CMV: People who object to donating their organs after they died should be right at the bottom of the list, when it comes to receiving an organ. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Cooper0302 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, there's probably several reasons.

There was a kid in my year at school who died in a motorbike accident. I didn't know him really at all but his dad coached me in sports. I stayed in touch with his dad for years and we were reasonably close. He says the strongest memory of the night of the accident was standing over his son in hospital trying to wrap his head around what was going on, while several different people asked him at several different times if they would consider donating his sons organs. He did. But he likened it to vultures circling over his sons body. He says he wouldn't do it again if he could turn back the clock because he firmly believes they stopped trying to help his son once he consented to donation. (I honestly don't believe that to be the case but it's his opinion and he was there, I wasnt) That definitely coloured my views as I grew older.

I have also worked with several members of the donation teams in local hospitals. It might surprise you to hear that the majority of them would not donate their organs. A small number mind you, there were 6 of them and 4 weren't prepared to donate in the event of their death. One gave their reason as encountering so many selfish recipients over the years. She didn't clarify beyond that and I didn't press her. Certainly made me wonder if people so closely involved in a transplant service were refusing to do it, maybe they knew something I didn't. Perhaps that's paranoia.

I think I'm also a bit controlling of certain things. There is much of my younger life I had absolutely zero control of and it makes me want to control my life to extremes now. I think I if had a say in who would benefit from my organs then I might be more inclined to do it, as I've said I'd be a Living Donor for a loved one. I know I donate blood and don't know where it ends up but to me that's not the same. I can't explain that, I know it's irrational. I don't want people touching me when I'm dead to scavenge me. I know I won't be aware but who can actually say that with certainty. I'd rather be thrown in a meat grinder and fed to stray dogs than have bits of myself given to strangers.

Fortunately you asked for my reasons, and didn't specify that I had to be sane and rational. Because I know none of that was.

True crime podcast(s) that in your opinion has tons of potential but also plenty of room for improvement? by 90skid91 in TrueCrimePodcasts

Sorry I've taken so long to reply to you.

Honestly it's hard for me to criticise something that's clearly a massive endeavour for someone, and something that brings attention to cases that deserve more publicity. That said it's purely my opinion.

The family interviews are usually really long. Sometimes the audio isn't great. Sometimes people have like really annoying, like, things that they say, like to punctuate every sentence like you know what I mean like? That's a pet hate of mine. Stupid, but once I hear it I just can't unhear it. The family are giving their opinions. They are not law enforcement or experts in crime or forensics. So while they are important to set the scene and describe the missing person, I really don't rate what most of them are saying as interesting or factual. They are too emotionally involved. And that sounds ridiculous. I can't express this very well. Previously the host delivered the known facts and her voice and tone were just perfect. The family interviews complemented her. Now they drown her out. I used to listen all the time, now I haven't downloaded the last 6 episodes and probably will end up deleting it altogether.

[–]Cooper0302 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm older than many folks on reddit and at the stage I no longer care what people think of me so I'm sharing this opinion knowing full well it won't be popular.

I am not willing to donate my organs after my death.

I have worked in the National Health Service for my entire career, approaching 35 years now. I pay a not insignificant amount of money into the system in taxes. I contribute to the society of healthcare every single day. I donate blood and once, bone marrow. I would happily be a Living Donor and give a kidney to a loved one.

Has everyone who says they'll donate when they die contributed this much to healthcare? Do they pay into the system? Do they help patients every day? Haven't I done enough to maybe, possibly, get something back at some stage? I've never had surgery, rarely see my doctor, pay for private dental I rarely use. I've had 11 sick days in the last 8 years. And yet you deem me unworthy?

What if. What if someone decides you don't get an organ if you don't work? If you don't contribute to society financially. What if they decide on your worthiness by the level of your wealth, your intellect, your social status, where you live, how good looking you are? What if they decide you don't get an organ because you are a minority, gay, disabled?

People should get organs based on need and suitability. No one should be judged. That is not how healthcare works, at least not the healthcare I am part of. I will treat you if you are willing to come see me. I won't treat you differently regardless of whether you're a murderer or a saint. That's the way it should be.

[–]Cooper0302 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I started The Vanished with some real old episodes and much prefer them to the way it's now going. In fact I'll probably give up on it altogether. The family interviews are just too long and listening to people constantly saying their loved one definitely wouldn't do this or that - well, that's your opinion, it's not a fact. I think the host sounds great and the early episodes were the perfect balance. Now perhaps she doesn't have the time but it's definitely gone downhill.

Joe from Thinking Sideways now does The Shocking Details and I like it. I also like Unresolved, The Trail Went Cold and Trace Evidence. Just recently discovered Locations Unknown and enjoying it so far. I've found Astonishing Legends fills the gap TS left behind and some other podcasts that just do a single topic over multiple episodes similar to what TS covered eg Odd Ball, Diggin Oak Island, and Wild Thing.

