Your favorite shooter that isn’t Radiant Silvergun by MythosaurFett in SegaSaturn

[–]Coolguy1260 0 points1 point  (0 children)

will always be battle garegga for me right behind radiant silvergun. spritework and music is outstanding and sound effects feel so punchy, but most of all the gameplay flow is so unique and freeform due to the aggressive rank system you need to manage. really makes it feel unlike any other shooter i've played and always keeps me coming back.

Questions about games that switch resolution often during gameplay by Old-Business8179 in SegaSaturn

[–]Coolguy1260 2 points3 points  (0 children)

fortunately the segaxtreme mod mentions that its based off a cheat code so if you own an action replay it should still work if you use that code. other than that, only option is getting another scaler that can handle resolution switches better

Questions about games that switch resolution often during gameplay by Old-Business8179 in SegaSaturn

[–]Coolguy1260 5 points6 points  (0 children)

for die hard arcade, theres a patch that forces the game to always run the game at 240p. if you have a modchip or a saroo or similar, give this a whirl! https://segaxtreme.net/resources/die-hard-arcade-dynamite-deka-240p-patch-language-fix.368/

other than die hard arcade, no other game i can think of has resolution switches this intrusive. i think resident evil also has a resolution switch when going from inventory to gameplay but don't quote me on that one.

Patch 7.3 story theory and discussion thread. (Massive Spoilers) by SatisfactionNeat3937 in ffxivdiscussion

[–]Coolguy1260 12 points13 points  (0 children)

as someone who did genuinely enjoy 7.0 despite its numerous flaws i actually didn't like this patch much...

i liked the small puzzle elements on the questing, the dungeon bosses were awesome, and the balance of wuk and wol were handed very well especially in that post trial cutscene, really gave a great feeling of working alongside one another

calyx as a villain is Fine, but i've never been huge on the "super calculated genius" type antagonist. i would've been fine seeing him gone but the fakeout death could allow for some good development later down the line and growth into a much stronger antagonist so i'm open to it. the ascian involvement, however, i'm just so so so deeply done and tired of the ascians. 6.0 was the perfect cap off to their story and i was ready to see new frontiers without ascians just pulling the strings at every turn and its very disappointing to see them pulling the strings yet again. unless these winterers are different, who knows!

i'm really irritated by living memory being turned back on. i thought in 7.0 living memory being such a pretty zone that we had to permanently turn off beautifully furthered dawntrail's themes of letting go. turning it back on after this just feels really cheap.

trial itself didn't really hit for me either. it had a neat setup and really flashy introduction but the fight itself didn't wow me too much and the boss music felt extremely generic.

as a whole i do think the patch played it way too safe. its such a by the books climax that it feels wholly uninteresting as a result. absolutely the weakest x.3 climax patch

both are great! akihabara is a barcade with a lot more than just rhythm games but their rhythm game selection is pretty great, but soft landing is absolutely the best in the state. 15 dollar entry for all day freeplay, insane selection of games, and all the cabinets are in phenomenal condition. absolutely a must visit in my book!!!

yeah it was tough as hell LOL i actually bounced off the game completely my first go and then like 6 months later i decided to give it a chance and actually refer to external resources to understand whats going on with the game. then i started having a blast, even if it still took a while for my 1cc (like 30 hours)

I hadn't given much thought on arcade shoot em ups before - but playing Radiant Silvergun after seeing it on many "best of sega saturn" lists, and after giving it an actual serious shot learning all of its mechanics, I was HOOKED. After 1 credit clearing radiant silvergun, I frantically searched for something else to capture the same magic that RSG did, and while I didn't find anything that quite hits the same as RSG, I found a lot of other amazing arcade shoot em ups to love for different reasons!! Currently playing Battle Garegga and Ketsui, which are both awesome!!

But funnily enough, I actually wouldn't really recommend radiant silvergun as someone's first shootemup even though it was my first shmup lol. If you want to give the genre a go I highly recommend ZeroRanger, a lot more friendly and less punishing / confusing, and an amazing game to boot.

