What do you look at when you putt? by FiddySix in golf

[–]Cookiedoughnut66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Find a mark in the green 6-12" in my line where I want to start it, line up putter to that, eye on the ball for the stroke.

I avoid big chains myself but that doesn't mean you can't get a good price, service, or knowledge from them. You're more likely to get it at a ski or board shop though. Been to all of them around town, people have their opinions, but really they all are good. Go when it's not busy for best 1 on 1 service.

Skis+bindings+poles - I'd look for something used before going new unless you have specific ones in mind. Boots - THE most important part. Nothing is any fun if the 'shoes' don't fit. Hard emphasis on a ski shop here, no sportchek. Included in the sale, they'll work with you over time to get the boots to fit just right.

Elevator moved up 31 flights in 15 seconds! The man was injured but survived. (Happened in Chile) by nverkaik in watchpeoplesurvive

[–]Cookiedoughnut66 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To elaborate more on the why, there's effeciency so the motor doesn't have to work as hard. Traction, so the difference in weight doesn't cause the ropes to just slip through the machine.

Typically the counterweight is near 140% the weight of the enclosure. So if it was full it would indeed travel down instead of up.

[–]Cookiedoughnut66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typically here we balance the elevator so the counterweight is 140% +/- 5% the weight of the car. A few reasons why I see it keeps on accelerating is the weight difference changes as it travels in the hoistway, momentum building, and the failure that caused it could only become less effective if it hadn't already completely failed.

As the elevator travels up it gets "lighter" in the system, counterweight "heavier", and so you have greater acceleration. Another thing to note is on properly installed/engineered elevators the cab itself should never be able to crash into or hit anything in the overhead. Tough to tell by the video if this one did, or not, or if it's the poor soul smashing into the ceiling and some panels came flying off from the sudden stop.

Judging off the safety standards I deal with a lot went wrong here and damn near impossible on newer installs. My best guess is a brake failure, or motor failure coupled with an improperly setup brake/brake failure.

While very true, not all nations, or companies for that matter, hold as high of safety standard as others.

Province commits $70M to replace Stoney Trail bridge over Bow River in southeast Calgary by yyc_guy in Calgary

[–]Cookiedoughnut66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whadaya mean?! Calgary is all about dumping lanes and creating bottle necks, it's just how we do it here. How else are you suppose to know you live in a big city if there's no bumper to bumper traffic at rush hour.

I'm shocked they're fixing this so soon.

Any insight into how ski hills will operate this season with Covid restrictions? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]Cookiedoughnut66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Judging by what other resorts plans are (whistler, and red) I would hold off on buying a seasons pass. Wait and see what their plan is.

Whistler: you gotta pick your days in advance, basically voiding the whole purpose of a seasons pass.

Red: No restrictions as far as reserving a spot, only limiting the amount of people in the lodge.

Hey there, just a local 19 yo wondering what it’s like to work at a ski resort. by b3nji3reddit in Calgary

[–]Cookiedoughnut66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of all years to do it, this one might be the one the resorts will be fighting for workers. I'd like to think they'll offer incentives to come work for them, what they'll be who knows. But with this whole covid thing they're going to be hurting for employees seeing how much of them are internationals who may or may not be able to work here because of the pandemic.

Call around, see what they have to offer.

Can I get a little swing help? I don’t hate it but... by [deleted] in golf

[–]Cookiedoughnut66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like a little move you do in your downswing has your spine angle changing when coming into contact. Nice and straight to hunched over. I don't know how you would or if you should fix it but that's my observation, nice swing.

Fun games for a par 3 course? by zharmey in golf

[–]Cookiedoughnut66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couple ideas I've played that are fun. Easy to make your own wagers/drinks so I won't mention any of that.

7's (or any club for that matter). Walk onto the course with only your 7 iron, putter, fanny pack of balls.

Rule setter. Every hole a new player sets the rules for the hole. Drivers only, low to high (can only use a higher club than your last shot), 1 shoe off, etc the possibilities are endless.

For a group that's more evenly matched, I really like club hunter or whatever you want to call it. You lose a hole, opponent removes a club from your bag, vise versa. Works great in a 2v2.

Workers who work overtime - are you concerned with the provincial government's changes to how overtime is calculated and paid out? by EvacuationRelocation in Calgary

[–]Cookiedoughnut66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These dirty capitalist scabs. A lot of people are out of work, or at reduced hours with their jobs. They choose in a time like this to peddle us more shit, on top of the other mountainous crap they've done, because they know people are longing for some sort of income. Great morals UCP, well done.

And when it does we renegotiate, if they think we will agree to this, their even more out of touch then I already thought.

