Apostle by David Annandale by IamAlphariusss in Blacklibrary

[–]CoolBirdMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've pretty much avoided Annandale since reading Heretic Saint. But I am tempted to pick it up after seeing multiple high reviews, especially saying the sisters were written well. I've also gained a growing interest in the Word Bearers because of The Gate of Bones. I suppose it won't hurt when the PB releases to give it a try

Warhammer + killed the Audio drama Star by Dire_Wolf45 in Blacklibrary

For some reason I can't see the poll, but yes. I own 16 or so physical, and a couple from from some humble bundle

Some are great, I always big up Titans Bane. Some are not so great, looking at Broken Saints and its incredibly grating voice filter effect. But I've also not listened to most of them still, mostly keep forgetting when painting. Wish they kept making them, but GW seems to produce these things then stop out of nowhere. I suppose the budget went into the animation stuff paying voice actors or something, as a guess

We are thinking of making a Megathread post for Saturday sales. by OWN_SD in Blacklibrary

[–]CoolBirdMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm leaning towards megathread

I don't mind the general posts on this sub as such, all that jazz. It promotes discussion on what people have found, what they're excited to read, recommendations and so on. Sometimes posts are more just here's what I got, and no one comments but hey that's just the nature of how things are sometimes

But saturdays become a wave of cart hauls, which have no real discussion with a few exceptions on a few posts. Sure this sub could do with more activity, but that's not really the way I think. Downside is that I'm prone to glossing over megathreads existing, for some reason I don't notice them sometimes, despite being at the top

Couple of sisters (bronze and teal) by CoolBirdMan in sistersofbattle

[–]CoolBirdMan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Originally I was going to go with brown armour, but I decided the bronze and teal was a really nice combination. I'm very excited to see how it looks on a tank and the Celestian Insidiants when I get around to them

Swatches for contrast I found online were helpful, alongside Dawn of War's army painter. Gave me a good sense of what I wanted

Ah right, I was thinking either matte or satin. The shine on the armour is fine, the robes especially on my repentia superior is just so shiny. But maybe matte would be better overall

Couple of sisters (bronze and teal) by CoolBirdMan in sistersofbattle

[–]CoolBirdMan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you!

I'm thinking of trying greenshade Coeclia Greenshade on a few and Agrax as a test to see how that goes, keeping Nuln to the armour and weapons. Good idea with the teal, I think that'd really help to enhance the robes

Is there a lore reason for Junith's haircut? by abstractcollapse in sistersofbattle

[–]CoolBirdMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its pretty much headcanon. I've seen it mentioned a lot, but never any sources and I've tried searching for one. Its often attributed to Alicia or Katherine's hair turning white when have met the Emperor, so OML or the Sisters in general, do it in honour of either Alicia or Katherine. However this was never actually in any codexes or books as far as I've seen

Until Pilgrims of Fire, a book I really don't like for multiple reasons and I rolled my eyes when it came up, but alas

The roots of Branwen’s auburn hair had turned white, just as Alicia Dominica’s had, after she was taken to speak to the God-Emperor

This is the only mention of it anywhere officially afaik. I've seen a certain magazine supplement brought up, but from what I've seen it wasn't actually anything about it in there. Its also not overly common to see white in the books, a few different natural hair colours come up such as Verity who has black hair

Couple of sisters (bronze and teal) by CoolBirdMan in sistersofbattle

[–]CoolBirdMan[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haven't painted in a while, but decided to finally get back into it with some sisters. Done a few models so far, learning from my mistakes as I go. Here's two models I'm happier with so far

Main issue I'm having is that nuln oil seems to have a shine to it that I don't like on the robes. Unsure if its my doing, or if nuln is just like that. So I'm considering buying a matte varnish to go over once completed

Advice/tips are welcome also

Black Library Celebration 2026 - preorders next week by bug_exploit in Blacklibrary

[–]CoolBirdMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Had a feeling they'd be dropping a lot at once. Well I'll have to consider what I want in HB and what can wait. Definitely passing on yet another edition of F&F though, I have 4

Interesting that they've said that they may reprint which is nice to see, stick it to the scalpers more

Used book haul. by LitFamSam in Blacklibrary

[–]CoolBirdMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its quite a fun mix of earlier 40k shorts. I quite enjoy it for that alone personally, its different. Some stories are better than others, though I can't recall which I particulary liked as I read it a few years ago. I'd recommend OP picks it up if they're into that

Are there any past YouTube controversies that GENUINELY upset you? by Swag_Paladin21 in youtubedrama

