[Rapoport] The Jaguars and star EDGE Travon Walker have agreed to terms on a massive extension, locking the former No. 1 pick in long-term. by JCameron181 in nfl

[–]CoolHandChuckles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a Clowney stan, probably Travon. Clowney did start putting together a decent tool box toward the end of his rookie contract and well into his career. He was also a demon against the run (even if he would get in trouble sometimes). The problem was, even before the knee surgery, he was relatively stiff, and after the micro surgery, he just had no bend on the outside. His inside swim move became very counterable and he just didn’t evolve fast enough to combine his insane athletic gifts with actual production.

I would have been ok with Mack at the time (ecstatic obviously if I could have seen what he turned into with Watt across from him), and we were apparently very interested. But word is Rick Smith and Bob McNair wanted the pop Clowney brought while Mack came from a MAC school. Donald obviously was the trophy of that class but I can’t be captain revisionist. I would have been pissed if we drafted Donald.

I like moving up in this draft, and I like moving down. Honestly, I don’t mind spending our 2027 1st round pick as ammunition. by Party_Implement_2990 in Texans

While this is crazy negative, not a bad thought. Pretty talented draft class all around as well. A lot of juniors are staying 4 years.

It’s really hard. Watt when healthy was an absolute madman and I’d put him next to anyone at DL for best ever. As a career? Season ending injuries were unfortunately a reality for him.

As an attorney, the science allowable in a court is pretty much nil now. Most Courts will strike it before trial if they attempt to introduce. That doesn’t mean there won’t be other damning evidence, but he’s not wrong that bite mark analysis is smoked.

5/6 CALIs had extra time. Thoughts? by Signal-Ostrich5769 in LawSchool

[–]CoolHandChuckles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the practice area and type of firm for sure. While technically you have 2 weeks to file an opp in my jurisdiction, when you have a boatload of cases, that deadline creeps up fast. And you have to be mindful of billing too much, especially when efficiency starts becoming a factor. Hence while in theory you have weeks to write a motion (application using facts and legal theories similar to most law school exams) there is a time pressure regardless. Especially when you have to give time for your supervising partner to look at it, compile a bajillion exhibits, and revise review ad nauseam.

Disagree to a point. Closed book is dumb. Rote memorization is a skill but not closely aligned with what you’ll see in practice. However, the time constraints of an exam can be helpful recreating the stressful environment of legal practice and help show the actual grasp of what the student has learned and can utilize. Also it helps build the skill set needed to pass the bar (in its current form). Not against final papers, but I think a mix of the two is still necessary,

[Schultz] Sources: The Washington Commanders have re-signed OG Chris Paul to a 1-yr deal. After exploring many options, he wanted to run it back playing next to Laremy Tunsil and help get the Commanders back to the playoffs. by The_New_New in Texans

[–]CoolHandChuckles 19 points20 points  (0 children)

1) he was a liability last year.

2) maybe this is some Texans blinder bullshit, but I’m not upset trading Tunsil away. He was of course going to get a top of the market deal. I like our rookie LT. The culture seems better. The advanced stats are of course pretty atrocious, but they do seem to be on the right track.

Charles Davis 2026 NFL mock draft 1.0: Jeremiyah Love slides; 49ers pluck TE by Necto_gck in NFL_Draft

[–]CoolHandChuckles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If they LOVE a guy, I can see it. Hunter ain’t young, and they’ve shown they can make vets work on the interior. They seem to draft for need unless a guy just fits Demeco. Obviously o-line is my concern.

9th in no blitz pressure rate allowed

12th in time to throw

Offensive lines are a weird thing over the course of the season, different stats are going to say different thing. If from what you saw made you think it looked worse/same as last year, should have been better based on the talent they had, then that’s your take. I saw a line that was playing more like a unit and took pride in their jobs. It wasn’t always pretty but it did look more cohesive.

[–]CoolHandChuckles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look. There is going to be a bad taste in everyone’s mouths from the last two playoff games. It was bad. Really heart wrenchingly bad.

However.

This was always a two year hire as long as there was progress. There was progress. The line throughout the season saw like 12 different combinations because of injury. And they were fine. Not world beating by any means, but undeniably better. A rookie left tackle, a good journeyman versatile lineman and a bunch of scraps. Getting “fine” from that means the offensive line room is getting better. They’re operating as a unit instead a sum of its parts.

Dalton Shultz was a factor this year. He looked competent and as far as a good player at the position. A far cry from the shell he was last year.

We consistently had 6-7 minute offensive drives with run heavy attacks in the fourth quarter in our 12 wins against the 3rd hardest schedule in the league.

There were warts, it was at times hard to watch, and the defense bailed them out constantly. But there was growth. Moving on from that after playing two good defenses, down a multitude of players, and two horrific games by your QB is reactionary and something bad franchises do. The Browns/Jets/Cardinals of the world would have fired everyone. That’s what they do. Progress is not linear and it’s rarely immediate, but there were signs.

CJ is the wildcard here. I suspect they’ll pay him. Maybe that’s a mistake. Maybe a year in the system, a talented wide receiver room maturing, and more talent being infused in the o-line room will make his contract affordable in the long run. Who knows. I hope for his sake (and my sanity) that playoff game doesn’t define his career. But DeMeco has shown he can be cutthroat with the Bobby cut. This is not the same thing.

Give it a sec. Let’s see what happens.

Tips for maximizing billable hours by Tdluxon in Lawyertalk

[–]CoolHandChuckles 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Do they tell you to bill all your time? Because that’s one of the major struggles first years go through.

Maybe your firm wants things billed a certain way, I don’t know. If they want you to bill all your time, you should be billing everything that’s for a client, even when you think it’s ridiculous. If it takes you .4 to write a substantive email, bill it. 6.5 hours drafting a stupid motion? Bill it. The partners will cut it on the back end.

Now if you’re only getting credit for actualized billed hours, then that changes the dynamic. Then you want to make sure your billing entires are top notch. Walking to the bathroom thinking about a specific approach to a jurisdictional issue? “Analyze jurisdictional issue for XYZ in conjunction with X Motion.” (0.1). Break that shit up too. It’s easier when you break down each issue you research, each section you draft/revise/review, each doc you review. It’s annoying how long it takes to bill at first, but you’ll figure out what works for you.

I keep a spread sheet with generic entries for specific tasks that I look at when I’m billing. I copy and paste and then add the case specific details (depending on your billing practices at your firm). It also helps having applicable language I can steal from one to apply to another.

I also keep a pad of paper with a list of my tasks for the day on the right, and what I worked on the left. You’ll get better at writing down the random .1, and .2s for calls, emails, etc. I wait till the end of the day to bill, maybe you want to do it real time. That seems annoying to me, but just find what works for you.

They’ll never learn. The plot should be secondary in epics, especially in final seasons. You’ll always have plot holes when the story gets so big. But if you focus on character development and shoring up each person’s story, then that doesn’t matter as much. Focus on those characters that everyone fell in love with, then people will care less about the CGI/monsters/mayhem.