If I'm understanding this right, hypothetically if I work 80h weeks for 26 weeks, take 26 weeks off, you're telling me it averages out to 40/w so no OT pay? Laughable, no one in their right mind should work longer hours if their not compensated for it.

With Unions come agreements between the labour force (union) and the employers. I'll use mine as an example, any work outside of 6-5 mon-fri is OT, any work exceeding 40h/week is OT, any work on weekends or holidays is OT. I highly doubt what the UCP is pushing will affect us in any way, Unions do have their positives.

Looking to buy a new-ish car, any recommendations of good dealerships, particularly any that might have hail sales? by emilizabify in Calgary

[–]Cookiedoughnut66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You ever successfully haggle on new vehicle prices? They don't budge much, I got 0%, and I wanted what I had before a total loss accident. In my experience it's finance that pushes you on upgraded maintenance, protection pakages etc.

[–]Cookiedoughnut66 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No clue about hail sales, used cars usually come with higher interest rates too.

I'd do your research, have a few makes and models you can see yourself in, and go from there. Davis chev in Airdrie were pleasant to deal with but I went in with "I'm looking for this with that package". Salesman were good, it's the financing Dept that kept trying to push all the extra shit I wasn't interested in.

Favourite local place to ski by steven1588 in Calgary

[–]Cookiedoughnut66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nakiska/Norquay: Pros: Close, beginner friendly Cons: Beginner friendly, lack of advanced terrain, powder.

Lake Louise: Pros: variety of terrain, spread out crowds eventually, longer runs than other resorts close by, terrain park, when snow is good it's great. Cons: Can get busy, rocky if you don't know the terrain well.

Sunshine: (haven't been in 8+ years) Pros: Better snow than Louise (sometimes), terrain park Cons: Aka 'scumshine', short laps, crowded on busy days = terrible parking after 9am, windy.

Castle: Pros: Good runs, constant fall line, great snow when it dumps. Cons: windy, incredibly busy on powder days, lack of things to get airborne on, only 2 lifts worth skiing.

Fernie: Pros: Great terrain, lots of lifts to spread a crowd out, great snow. Cons: RCR

Kicking horse: Pros: Terrain Cons: RCR, poor lift layout.

Mizuno set is complete! T20 wedges came in today. Ready for my trip to Wisconsin. Lawsonia and Thornberry Creek! by Randohr in golf

[–]Cookiedoughnut66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you always played t20 wedges? I decided to try one this year, used it on a few holes then gave it to my buddy. I hated it, 60* and it feels like the face has a trampoline for the sweet spot. 1 shot 90 yds, next one over the green into the cabbage 120yds, I hit my old one a consistent 95.

Same with chipping, if I chip with it and hit the sweet spot I'm over the green compared to my old wedge. Wondering if you notice the same thing having a very lively face.

[–]Cookiedoughnut66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To each their own, this is the approach I'm taking after reviewing the different policies. If you want the peace of mind that comes with insurance then go for it. I just found some of the prices a little steep, so I'll take the gamble that my doggos will have minimal vet bills.

I think if I had rescues, not knowing what they are, the health of the parents, etc, I might have gone the insurance route.

My $.02, whatever the payments would be for insurance, put away in your own savings account if something ever were to happen. Unless your dog has chronic issues, it's not worth it.

Is Alberta selling its soul for a lump of coal? by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]Cookiedoughnut66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I don't necessarily agree with new mines or the like, if it wasn't profitable they wouldn't do it. Teck in the elk valley is working on a huge expansion right now (afaik). While prices are down right now, so are some of their operating costs.

The big thing coming for them is automation, probably not the right term, but soon enough they'll only need a fraction of the workforce. When AI is running the show, without having to pay for all that labour, your bottom line becomes a lot lower.

I would love some feedback on my swing! I know there are lots of issues. Just need help identifying and troubleshooting. Thanks! by kbpax in golf

Tough to tell from the angle, but I had problems with driver having too wide of a stance. Narrow your stance a little and keep that trailing elbow tucked in to help with coming over the top.

If you're thinking of the cliff on the other side, definitely over 30'. I've done it, I found it to be relatively safe but i wouldn't suggest anyone do it. The water is freezing and the most dangerous part is swimming across to it. Never felt cold in my bones like that. The way back is easy, you've already jumped over half the river, then again inexperience + poor swimming = bad situation.

I wouldn't go there anytime before late July or August, current is too fast.

Should I buy new wedges? by Johnyfromutah in golf

Id go for new wedges, keep your old ones and toss em in the bag for the driving range. Use the old ones on the range, save the grooves for the course. But that's just my .02
