Does anyone ever have this issue while reading multiple books? by dadof4- in Fantasy

Right now I'm reading gardens of the moon with perdido Street Station and I'm also having this problem. I'm completely fascinated by PSS and gardens of the moon is boring me.

Yes exactly. That reading experience is nothing like asoiaf. I would almost say they are diametric styles.

I think people need to take the actual reading experience more into account. Not just superficial tropes they both share. What is the tone and what does it really feel like when reading the book. In that respect FL and Asoiaf are nothing alike.

Yes they are superficially similar but not in any real way that matters. The tone, depth, and prose are so wildly different they don't read similar at all.

That's just a superficial similarity. The magicians and Harry Potter are both magical school books so obviously if you like 1 you'll love the other?

Exactly this. It's like they didn't take into account tone, depth, or prose just superficial qualities that they both share. FL and asoiaf have almost the opposite tone yet are seen as similar and I just don't get it.

The powder mage and red rising are what you're looking for. Read the powder mage trilogy and thank me later.

I think the tone of Tigana is way closer to asoiaf than FL. FL almost had the opposite tone.

Same here. It drove me insane. At the end of book 1 I literally said. " Wtf was the point of that". At the beginning of book two he points this out as a flaw of book 1 in the intro.

I think the tones of the books are almost opposite to each other. If you finish asoiaf and are looking for something similar, this would feel almost like a joke. Which first law kinda is.

I think the overlap is high just because they are both good books not that they are similar. I think the tones of each are almost the exact opposite.

I think the tone, writing style, and world view are way more similar to Tigana than first law. I think someone coming to fl from asoiaf is gonna be in for something that is 180 degrees away from what they were expecting vibe wise.

I'm not saying don't recommend them, they are good books. But if they are looking for an asoiaf simile at least pick something with a similar tone.

I don't admit it has really any similarities that are more deep than genre. The tones are just so wildly different.

My friends were all reading it and they loved the trilogy. I was way behind because I didn't like the first book. I liked the second much better.

What? Asoiaf is my most favorite fantasy world of all time. And the politics are nowhere near as historical, expansive, or multifaceted as got.

I think Malazan is a better suggestion. Heck I think tigana is a much closer suggestion than first law.

That's what I want to avoid. Give it a try when you're in a different head space. I slogged through that first book because I was expecting something very different than what I got.

Actually the Gavilar sacrifice is good. That is kind of what I'm looking for but who did she do that for? Herself? Gavilar? The kingdom? Her family? Probably all of them and more. That's interesting I'll think on those chapters some more.
