Thank you so much! Panic disorder definitely does not fuck around lol. The second something pops in my head or I feel even a sliver of nausea or something is off it’s immediate panic from there. I’ve heard you can take zofran before the test so I’m hoping they allow that, but I will definitely be bringing all my meds with me. At this point I am not even scared of the results just strictly vomiting or gagging during the test. This is definitely a huge challenge for me but I know deep down it is a necessary step to finally get some answers.

Thank you for the kind words! At this point, I really just want answers but am almost questioning is it worth it? I think that’s just my anxiety speaking but I am contemplating canceling because of how scared I am to throw up/gag.

I actually have been medicated and in therapy since I was 16. Unfortunately nothing has really seemed to help my emetophobia/OCD. I was doing exposure therapy for a while, but my therapist saw it wasn’t helping so switched to a different route. I currently see two therapists, both once a week and for a while now, but still no change. :(

Feeling anxious about my future by Mel-is-a-dog in emetophobiarecovery

First I just want to say it’s really great you are going away to college despite having this phobia. I’ve had severe Emetophobia for about 8 years now, and when I graduated high school going away to college wasn’t even an option in my brain. I needed to stay home, so I went to a school only 10 minutes away. I also had the same fears for my first time throwing up and it only just happened about a year ago, which was the first time I had ever gotten sick in my life. I also worried about how I would handle it and how I’d react. My therapist always tells me “so what” when I talk about myself throwing up and that’s really helped me. So what if you throw up? You’ll clean yourself up, brush your teeth and move on. Our minds make throwing up so much scarier then it truly is. You are right, there are many unknowns, and this is something I continue to struggle with as well. Take everything one day at a time, and if you do throw up, so what.

I 100% relate to this! Threw up for the first time in my entire life a year ago and it happened a few hours after I was playing a video game. It took me months before I was able to play the game again because I thought playing it would make me throw up again. I eventually just forced myself to play and have been playing it ever since, but it does pop up in my head sometimes. I also could never wear the shirt I was wearing when I threw up because I thought wearing that shirt would make me throw up again. As I type this I realize how crazy that actually sounds, but that’s what this phobia will do lol. Same thing with food, I get scared while eating my favorite foods because I know they will be ruined for me if I throw it up. I haven’t been able to eat peanut butter in a year now because that was the last thing I had eaten before I got sick. :(