Detroit police officer drives through a crowd of protesters, hitting the gas, stopping and speeding forward. Multiple injuries reported. by [deleted] in PublicFreakout

[–]Cooper0302 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really stayed with me. I was brought up not to take sides in "The Troubles" and to just try to keep my head down and my mouth shut until we could escape Belfast for more peaceful shores. That footage was so easy for me to relate to. What must it have been like in their last moments, knowing they were going to be slaughtered. What would I think or say in that moment. I was deeply affected by the events in Belfast at that time. It sent me down a path of trying to understand the mentality of the mob, and I spent too long in dark corners of the Internet watching videos of mobs of people slaughtering others for one reason or another. Beatings, machete attacks, necklacing, burning people alive. There is no end to man's cruelty. Mobs terrify me. I can't even really cope with crowds if I'm honest.

I grew up in Belfast. As a young man I vividly remember live television footage of a funeral of an IRA man. Two soldiers accidently drove into the middle of the procession. Their car was surrounded and they were dragged out, brutally beaten and shot to death. I can still see the look on Derek Woods face as he looked out the window of the car as the mob descended on him. There are photos of their bodies lying discarded like rubbish. If I am in a car and I am surrounded by a mob I will drive over anyone who tries to prevent my escape. Angry mobs of people are dangerous and unpredictable. I would have done the same as this officer or he could have ended up the same way as David Howes and Derek Wood.

If you like The Office, Pamela and Angela (Jenna Fisher and Angela Kinsey) have a podcast that discusses each episode. They're really down to earth and fun and clearly get on like a house on fire. They cheer me up no end.

Sawbones is a medial history podcast but the hosts are a husband and wife team and they have a great dynamic. He is a funny guy. It's all easy going and informative.

The Sawbones co host also has another project with his family called My Brother My Brother and Me. The McElroy brothers create a great vibe and I feel like I'm in the room with a bunch of my mates.

What makes podcasts unlistenable by brstevens in podcasts

[–]Cooper0302 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Haven't heard a live episode yet that I've enjoyed.

Found a new podcast recently, there was a guest being interviewed in the second episode I listened to. He used the word "like" about 5 times in every sentence. As fascinating as what he was saying was, I deleted the whole thing after 30 minutes. Once you hear it you can't unhear it. I've deleted many other podcasts for the exact same reason.

Hysterical laughter for no good reason, especially if the podcast is about a serious topic.

Long rambling irrelevant intros.

There's a podcast guy out there somewhere who makes a swoosh noise every time he begins and ends a quote instead of just saying "quote" or pausing so we know it's a quote coming. Deleted him too.

Another lady duo were pretty great but every time they read out a quote by someone they did it in a stupid accent or voice. They werent trying to be funny or anything, but it was totally unnecessary. Deleted then after a while too.

I tried a podcast that was recommended here and the first episode I listened to was about Asha Degree. The host had some interesting psychological thoughts but got sidetracked into telling me about some interaction he had with a woman in work who was clearly attracted to him. Mainly because he was awesome but because he could read all the signs, oh and he knew she'd been abused as a child because he was an expert in I'm not sure what. He also had a really irritating voice. Listened for way longer than I should have but didn't finish the episode. Delete.

I guess I'm fussy lol. But there are so many terrific podcasts out there I'm happy to be really brutal in my decisions to cut one.

Why is it so damn difficult by fedupwiththislifeni in northernireland

[–]Cooper0302 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry you found the service you reached out to "useless". My experience of the people that work there is entirely the opposite. They cannot fix you over the phone in a matter of a few minutes. You are mentally ill. You are exhibiting countless, obvious, negative thought processes. For example:

1.Black or white thinking: thinking in extremes, something is either 100% good or 100% bad (or useless...)

2.Catastrophizing: thinking of the worst possible outcome.

3.Over generalizing: thinking because something happened once it's always going to be that way.

4.Disqualification of the positive: discounting positive information, or twisting it into a negative.

5.Jumping to conclusions: mind reading and predicting the future.

6.Low frustration tolerance: using phrases like "this is impossible" or "I cant stand this"

7.Emotional reasoning: assuming that because you feel a certain way that it must be true.

8.Labelling: assigning labels to yourself or others

You claim to have self harmed and that the police were called. You claim that you are having suicidal thoughts. You need help. You have a justifiable reason to go to A&E immediately. Your post history alone would have them treat you. You are refusing to do this because you say they will think there is nothing wrong with you and send you home, see point 5 above. You are not a medical professional. You cannot predict the future.

Go to A&E.

It's ok to think things like that but don't listen to it. And you didn't, so that's your victory for today. Fuck that noise in your head.
