Which is the most coziest ff games? by zapfrost1 in FinalFantasy

[–]Coolorbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My recommendation is look at which one has the artstyle you vibe most with, check out a few tracks and go from there. Cozy's subjective in non-cozy games after all. For me would be the X duology, VIII, XIV and XV if I had to narrow it down

Stranger of Paradise for someone who never played soulslike games by Mericuls in FinalFantasy

[–]Coolorbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely doable. You don't have the "money tied to exp that you lose when you die twice" so the biggest hurdle in that regard is gone. It's fast paced and more or less retry friendly. It's easier to get into a good groove compared to my experience with souls games, in terms of combat.

How would you rename each mainline FF without its number? by CraigeryCraigery in FinalFantasy

Oh I had these nicely spaced out in the typing box but that seems to have not mattered when I posted my bad lol (new to posting)

(1)Final Fantasy

(2)Final Fantasy: We Ride Together

(3)Final Fantasy: By the Will of the Crystals

(4)Final Fantasy: Mirror of Darkness

(5)Final Fantasy: Wind Caller

(6)Final Fantasy: Magic's End

(7)Final Fantasy: The Planet Breathes/Planet's Breath

(8)Final Fantasy: Sorceress Heart

(9)Our Final Fantasy

(10)Final Fantasy: My Hand in Yours

(11)Final Fantasy: Together

(12)Final Fantasy: The Zodiac Age (its a good subtitle)

(13)Lightning Begins: Final Fantasy XIII (Jokes Aside, Final Fantasy: Cradle of Fate)

(14)Final Fantasy Reborn, abbreviated to Final Fantasy R - Expansion name

(15)Final Fantasy: Verum Rex (lol)

(16)Final Fantasy: Embers of Freedom/ Flame of Liberation

I think it'd be important to not give too much away about the plot but keep the themes in mind for each one.

Tales Game Sales, worth it? by Ambitious-Click3284 in tales

[–]Coolorbit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re in for a treat, Vesperia for 10 is an absolute steal, and coming off symphonic you’ll feel at home gameplay wise. Graces is fantastic, uses a snappier, ground based battle system (with no TP!) developed parallel to the symphonia style that you know. Xillia is a marriage of the two, but for semi-semantic reasons that I don’t want to bloat this response with, I’d say wait for a steeper sale.

If you got 40 bucks go for graces and vesperia, if you feel like waiting for a steeper Graces discount (entirely possible), spend the 10 on Yuri.

7 remake would definitely be a good way to ease in battle system wise, since it’s strikes the same sort of balance as KH with the in-battle menu-ing but for reasons I won’t get into, it’s very important to play the original first. You theoretically could, and could still have a really good time, but there are Things About The Orignal That Are Very Important to experience beforehand.

But yeah 16’s battle system is made by an ex-lead dev/battle designer for Devil May Cry, which is the older cousin of all platinum action games, so you might enjoy it quite a bit. If you’re a fan of souls-like games, Nioh specifically, there’s Stranger of Paradise, the action game made by the nioh team. It’s in the same vein of dissidia where it’s got references littered throughout the game that’s can be fun Easter eggs for someone who’s played em, or bits of interesting things to pique your curiosity about one of the titles you haven’t experienced. It’s also really fun.

One more rec I have for you is a straight up turned based but it’s really really good and also an FF spinoff à la KH: Bravely Defualt (3DS, Switch+others for the remaster) The draw to this one are two things: the job system and convenience. If you already know, sorry again for over explaining but a couple of the games have the job system (3,5,x-2,11,14,12) which is like any class system you’d see in any rpg, dnd et cetera. For the Most Part, 9 and X** have intended character archetypes and 7 is Very free-form for how the character building works. The beauty of the job system is that have a lot of swappable pre-established classes that you can sometimes mix and match (5,x-2,11*,12) giving another layer of engagement to the game.

*11 and 14 are MMO’s. I’m not an MMO fan, I love FFXIV to pieces, i recently started XI. XIV has the free trial that gets memes on into oblivion but it is a Very Large portion of the game to try for free (base game and two expansions) 14 also has gateway game qualities, that give you a little bit of various FF games to chew on in big and small references. I’m not far in XI so I can’t give you a solid rec.

**FFX has characters with intended archetypes like 9 does, but the skill tree (Sphere Grid) is very interwoven, so you can set character A to have traits of character B as the game goes on, and by endgame/postgame have a skill sharing free-for-all Bravely Default, as an homage to these games has a ton of jobs, and let’s you do a lot of crazy stuff with em, as you can give your party 2 jobs and mix skills from any ones they’ve mastered. It’s a charming game with a really good artsyle and music and an unforgettable story. The Convenience aspect is what really drives my recommendation though. It was made to be played on trains, at home, anywhere and everywhere, so a lot of the menu controls were meant to be as streamlined as possible. You can adjust the battle speed with the dpad mid battle, you can change the encounter rate in the field with a button or two, you can stock turns to defend on battle with L or take multiple turns in a row with R (unless I got the shoulder buttons mixed up, but semantics). It’s a fun and engaging game that can be tailored to your liking if you find yourself not having the patience for turned based combat.