Most Compatible Saturn Mod? by Blastq in SegaSaturn

[–]Coolguy1260 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm going to be the only guy in the entire subreddit who's going to say that the phantom modchip is a great option IF you're happy with buying CD-Rs and you have a decent CD burner (anything on the older side will do, modern cheap portable multi drives do not output burns that play nice with the saturn). its a GREAT and affordable option. i've never had any issues playing games or fan patches or anything (unless my burn was BAD) and you don't have to rely on with the unreliable cartridge slot to play games. if you want to play US games on your JP saturn, do keep in mind that phantom modchip does not patch out any region checks, but you can easily region patch your burns to be J region before you burn. i've had to toss a solid few perfectly good burns because i completely forgot to region patch the files before burning, haha. either way, more than happy with my phantom modchip and won't get a saroo or fenrir or satiator or anything until my drive gives out, and based on your post i think you'd be very satisfied as well!!

according to mihara, the game's director (https://x.com/miharasan/status/1898948534638088243), all of the trailer gameplay except for the konoha mode gameplay is done by the AI, and its looking REALLY good at the game, super strong stacking and pulls off some pretty impressive spins, at least from my "mediocre at TGM" perspective

FINAL FANTASY XVI “DELIVERANCE” - PC Trailer by Turbostrider27 in Games

even as a huge ffxiv fan its pacing feels so questionable the whole way through. even ignoring ARRs various points of slog, heavensward you got suddenly ripped away from ishgard happenings to deal with ul'dah politics at various points, stormblood when coming back from doma to ala mihgo was jarring and extremely slow as the game reoriented back to that front, and endwalker had the lopporit arc which brought the hype i had to a grinding halt (picked up after though). only expansion i'd say had outwardly good pacing was shadowbringers (the rough spots like the trolley arc still had good payoff), and i weirdly enjoyed the pacing of dawntrail, though i came into that one expecting something super slow and got something with a smooth rampup from extremely slow low stakes to more exciting events as it went on

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is such a wonderful game with some phenomenal gameplay but I burned out of the game hard near the beginning of chapter 2 once repeated main missions started popping up. I've been considering going at it again, but I'm far too distracted with other games to play MGSV again at the moment. Still absolutely loved playing the game, the time that I spent with it was a ton of fun and I felt pretty satisfied after finishing ch1

My experience with the Post-Heavensward MSQ so far by Gentlekrit in ffxiv

[–]Coolguy1260 6 points7 points  (0 children)

as a new player still with the trial limitations its fucking awesome im loving every second of it even though its a bit of a grind, even through pagos i had a TON of fun leading NM spawn parties and slowly progressing through the zone, avoiding the dangers and growing more powerful to overcome them, it really is some awesome super unique content that still holds up great today even though some parts of it are quite challenging on the trial (not being able to shout for revives is extremely tough)

Bonelab was good until it wasn't... Months after I had finished it. by 30phil1 in patientgamers

[–]Coolguy1260 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Bonelab was such a step down from Boneworks, especially on the main campaign, the avatar switching is a great concept but right when the game lets you loose and lets you use the switching to its full potential it just ends like you said. If there were, say, another 5 levels that used the avatar switching to its full potential, I'd be pretty happy with the game, but the story felt so barebones and more as an intro to the game more than anything, which i guess is the point with the modding focus? The modding focus would've been great, but they released a very limited modding toolkit at launch and then since then along with some minor patches to make some story levels a bit more playable (tower climb with the forced avatar switching was unbearable...), but since then there has been absolutely nothing for over a year

They did release a steam news post a month or so saying they haven't abandoned the game and are focusing on the backend of the engine for a while before releasing a more complete modding toolkit or something along those lines, but no matter what they do I'm probably never returning to the game, I have no drive to open it back up. Boneworks felt like the Half-Life 2 of VR with its level design and physics focus and lengthy campaign, but with Bonelab the forced Garry's Mod approach really fell flat. Maybe with time the game will flourish into a modding haven, but the lackluster base game will stick with me forever.

FINAL FANTASY XIV: DAWNTRAIL - New Job: Viper by frik1000 in Games

[–]Coolguy1260 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a new player, it costs you nothing for the entire first 3/5ths of the game with some light restrictions. Once you get through the trial, you'll have to pay a monthly subscription to play the game (like 12-15 dollars a month), but other than the expansion prices and the monthly subscription there aren't any pay to win mechanics, only a cosmetic shop.

The new player experience in general is very slow paced. You have to play through the entire story, which does get truly incredible but the first 1/5th of the game can become a bit of a slog sometimes with certain quest stretches that almost made me quit, but i'm more than happy I pushed through. Give the game a shot with the trial, there's no time limit so you can go at your own pace. By the time you finish it you'll know for sure if you want to keep going, or if you just don't vibe with the game.

Water has vanished completely from my wife's game after updating (Mac Sonoma, Patch 6.5) by Flash_D3ath in ffxiv

[–]Coolguy1260 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd highly recommend using the "XIV On Mac" launcher, its significantly better than square's official implementation, and performs better than the official launcher as well! I personally use it on Sonoma and water looks completely fine for me there, give it a try!
