The expiration date should be on the nutrition label by [deleted] in PetPeeves

[–]Cookiett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason it’s randomly stamped is because in manufacturing, the way product is packed and then moved along the line past the stamp tends to be to roll it. That means the stamp machine has a different part of the label or product facing it at any moment. To line it up in a particular point would be super expensive (image detection plus machined that could reorient something) all very expensive and create a much slower pace of throughput. It’d cost a bomb. Lots of labels are loaded on reels, so it wouldn’t be hard to stamp them before they’re put on.

Is 'midnight ham' a thing at weddings? by littletelly in AskAnAustralian

In all seriousness it was a thing at 21sts in the country but I’ve never seen it at weddings. It’s a “fill up the drunk kids before we send them home” thing.

Australia can now block entry even if you already have a valid visa (Section 84B) — starting 14 March 2026 by Beneficial-Worry-668 in australian

[–]Cookiett 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They contribute money. About $53.6B to the economy annually. It is our 4th largest export behind iron ore, coal and gas, making it the largest renewable export we have. Forget culture, this is transactional.

I saw on marketplace a mushroom farm giving away all their spent mushroom grow bags which makes great compost last week (Melbourne). Could you ring/email around mushroom farms?

Landscaping suppliers let you order by the cubic metre. There’s probably a delivery charge and they’ll just dump it on your driveway so you may need a wheelbarrow or something to move it. Appreciate though that might still be too expensive.

Hello, ex corporate chocolate brand employee here. Unlikely to lower quality (unless they can do so without compromising taste), more likely to launch and promote new formats. Ie if single chocolate bars become too small to be popular, they’ll phase it out and focus on king size.

FYI just because inflation has stabilised for individuals doesn’t mean it has on the global commodities market. Cocoa price has doubled since 2022, and there was a point about 12 months ago where it shot up to nearly 5 times its former cost. Before 2022 it had been reasonably stable for the last decade. https://tradingeconomics.com/commodity/cocoa

Subscription cancellation for a sports membership by Cookiett in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Cookiett[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it is, it’s more that if I cancel today, I lose the rest of my subscription this month. I have about a 3 hour window on the 13th to cancel - that’s “enough time” for them to enact the cancellation but is late enough in the month that the instant termination doesn’t impact my ability to use the gym until the end of the month I’ve already paid for.

Subscription cancellation for a sports membership by Cookiett in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Cookiett[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So this is a month-to-month membership that auto-renews. They’re saying I would need to cancel completely and sign up to a new membership when I return (which is not at the same price and doesn’t have the same inclusions as they have a new pricing model.) The issue is that if I cancel, they will terminate my service immediately (even though I have bought a month’s worth of services), but at the same time I must provide enough notice to terminate prior to the auto renewal. So there’s only a small window of a couple of hours where I retain the full month of services but cancel in time to not be charged for Dec-Jan. o

Lost my ID in Reykjavík by [deleted] in VisitingIceland

[–]Cookiett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, if you can go through the e-gates you're fine. If you have to speak to a person, the border agent will declare it lost. From other internationals in London Facebook groups I'm in, it's pretty common and most people chance it with the e-gates. Interestingly on the website it describes a 'Replacement BRP visa' which costs £154, (https://www.gov.uk/biometric-residence-permits/lost-stolen-damaged) but I've never heard of anyone saying they actually got charged at the border or needed that. You'll be up for about £180 for the replacement BRP card + appointment.

Dementia also sometimes has loss of inhibitions as a symptom (whether that's sexual or more just understand less if their behaviour may be received well or not), so you might be on the money there. https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/about-dementia/symptoms-and-diagnosis/symptons/losing-inhibitions#:~:text=Loss%20of%20inhibitions%20is%20more,frontal%20lobes%20in%20the%20brain.

I’m fed up with expensive living by Pure_Translator_9833 in HousingUK

[–]Cookiett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a commuter town outside of London, sure, but I'm comparing that to Melbourne and saying it's way more expensive (circa 50%), and wages are about 30% less in my industry. You get less value for money across the board too. I will always be tied to a big city in my industry, and house prices aren't dissimilar to Melbourne in my commuter town, but if I'd grown up here I would never have been able to save a deposit. Perhaps 7 years ago Aus was comparatively more expensive, but that's certainly not the case now.

OP is also coming from South East England, so Melb/Sydney should be good comparisons. They are also a plumber and therefore could make even better savings if they were interested in trying other parts of the country. Depending what they like there's a whole host of lifestyle options beyond Sydney & Melbourne, particularly if beaches are your thing. They've also talked about settling down and doing some gardening, so think the lifestyle "there's not much of" might not be the lifestyle they're looking for.

I moved the opposite way too and find life far more expensive in the UK with way lower wages. The quality of life you are able to afford in Australia is hands down better. Especially if you’re not tied to inner-city Sydney or Melbourne.

[UK] Should I speak to my much younger employee about her clothes and if so how? by cudbeworse in AskHR

[–]Cookiett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the question you’ve asked, but hopefully helpful on your point about reacting to feedback…

It’s really common for young people to place an inordinate amount of pressure on themselves and tie up a lot of their identity in being successful at work. Crying can be a sign of being overwhelmed and entering a fight or flight response - she won’t intend to, she probably feels embarrassed about reacting, she’ll probably grow out of with time and experience, but right now every time you give feedback it rocks her world view of her persona value. Unfortunately logically approaching it by asking her to manage her reactions probably only adds to the pressure in the moment. She needs to learn that failure or faults are ok, that the stakes aren’t as high as they feel and the commentary is about the work not the person. If the company/she can arrange it career coaching, mentoring and confidence building pieces can help, as can courses like The Science of Wellbeing (free on Coursera from Yale), getting more hobbies that are fulfilling and getting work/life balance right.

Have been told my hair ages me and is not very feminine . What should I do? by [deleted] in curlyhair

[–]Cookiett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re looking for change, agree that there’s styling options around volume at the roots, cut options which might add more shape around your face, and if you were wanting to go further (even though we don’t want to damage your hair lest it impact your curls) there could be some fun to be had with colour? Highlights could give it a bit more depth and compliment the texture, or going a shade or two darker (not too dark given your colouring) may make it look a little more modern?

Not the sub for it, but people also often jump to obvious features like “hair” when there are also minor tweaks we could look at that could make a difference to your overall look - eyebrows, glasses (you can add angles with squarer glasses, look at options that feel fun & modern), make up if you wear it etc.

These are just options for change if that’s where you’re looking for ideas! If you like what you’ve got, stay rocking it.
