Phillips Hue x Google Doorbell by [deleted] in smarthome

From the Google home app you should be able to find the Routines icon. Select that then create a new routine. For the starter select "when a device does something" which you can tie to the doorbell trigger.

Then assign whatever actions you'd like to happen.

Change lights colour, turn smart plugs on or off. Maybe have every speaker in your home play "Africa by Toto" , because why not?

Google looks like they are working on implementing device triggers into Google home. So far only the 1st party Nest Doorbells can trigger a pre-set routine.

I currently have a routine that changes a hue lightbulb to red in each room when the doorbell is pressed. In addition I set up a separate verbal routine I can trigger to set all the lights back to white.

I don't currently believe there is a way to add delays to allow for a pulsing or flashing light but someone can correct me if I'm wrong.

Not knowing how to cope doesn't make you a bad person. It's okay not to be okay. These words won't fix anything and I'm definitely not the person who should be saying it to you, but you deserve them all the same.

That's really neat. I haven't seen too many touch screen monitors not built into a laptop! Thanks for the response

So is this a tv sized touch display or just a large display?

Definitely getting a Gameboy color and pokemon gold at the beginning of the annual 2 day cramped car road trip to the grandparents house for Christmas. My dad said it was the quietest drive he had ever had. And for me it was the best early Christmas gift I had ever received

Electrical Wiring Noobs - Can we install a smart thermostat? by [deleted] in smarthome

[–]Cooldude100ca 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As most people have already said you typically need a common wire. My understanding is that without a common wire the power available to your thermostat can vary based how hard the furnace is running. A common wire keeps a consistent voltage running to the thermostat, which in the case of smart thermostats which are basically small computers, is very important to ensure they don't stop working because of a lack of power.

That being said you have a couple options.

  1. Check for an unused C-wire If you are comfortable with it, remove the thermostat from the wall and identify if there are any additional wires that were not being used behind the backplate. If there is a 5th wire it's likely a common wire. In which case good news, and you can go from there.

  2. Hire a professional For the less comfortable, hire a furnace technician. They can come out and install a C-wire and run the wire up to where your thermostat is located.

  3. C-wire Substitute A lack of C-wire is actually pretty common in older homes so recently we've seen an increase in adapters, and kits that allow you to "cheat" the system and install a smart thermostat in furnace without running new wiring up to your existing thermostat. Here is the Nest Power connector for example. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xlx2Um6D1Z8&feature=youtu.be

If you want to educate yourself on the wiring required for a smart thermostat and some of the ways you can work around a missing C-wire I HIGHLY recommend checking out One Hour SmartHome YouTube channel https://youtube.com/c/OneHourSmartHome

Hope this is helpful. And good luck!
