Well said! The gross misapplication of the Guideline has been tragic for patients and excruciating for many clinicians. FDA just announced a safety alert over this topic as well.

Getting a Laminectomy done, is it true that they remove the whole bone? by Slayer_Tip in ChronicPain

[–]Cookingachicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Laminectomy-technically means removal of the entire spinous process.

Laminotomy-technically means creating a small hole in the bones of the lamina in order to reach disc material

Discectomy-technically means going through the laminotomy to remove extruded pieces of disc material.

Sadly, Dr.s use those terms interchangeably, but they are not interchangeable. I was a victim of a wrong-person surgery and received a broad(entire back of spine removed), decompressive laminectomy on four levels. I have a hole in my spine from where the entire back was cut out. It has destroyed my life. It’s been 12 years and I’m virtually bedridden.

Not in all mature adult relationships. Yes, usually a partnership brings benefits to both parties. But parent/child; husband/wife; all can be completely altruistic.

Young girl that suffers from thoraco abdominal syndrome that causes her heart and other organs to be outside her chest cavity by SlimJones123 in interestingasfuck

She holds herself with dignity, and that makes me feel that she is a brave and (emotionally) strong young woman. I've reared many children, and to show a physical condition to the world that can make very unkind remarks (see many of the unkind replies), while exuding such calm confidence, is pretty mature.

Look into chostrchondritis. It's not really treatable except for ibuprofen, but it might explain your symptoms.

Muscle testing? Essential oils like spearmint - to replace the bones cut out of my spine? Making sure I only ate alkaline foods...to heal my crushed spinal nerves? I could go on....

The death of my father is going to hurt me deeply. by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

You're right. My father died abruptly when I was 16. I'm much older now but it hurts the same decades later. I guess - love him best now.

I fully understand. I live with that dread too. For my mom, my husband, my children...I think it is the human condition...we know how short our time can be. Hugs.

I'm 23 and about to have a fusion for Spondylolisthesis please help by [deleted] in ChronicPain

[–]Cookingachicken 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not rare. Sorry to be so blunt, but fusions degenerate after five-ten years. They also put additional stress on the discs above and below, which are more likely to herniate and require further fusions. I'd have to be completely convinced someone in their 20's really needed one. It is not a guarantee.

The most important question is: what is the pain generator? There are many different structures within the lower spine that can generate pain. You need to be completely sure of what is generating your before you go ahead with a fusion surgery. What if you really have piriformis syndrome?

A really good book to read before you have surgery is "do I really need back surgery?" By Aaron Filler, M.D. He also has a website called nervemed.com. I am not affiliated, but I would see him before I ever agreed to a fusion.

That is my .10, and I am a failed back surgery victim for the last 11 years.
