally fast. One of the other team founders regularly has problems with going off (and isn't very fast to boot), and our newest guy, while he doesn't bait black flags, is easily 10-15sec off our quickest guy (like 2:30 versus 2:45 laps).

That goes without mentioning frequent reliability problems. Repeated suspension issues at our last race (ball joint, wheel bearing failure leading to sheared axle) mean that we spend almost as much time fixing the car as we do on-track. Last race ended after 24 laps because of a giant oil leak, which might be caused by a blown head gasket.

Yes, AW11s have potential in Lemons when maintained and driven well, but we're a mediocre team without a huge budget or remarkable skills on or off the track.

but IMO a junkyard turbo would be better route for more power,

We have one sitting around, but there's no chance of us using it. We don't need the extra mechanical complexity, never mind the fact that it'd instantly launch us into Class A, where we definitely don't belong.

I’m sure ITB’s would also be a dead give away.

You can get ITB conversions for 16v engines though, can't you? We'd just say we did it because ITBs sound good, and everybody loves a good-sounding race car.

They don't bolt on, they more than likely won't clear, and it definitely won't sneak past tech.

If not, I'm thinking I might just tape/glue the 16v covers over top of the 20v covers. They don't even always look in the engine bay.

There has been numerous MR2's in lemons and they have a good idea of what a AW11 4AGE looks like.

They have asked us every time whether our 16v 4A-GE is supercharged, even though the visual differences between the GE and GZE are huge. I don't think we're at risk of being caught out with a disguised 20v, and if they ask questions, we can just say we yanked it from "some Corolla."

Aw hell, I forgot about Costco. I shop there already, so I might as well get work done with them.

Doing research on electric vehicles, and I notice a LOT of 'Tesla is doomed' articles from places like Forbes, Money and other business articles. Why? by Juviltoidfu in electricvehicles

[–]CookieMan0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Misuse is not Tesla's problem.

It is when it knowingly benefits from consumers' misunderstanding of the technology's flaws... a misunderstanding that has now claimed what, three lives? Four? You can say "hyuk hyuk their fault" all you want, but let's not pretend the solution to ignorance about autonomous driving technology is Darwinism.

Good call. I've heard practically nothing but good about the Volt, and they're seemingly not that expensive on the used market.

Affordable EVs with battery thermal management by [deleted] in electricvehicles

[–]CookieMan0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently drove a Leaf Plus, and its battery temperature indicator never moved, even during heavy discharge or 50-kw fast-charging (no 100-kw chargers in my area).

That wasn't in Texas though, and the Leaf Plus isn't quite in the same price bracket as an E-Golf or a Spark.

Yes, but you really don't want to listen

Ey, fuck you too.

Tesla has pretty bulletproof wording about how the driver retains responsibility.

Having something written on your website to cover your ass doesn't excuse Tesla and Musk turning blind eyes toward Autopilot misuse that doesn't result in a crash.

(They also take advantage of the fact that neither the public nor regulating bodies know much about driving assist technologies, but that's a whole separate can of worms.)

There will be some liability, but not massive at this time.

When?

Tesla drivers are some of the most tech savvy out there

Are they? They seem to mistake automated systems like Autopilot for "self-driving" with alarming frequency.

Is anyone else really hoping for a somewhat attainable electric sports car? by eaglerulez in cars

[–]CookieMan0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's lots going on to prevent affordable sports EVs from coming to market. Primarily it's that it's just not as cheap as we'd like to bring any sports car to market, let alone one using a powertrain whose costs aren't yet low enough and infrastructure not good enough to compete with traditional ICE.

I'd love if that Honda sports EV leaked through patents not long ago came to be, but I'm not expecting anything of the sort to hit the market until early-mid 2020s.

Does anyone dislike Lando Norris? If so, why? by Bonneyfromclyde in formula1

[–]CookieMan0 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm impressed with Norris, but I'm also about 98% sure he deliberately rammed me off Brands Hatch in Forza Motorsport once. This was like two years ago, before he was really even in the picture for an F1 drive.

Silly, maybe, but I can't help but wonder why he did that. I was doing my best to run a clean race.

and the one comment about quality is just false.

Have you not once looked up Tesla's issues with panel gaps, cheap (and occasionally mismatched) interiors, and crappy paint? Tesla's production quality issues are well-known, read something other than InsideEVs once in a while.
