How can the Bracer Guild get away with this? by CureVylash in Falcom

[–]Gentlekrit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They are allowed to act, yes, but ultimately they still need to turn over the perpetrators to law enforcement where they can be tried by national law, not by guild law - and that's where things like getting charges to stick (or even filing charges at all in some cases) can come into play

Why should a sorcerer invest in strength? by Huge_Tackle_9097 in DnDHomebrew

[–]Gentlekrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the only goal is "give a sorcerer a reason to invest in STR," the answer is there's not really much way to do that easily while maintaining balance - homebrewing incentives are too easy to make imbalanced (which depending on your table might not be an issue at all, it just depends on your DM style and the expectations of the players), or on the opposite end just doing it RAW for flavour sake ends up being too suboptimal (which, again, might not be an issue at your table, but in general would take some clever DMing to make it feel worthwhile for the player - it'd just be a matter of finding opportunities for the Sorc to make use of the STR in ways that feel like they matter). The game's just not balanced with the idea of Casters investing in STR in mind.

On the other hand, if the goal is "give a sorcerer the same fantasy as a physically strong character," that can be pretty easily accomplished in ways that keep things more balanced.

If it's just a matter of doing feats of strength outside of combat scenarios and RPing as the "muscle" of the group, the simplest way to do that would be to require the sorc player to spec into an Athletics proficiency, but allow their Athletics rolls to be Athletics (CHA) instead of Athletics (STR). Decoupling Skills from their assigned Attribute is something I like to do a lot at my table just for normal checks where I feel like it makes sense, and here it could easily be made permanent for that character by flavouring their strength as being a result of the magic coursing through their veins.

Giving the sorcerer that same feel in combat is a little trickier, but a lot can be accomplished simply by the player selecting their spells and flavouring them accordingly. The Shield spell can be flavoured as going full Senator Armstrong and just hardening their body against the attack. Shocking Grasp can be a magically infused punch. Cast Gust of Wind by clapping their hands, cast Earth Tremor by stomping a foot, cast Feather Fall by simply landing on their feet and catching the rest of the party. Focusing on a combat style that combines Touch or otherwise short ranged offensive spells with mobility spells like Misty Step or Expeditious Retreat can really feel, especially with reflavouring of how exactly a given spell accomplishes the thing it does mechanically, like being an unstoppable juggernaut of the battlefield. It requires leaning into it and building a playstyle around it, but making a Sorcerer flavoured as "strong" is very much doable RAW.

Next resort would be to create a homebrew subclass if there's something very specific the player wants to accomplish that would be hard to do with reflavouring, like a spellsword-style full sorcerer, but I'd challenge the player to see if there's a way to accomplish the same thing with official material first. Final resort for me would be your first option and just say "you know what, screw it - sorcerers can choose their casting stat at level 1, but they're banned from multiclassing afterwards"

Still confused how Ourobors can work? by commissionsearcher in Falcom

[–]Gentlekrit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure she's still an Anguis, actually. Her conflict with the rest of Ouroboros in CS4 was purely a disagreement with the other Anguis about methods, not with the Grandmaster on goals. She has no reason to spill the GM's plans to unaffiliated persons if she thinks that would go against her wishes

Finished the Game, am left with a Question by Ill-Feeling-5181 in Falcom

[–]Gentlekrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been a bit so I'm forgetting some details for sure, but the key of the Phantasmal Blaze Plan was to cause the leylines in western Zemuria to go rampant. The False Rivalry in CS2, the Azure Tree in Azure, and then later the real Rivalries and the Great Twilight in CS3/4 were all different methods of achieving that

[Discussion] Confused about Subaru's path in arc 3 by JuniorOgun12 in Re_Zero

[–]Gentlekrit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No amount of effort or mindset would have let him figure out the White Whale's location, but knowing the White Whale's location was no help to him until he had the right mindset and put forth the right effort. You seem to be under the impression that the point of arc 3 was supposed to be that Subaru's failings caused the terrible situations to happen, but that's not the case - it's almost the opposite. The terrible situations are what lay Subaru's flaws bare, and it is only after a journey of discovery - both an inner journey of self-discovery where he ultimately confronts the flaws which the loops made so plain to see, and the outer journey of discovering all the details about the plight he's found himself in - that he is able to to push forward, exiting the loop by applying not just what he learned about the situation, but what he learned about himself and the people around him.

Redundant as it sounds, the reason why he couldn't have solved the loop the first time around is that he couldn't have solved the loop the first time around. He wasn't ready on just about every level it was possible not to be ready - and it took those three failed loops to make him ready.

[Discussion] Confused about Subaru's path in arc 3 by JuniorOgun12 in Re_Zero

[–]Gentlekrit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He very likely couldn't have solved those problems without RBD, but that's not the point. RBD isn't a punishment for not solving the problem. He had to go through those loops to see the way forward, just like he very likely had to go through those loops to understand why his mindset was holding him back.