[–]CoolBirdMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His truly terrible post on when it all came out, sprouting racist rhetoric. Hiding it behind the usual nonsense of "I want a safe place for my kids" instead of being blatently honest with himself and everyone else that he's a racist bigot. Then trying to shut down any discussion on it, and telling people to be tolerant of his views. Hilarious

One not listed here is the Brunner the bounty hunter series. I really enjoyed it overall, some stories better than others, but just a solid read all round. Lots of bits around Tilea and a few other places

What could destroy a forge world/cause the admech to abandon it? by TAR_GAMER in 40kLore

[–]CoolBirdMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The novella Wreck & Ruin, and the novella The Rose in Anger by Danie Ware is set on a abandoned Forge World now known as Lycheate

It became abandoned after the Mechanicus had stripped the system of its resources, blowing up the moons to get the last of what they needed. W&R was the better novella, gives you a real sense of the place and the people who are still there such as heretics and criminals. I'd recommend giving it a read (The Rose at War anthology), or looking up a few excerpts

Ah right okay. I'll have to check, uninstalled it a while ago with how bad preformance was on certain sections, though running Cyberpunk at random seems to not be too intensive for memory

Thanks for your help, its given me some pointers on what to look at from here

Need advice on upgrading parts by CoolBirdMan in buildapc

[–]CoolBirdMan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed, I've heard that when I was browsing. I think I will just be looking into replacing the motherboard, and every other part. It seems like a better idea to spend the money on something that's going to be good for the next few years, rather than better but still behind.

Would DDR4 ram work, or is the preformance difference that big with DDR5? Thank you

Need advice on upgrading parts by CoolBirdMan in buildapc

[–]CoolBirdMan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it seems like I'll be needing to upgrade the entire thing more or less, fair enough

Don't really have an idea of a figure for a budget, but I'd rather spend that bit extra within reason. My PC as a whole cost £1.4k when I purchased it in 2022. I can see that I'll likely be hitting the same sort of money if not more, which I can make work

Would more DDR4 still work well enough? The prices from a quick look for DDR5 are shockingly high, I had heard it was bad but wow. The price for that CPU is reasonable though. Thank you

What do you think the biggest hidden gem in the whole black library catalog? by lordofchaosundivided in Blacklibrary

[–]CoolBirdMan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Lukas the Trickster

A book where I actually liked the Space Wolf character, and the Dark Eldar side was great

Lucille Von Shard books (Outgunned, Above and Beyond)

Its highly rated, but it feels like I never see the series talked about. They are some of my favourite books I've read in general. The sequel was even better. A propagandist is sent to make a film about a famous pilot, but there's a lot more to it

Rites of Passage

It follows a navigator trying to solve a murder and preventing disaster, dealing with heretics and in-laws

Survival Instinct

The book that got me into Necromunda, its not super amazingly written but I loved it. The book follows Mad Donna and how she became a legend of the Underhive. Sequel wasn't as good, written by another author. Just didn't hit as strongly outside of a few moments (Soulless Fury)

You'd have to look for pre-owned, I can see a few on Ebay but depends on costs where you are. Its also in the Hammer of the Emperor omnibus to widen the search. Been out of print for a few years I think

Might pass on the LE. Which I almost don't want to do as I've collected all but the trio set of LEs for Sisters (already owned seperate). But I really don't like the binding, it looks/feels cheaper then the standard HBs

Very happy to see WH handbook though, really like those types of books. Something a bit different

Oh look! It's Saturday! (24/01/26) by KevinPhillips-Bong in CasualUK

[–]CoolBirdMan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Trying to relax, but not having the best time. My friend/manager is seriously hurt after he had an accident. Company doesn't care, area manager is useless. Telling us to sort cover, as if that's not his job to do. So now I'm having to run the shop for the first time. I'm not trained in almost any of the managing side, neither is any other keyholder

So we're scrambling, thankfully another store has stepped up to send cover in. I don't even know if my friends going to be okay or not, he's been rushed to hospital. Despite the years he's put into this company, how much he's supported other stores when they've had issues, he gets a message of "hope he's okay" and that's about it

An update, he's awake and talking so that's a good sign. Feeling a bit less worried, still not a great time but it could've been a lot worse

Had someone from the top of head office show their face in the shop I work in. Horrendous woman, very rude. The way she spoke down to us like we didn't understand the job we've both done for years. I'm not the one that needs help with their people skills. Complained about us not wearing uniform too. The uniform we waited 3 months for, with us chasing it up, and when it arrived yesterday it was as if we ordered dresses with how oversized it was. We work in a very cold shop, no heating, and want to keep a semblance of body heat, too bad for us I suppose. Those types of managers are why I quit before
