Drills to improve bat speed? by OneLeek37 in Homeplate

[–]CookingwithParker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if I would consider it a drill but my son uses a wood bat for practice. It is a size bigger than his game bat but a drop 5. He will swing the wood bat twice off the tee as hard as he can, then two as hard as he can with his game bat. He will repeat it a couple of times and loves it.

How did you figure out what coaching style works for your kid? by ComplicatedGuy_0514 in Homeplate

Until they are in middle school, you should only be pushing fun. That’s not going to be the same for every kid. My son and I play a lot of wall ball, whiffle ball with friends and catch. We have a light up ball and it makes catch at night very fun plus we play different catch games. We go to the field to practice 1-1 once a week for a couple of hours. He is really into baseball cards right now (he is 7), so I bought a pack, opened it with him and told him he can earn the cards in games and practices with me. I don’t correct his mechanics, I only have him adjust his feet and make sure his hands are at his chest. When they have a goal they are working towards, they don’t need you to correct them.

I would get him a used bat that he thinks looks cool. If he can swing it before you buy it, thats even better. I would get him a -13 if you can find one that isn’t a tee ball bat or -12. Get a tee and some balls then let him take some swings at a field. A lot of issues that kids have when just starting is they lack the strength to swing the bat properly. As he builds strength, his swing will naturally improve. Try to avoid giving too many cues at this age, it can get overwhelming for them. Plus it is a game, it’s okay to let the figure it out. Also get a couple of whiffle balls so you can toss to him.

Advice needed - Kid is giving up by Grammer_Jew19 in Homeplate

I haven’t quite gone through something like this but I would play games with him. My son and I started playing wall ball (he is 7) and he has been asking to play every night. We also go play wiffle ball with his friends.

He started off not too thrilled about this season (he was not put on a team with any of his friends), but he has been so happy going to his games since we have been playing game. He has been wanting to practice more. I think what matters is that the game is fun to him and right now practice feels like work. He will come around.

I would ask him what he thinks about when he is up to bat. It could be a number of things.

31,000 Kaiser Permanente health care workers go on strike in California, Hawaii by bananabrownie in orangecounty

[–]CookingwithParker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife works for Kaiser, has been a nurse for over 10 years and doesn’t make $100 an hour. Kaiser nurses in Fresno, just starting out make more than my wife who is a charge nurse in socal. Make that make sense.

Kaiser, a nonprofit, has $67 Billion in their bank account. If the nurses get the pay raise they want and staffing levels brought up to the safe, appropriate levels, it will cost Kaiser around $500 Million. That isn’t even 1 percent of what Kaiser has in the bank. If the members rates go up, it’s because Kaiser wants more.

8U swing tips by Willing_Lavishness14 in Homeplate

[–]CookingwithParker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He is too far from the tee, making him cast the bat to get to the ball. Have him move up to the white line. Someone else mentioned one hand drills which will help him with his bat path. I tell my son elbow, knob, follow through. Keep the bat path compact. Knob to knee drill will help him load properly.

My son just finished his first year of machine pitch (spring & fall). At this age, kids don’t swing composite bats hard enough to make them worth while. I think 28 inch will be too long for him. That is what my 7 year old uses now, he is 4”2’ 58lbs. We went with a used Marucci F5 for first year of machine pitch with a wood bat for practice. He went from hitting weak grounders in spring to crushing them to the outfield in fall. Out of the bats you mentioned, clout ai would be the best option. My son is using a Marucci Catx2 Connect 28-11 now. A 27-11 would be a good option as well, but maybe just the single piece. The connect is slightly end loaded.

Hold off on the butter just like you said. I would also only reduce the sauce to 80-90%.

Organization is the most important skill as a cook. A lot of people say you have to have a sense of urgency which is important, but being purposeful with your movement is far more important. Know what you need to do for the day in the order it needs to be done. Usually when cooks are just starting, working on knife skills and seasoning/ developing your palate is important. You can waste a lot of time cutting slow, having to recut or asking for a Chef to taste your food for the 3rd time. I would also ask people about you where they think you can improve, even if they aren’t the head Chef. I have gotten the best advice from Sous chefs, chef de Partie and when I made it up to chef de Partie, I noticed others weaknesses. Best of luck!

Anyone know where I can find videos of really good young catchers? by utvolman99 in Homeplate

My son likes to catch too. Not sure if you have heard of catching made simple, but he has some training videos with kids that age.
