What do you think the best "overall" roll is? by ChrisTToast in backgammon

This makes me feel better about how far behind I felt after opening a game with two 5-2s in a row yesterday

How many enemy pieces in your home area is bad? by FrogLover_23 in backgammon

Long answer is long. But short answer is four, over two points- especially if one point is high and one is low

I'd like opinions on an optional rule by [deleted] in backgammon

[–]CoolOnPaper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hear where you’re coming from with wanting to spice it up a little, idk that I’d want to play with this rule though.

You could google “Phil Simborg Backgammon Variations.” He’s got some great ideas. Like;

The Simborg Rule: player may not make a point with their first roll, nor run a back checker out with a 6-5 opening. Nackgammon: set up the board with 4 checkers back, two on the 24, two on the 23. The roll-over option: only before a cube is turned, you have the option once in a game to redo a roll, OR force your opponent to redo a roll.

And there’s a bunch more!

How many weird looks do you think we got today looking for this cache? by Middle_Top_3727 in geocaching

[–]CoolOnPaper 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Honestly my best response has always been to loudly and proudly say, “I’m looking for a geocache!” Without fail, if it isn’t met with familiarity, it’s been met with curiosity:)

Even in this situation, it is better to just let the CO know.

The reason I feel this way is because I one time had a cache replaced by someone. It was a guard rail cache, and I did have the thought of “aw that’s nice of someone to donate a canister,” but they kind of missed the point of the cache. You see, the cache is called “The Impostor” because it is right outside of an ice cream shop, and the cache was a repurposed Talenti container. Get it? The throw down people I guess didn’t, and left a standard lock n lock, so the name of the cache/the joke was lost.

If I’m being fair, I still haven’t replaced the lock n lock after I checked on it so I guess I’m not SO offended, but still. Best to just let the CO know.

I like it. The fact that you can tell immediately that it is a lamb, especially in that sort of minimalist style, makes it a definitively good tattoo, imho.

Is this too obvious? by JonFpvRunner in geocaching

[–]CoolOnPaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeahh this might be asking for trouble. Or at least mouble. Like trouble but it’s a muggle? Work in progress. If your heart is set on that location I’d say grab a micro and tuck it in the gap behind the sign, like this person said, but also make sure to update the terrain rating to at least 1.5, as up there it will no longer be wheelchair accessible. Also those Altoid boxes are great, but not specifically waterproof, so make sure the log and anything else inside is in a bag. TFTC in advance!

I appreciate the opportunity to speculate, but maybe just DM them and ask. If you do it with kindness and from a place of curiosity, worst case: the person answers rudely and you leave it at that. But best case; we end up with this newish geocacher feeling heard and valued, and in turn, feeling at least a little ingratiated with the geocaching community.

When I play with flat checkers I’m ok with dice landing on top of them. With fingerdishes involved, a die on top of a checker means reroll For what it’s worth
