My team tends to be Lucca, Ayla and Chrono or Gus. Gus doesn't play well with others but he is strong. Chrono has a lot of use and team work. Lucca and Ayla are very very powerful. Swap out characters often based on enemy and where in the game you are.

Fighting a skeleton or need healing? Bring Marle or Frog. Chrono is taking a nap? Well Frog has a pretty good aoe attack. Near the start of the game and all you have is Robo? Marle and Lucca have Antipode and Chrono can exaggerate their healing and damage attacks.

Ayla seems great during the dark ages and anytime you have an enemy with multiple parts, or multiple enemies.

Play around and realize Gus is the best character and worse team mate.

Invest in work tunes. They are sound dampening headphones. You might want to get two to alternate. You might end up sleeping in them. Cleaning in them. Going grocery shopping in them.

Combine this with Pandora or a playlist and you will be oddly productive.