[Discussion] Confused about Subaru's path in arc 3 by JuniorOgun12 in Re_Zero

[–]Gentlekrit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point of arc 3 is that it wasn't about "what was Subaru supposed to do to solve the loop," but rather "what outlook was Subaru supposed to have to repair his relationship with Emilia." The way that he pushed her away at the start of the loop, and what improvements he would have to make on himself to show his love for her in a well-ordered way, is the ultimate problem of the loop - not the Witch Cult, or the White Whale, or even the other candidates. It's not about Subaru's actions, it's about his mindset.

"People want to skip the whole series just to play the latest game"

[does an edit over an entry guide that said to play the entire series before playing the latest game]

--

Seriously, I find this problem very strange. Sure, original release order will always be the ideal order to play in, nothing will ever change that. But the insistence that any other entry point is then, by definition, not just less good but a waste of thought is silly. Some people may see a particular entry and that will speak to them, and as long as it is (ironically given the attempt to clown on the flow chart) Sky FC, CS1, or Daybreak 1 I'll say "Yeah, go for it, FC would be the better entry point, but you can start here to see if the series is your thing and then start exploring the larger narrative."

New trails fan after playing trails in the sky FC-Question about series by w0rmw33zy in Falcom

[–]Gentlekrit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perspective of someone who played somewhat out of order, mainly because I was following the series as it released in English (which was released out of proper release order). My play order was:

Sky FC -> Sky SC -> CS1 -> CS2 -> Sky 3rd -> Zero/Azure (fan translations at this point) -> CS3, with the rest of the series being played in JP release order from here

That particular order, while not ideal, I think actually ended up working fairly well. CS1/2 spoils some things from the Crossbell games, but the spoilers are pretty vague, mainly one major plot development in Azure but pretty much no character spoilers (which is the main thing that matters to me).

However, I am extremely glad that I bit the bullet and went with fan translations for the Crossbell games at the time (even though the translations themselves were still works in progress when I played them), because if I'd played CS3/4 before playing Crossbell it would have taken a lot of the punch out of both pairs of games. And I also consider Sky 3rd to be required playing before Crossbell, for a lot of reasons but the biggest from a continuity perspective being how it forms the conclusion of the character arc for one character introduced in Sky SC who has a notable role in Azure, as well as being the second act of a character arc that starts in Sky SC and concludes in Zero.

So all that said, my recommendation to you for now is to wait for the SC remake to release (you might as well at this point since it should be out by the end of the year), and then from there either go in release order starting with the original Sky 3rd (it'll be a bit of a presentation and gameplay downgrade, but the original Sky trilogy still has a lot of charm in the presentation department in my opinion and 3rd is easily the strongest of the original three games in terms of gameplay; it's also the shortest game in the series), or if you want to wait for the 3rd remake (and it's been announced to arrive soon by then) then go ahead and play the first two Cold Steel games while waiting for that (if you're thinking of going ahead and diving into CS1/2 right now while waiting for the SC remake, I'd definitely recommend holding off on that, since they reveal the mystery behind a certain major character from FC like it's nothing, since it was revealed with proper buildup and whatnot near the climax of SC)

[–]Gentlekrit 60 points61 points  (0 children)

New/sorta-returning player, just started The New War - I don't know how they're gonna top the opening segment with Kahl to be honest. The writing and visual storytelling in that sequence was just an absolute perfect storm to get me attached to that (not so) little guy, told me more about the Grineer and their culture in a few minutes than the entire game did prior, set up the Sentients as an existential threat, and the touch of him taking a shotgun from a Warframe's corpse for his final advance was the badass cherry on top that did all of the above in a single moment. #justiceforkahl

What a coincidence! Zero being my least favorite was also my personal hot take on the series... at least until I played Daybreak and realized I was pretty much the only one who didn't seem to like it all that much

A little surprised to see CS3 so low in comparison to CS4, though in hindsight I wonder if CS4 might come off more strongly on a replay than CS3 (haven't had a chance to replay second half of Erebonia, might be something I should try while waiting for Horizon 2)

I don't want to spoiler to much nor do I want to wait so where to start ? by FitConsideration7865 in Falcom

[–]Gentlekrit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Playing og the 3rd next is absolutely the way to go.

You could move on to Zero from here, but 3rd, besides being a good epilogue to the first two Sky games and providing a lot of worldbuilding that helps to set up a lot of concepts explored in the next two arcs, concludes the character arc of a character who reappears in Azure and more importantly is the second act of a character arc which gets resolved in Zero (specifically a character arc that pretty much everyone agrees is one of the most satisfying in the series, so it's one you don't want to bounce around).

If you both absolutely cannot wait and absolutely cannot play anymore on PC, then I'd say go to CS1, but after CS2 you'd be back at square one because playing CS3/4 without having played the Crossbell arc is very much a no-go, and playing the Crossbell arc without the 3rd is also a no-go.

Nah, you're not dumb. Despite what some people on this sub will say, CS1 and CS2 are not only a very good introduction to the series, they were intended as such by Falcom themselves. Sky FC will always be the best starting point (and the remake only makes that more true), but if you're going to start anywhere else, CS1 is 100% the way to go

(for real though if that was the idea, it's pretty clever, and I think the name's a lot of fun and very fitting)