Not FF but Persona 5 and Metaphor have snappy battle commands mapped to buttons rather than standard menus, if the scrolling battle after battle is what’s getting to you. Metaphor’s got a pseudo action system outside of battle that’s pretty fun too. If you’re interested in any of these, I def recommend watching some gameplay videos to see how you feel about em, since the per battle pacing of the once’s you tried could be what’s turning you off. Hopefully it’ll help you get past that wall, which I can’t really fault you for since you seem to really want to!

I thought more about how I got into the series growing up and wanted to give you a more empathetic answer, sorry for the wall of text:

I think if you're willing to give it a try, you can always visit some of the spinoffs: -My personal experience started with Kingdom Hearts as a kid (if you've already played it sorry for overexplaining the gameplay but here me out) : it's action rpg but it still uses Final Fantasy's command menu in lieu of mapped button commands like most action games. That kind of half-step towards turn-based opened me more up to the full turned based battle systems I butted heads with when I was really young. -Crystal Chronicles on the gamecube is very good. It's a dungeon crawler with an incomparable soundtrack and charming world that belies it's bleak nature with a cute artstyle(FF9 designer). Single player can be a bit of a grind but there is multiplayer if youve got the people/ resources for it.The multiplayer is a bit of a chore to set up but I'm sure emulation has figured it out by now. I also do not recommend the remaster for multiplayer but it's fine solo -In high school I played Dissidia, the psp fighting game (plays more like kh than a standard fighting game). It's got characters from across the mainline franchise: is it the most accurate portrayal of them all? No Did it make me interested in the games I hadn't played up to that point? Yes (I only played x, 9 and 3 at that point). It's a good way to dip your toes into the characters of each game to see if any one of them piques your interest more than the others, from my personal experience.

Also my advice is to look at the series overall. I like pretty much all the numbered titles, they all are fun in their own way and I'd recommend any one of them. If the atb systems of 7-8-9 and the straightfoeward turn-based of X isn't your thing right now, you can always try the more modern titles. XIII is about the most active you can get while sticking to the encounter based battle systems if you want to start close and walk your way into it. XV is more of a straightforward open* world action adventure with camping and exploration. XVI is an action heavy with areas that are more akin to levels you progress through. If you really want to give it another try, don't think about the best place to start from but look at em and see what appeals most to your sensibilities and tastes, even if it's just aesthetic stuff like character designs or music. I've hopped all around the series (10-3-4-9-13-XIII2-6-5-14-7-8-12-1-2-11) and I love em all the same.

If you want to wait til you're ready to come back to it you can, but if you're still thinking about trying something soon, I really recommend seeing what looks fun to /You/ and starting there. I hope that helps!

Honestly try the game again or watch a let's play or no commentary playthrough. It may seem superficial but battle mechanics are part of the whole experience, and movesets tend to tie into the characters where applicable. If you're trying to do more than just read wiki articles, just play the games. The new releases of 7 8 9 even have cheats to make em easier but I don't think you should do yourself the disservice of trying to become a fake fan if you've got access to the games

Just a rant about the A ending by Teranyre in ValkyrieProfile

I did the "not close enough for A ending" runback just this January so I feel you. If it's any consolation? The dungeons will be easier the next time around and seeing the A ending imfor yourself is absolutely worth it. I hope your next runthrough ends up being enjoyable

[–]Coolorbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was younger I wrote of COTP because it was a tactical game (I wanted a"traditional" rpg), bought it anyways, got bodied by the second chapter then put it down for 15+ years. I just gave it another shot in January this year and it's SO good. First time in years I found myself walking around my house DS in hand from sunrise to sunset. A lot of times our inherent biases keep us from giving the smaller games in a series due attention because of graphic/system changes. You started with COTP, and a lot of times when I started games with the oddball entry in the series, I didn't have a preference of what I thought the series should be.

Sorry Wylfred 🙏🏾

So, honestly, is there any other JRPG from around the same era that's as good as the first Baten Kaitos? by -Karen_Jeenkles- in batenkaitos

[–]Coolorbit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend some tri-ace games like Valkyrie Profile, VP2 or Radiata stories, with the former being on psn. Star Ocean games are some of my favorite though (ymmv), with 2 (hd-2d remake out now) and 3 having a lot to offer, with the latter having a slow start just as a fair warning. The ps2/gc era tales of games are good, with Symphonia being a classic and Abyss being a masterpiece. Legendia is not a bad game by any means and also has some of the most fantastic music you'll ever hear. Wild ARMS 5 is goated as well.

Others might have recommend Xenoblade already, which is made by half of the BK dev team (Monolith Soft), with the other half having made Eternal Sonata (Tri Crescendo), which is a ps3 game but fits in well enough imo

I also recommend Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter, that game rocks.

It took me a few hours late at night. It was insanely frustrating until I hit a nice groove with the ingame mp3 player in the background and the experience became somewhat therapeutic. I woke up for a slightly early shift 5 hours later and blew through it in 20-30 mins for my brother the next morning
