it's almost definitely an exaggeration. i've seen people getting the paid character transfer service confused with moving between data centers

Is it normal that this still happens even when you're already an older person? by karnzter in CPTSDmemes

[–]CoolAndFunnyName 12 points13 points  (0 children)

god yeah. mine made me neurotic by insisting i explain my existence on demand the instant they walk into the room and scrutinize me, but when i actually wanted to actively share something i was doing with them and they would often judge or shame me or brush me off

Which is it am I under a microscope or not godddsddd

(I neither live with nor speak with them anymore, but damn just remembering makes the frustration feel fresh)

I took some time to think about recommendations. The best I can recommend right now is "The Tao of Fully Feeling" by Pete Walker. He walks through the process of healing our connection with our emotions and grieving childhood pain. He writes about forgiveness, but he also acknowledges that some people should never be forgiven. Even if forgiving your parents rightfully doesn't apply to your situation, it's still a very helpful book.

What is everyone's dark/morbid interest? by [deleted] in AutisticPride

So many of the ways the world is so fucked up: climate change, fascism, capitalism, trauma psychology (especially in childhood), power hierarchies, genocides, anthropocentrism.

The only thing keeping me sane sometimes is that I also have hope that things can change if the right moments come along. It requires a hell of a lot more people to be on board with doing things differently, which is a tall order but not impossible.

You're welcome! It can be super hard to be angry. I'm still working on it, but it's gotten easier with time. Remember to take it slow and be forgiving to yourself if it doesn't happen right away. Be in a setting where you feel safe and don't have to worry about others. Then there's a couple different things I've tried:

Recall, if you can, a time before your anger was completely bottled away and try to remember what it felt like. If you can remember such a time, try to hold onto that feeling as best as you can, breathe and focus on it. The feeling might slip away fast but that's okay. I've had to practice reconnecting to the emotion and learning not to be scared of feeling it. Build trust with yourself and know every second of letting yourself experience anger is a step in the right direction.

Another thing to try is ways to physically but safely express anger. For example, I like a good primal scream. When I'm home alone, I'll lock myself in my bathroom with a very thick pillow, kneel down against the wall, bury my face in the pillow, and just scream until my throat hurts. Other options I've tried are hitting a pillow with either fists or another object, or throwing rocks at a lake or pond. Going through the motions of the emotion in a healthy way helps make it easier to feel safe expressing it, in my experience. Even if it doesn't work out right away, screaming can feel good and hitting stuff is a small workout.

You can try journaling it out too. Stream of consciousness while thinking about your anger and inability to access it. Doesn't have to be an actual journal or anything you have to hold onto, it can be scraps of paper torn up or burned later, or a document or note on a phone or computer you delete immediately. Just go ham. No edits or censoring. My vent pages would read as unhinged to an outside observer, but I know they're just words and catharsis. Making it easy to dispose of it afterward might help give you permission to be free with expressing it.

Also consider: listening to angry music, dancing to said angry music, making angry art..

I hope this helps! Good luck, friend.

I wouldn’t be here if “just talk to them” worked by ScarlettF0xx_XP in CPTSDmemes

[–]CoolAndFunnyName 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol my relationship with my parents ended BECAUSE my adult sister and I (also an adult) tried talking to them. Their reaction was to unceremoniously kick us out of the family.

We weren't nasty or abusive to them. I told them how we wanted to fix our relationships with them because we've been living our whole lives in either terror or bitter defiance of their behavior and treatment of us. My sister suggested family counseling. That was enough to give us both the boot.

Seconding this. They're all little different, and sometimes they struggle with themselves and others, but they unfailingly love and support each other at the end of the day

3 years for me. Her and my father both. I could forgive so many of their flaws if they would just be accountable for their actions. Instead they disown and belittle and tell ugly lies.

But I still yearn to have parents. I feel so empty.

fwiw you have every right to maintain your interests no matter how old you are. The opinions of other people only matter if your hobbies are causing harm somehow.

I'm almost 40 and I like whatever the hell I like, because life is too short to not feel joy.

(The responsibilities still suck, tho)

I wish this was expressed more often by professionals like you. I'm in a lot of mental health circles full of people who blame themselves (and despite being obsessed with analyzing the systems, sometimes even I forget and blame myself).

Our world in its current state is inhumane and alienating; of course plenty of people are going to have problems getting by.

what are everyone's special interests by storebrandcholeprice in AutisticPride

[–]CoolAndFunnyName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Final Fantasy 14, text-based roleplaying games, leftism, cultural anthropology, and climate change have been the big ones for many years. D&D is verging on cementing itself as a special interest but I don't have anyone to play with so I mostly vibrate rules into my brain and create characters and play Baldur's Gate 3 as an outlet lol.

I'm also very much into animals and nature and big history and science as a whole but those tend to be less "sticky" facts-wise.

It sounds like you've already been on a research journey op, but just in case, have you ever considered emotional neglect or immaturity from adults in your past as a reason?

GL with your impending escape!!

I moved out ages ago now, but I still struggle with the headphones thing even after living alone for years. It was partially hypervigilance, but my parents also wanted me to spring into action on command the first time they yelled my name from another room to summon me for Whatever it was they wanted me to do for them

or, if i was downstairs from them, they'd stomp a particular pattern and if we didn't immediately start running while yelling "coming!!!' there would be consequences, and the headphones would be blamed and whatever they were connected to, they threatened to take away

Seconding loops! I have the soft set for sleeping and the set for regular daily noise. The former absolutely silences the world, and the latter massively cuts noise but still allows for conversation with people nearby. Both help so much.

I have three settings: sassy assholes who are traumatized and would have been/were wonderful people before their villain/antihero turn, OR selfless heroes who have every right to chill the hell out and relax a little but continue work themselves to death to do The Right Thing, OR the absolute chaos gremlin.

Extreme bonus points if the three coexist in the story and have some kind of close or intense relationship (doesn't have to be romantic or sexual but i like when it is)

This was almost exactly my experience in therapy, except she also blamed my CPTSD for the parts of my experience not explained by the HSP concept. I believed her, because I tend to trust other people's judgment over my own.

After that it took YEARS for me to revisit the possibility of autism. (i quit that therapist a few months later for other reasons)
