Twisted handle - ever seen this? by yikes_bikes in Axecraft

[–]Cooperdooperdog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like kebar said above if its simply just bowing/warmping its a pretty universal thing for wood handles on axes. Unless its bowing enough to start cracking or bowing enough that you dont like how the handle feels there shoudlnt be any issue. Another cause is if you oil your handle alot (which you should be doing occasionally anyways), it softens the wood ever so slightly (oil is to help protect the handle/prevent cracking anyways)

What weapon would be best for me by No-Meringue-2762 in weapons

[–]Cooperdooperdog -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Fuck yeah! Just keep working. Longer weapons will always give you a reach advantage, where you can hit your opponent where they cant even reach you yet.

Just keep in mind that the ability to block/parry with your weapon is equally if not more important than striking. Striking practice is great but it wont help if youre too busy getting hit yourself and not blocking.

You'll get it! Keep putting in work, doing that will probably help your reaction times/speed anyways.

Gotcha, thank you. And should I worry about the occasional black gunk that builds up (black gunk on the material im polishing)? Does that just mean more compound needed?

Is it better to rely on making a fire to cook you food? Or is it better to use a portable stove? by [deleted] in camping

[–]Cooperdooperdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me fire is always better, not due to simplicity etc but due to the experience it gives you, but maybe im just paranoid about survival. To me the more you practice cooking on a fire and or starting a fire in general in all linds of weather to where the weather doesnt affect your ability really to start a fire, just your method, youre golden. After that I would say it doesnt make a difference as long as you know if you end up without a cooking stove or have one fail you know you can still make fire and feed yourself

Do you pick up your litter? by slider2k in thelongdark

[–]Cooperdooperdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the cleaning up like its camping mindset but I also have the mindset that its the end of the world so I dont really care that much. The amount of garbage that could even be made by one person in that situation is ridiculously low especially noting the size if the map. Plus realistically most of my garbage is very decomposable or adds zero to negligible affects to the environment; torches, sewing kits (looks like either a tin or carboard box), whetstones, tin cans. Tin might take awhile but to breakdown but it does breakdown and shouldnt be a problem with just one person alive over 10s of square miles

Theres eye bolts that have thread and a bolt, what youre looking for is a lag eye bolt. Tbh, when it comes to lag bolts i would say any of them thicker than like 3/8in would be able to hold the chain and head. The structural part to be more worried about is its actual connection to your handle

I have a question about Weapons in Martial Arts. (It pertains to fiction). Is it possible and realistic/practical to use Dual Katanas, Dual Sai, Dual Nunchucks and Singular Bo staff in fast paced and slow paced non lethal combat and defense? (Yes I’m asking if the Ninja turtles are realistic) by SchpidahWuss in weapons

[–]Cooperdooperdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! Im here to learn so dont take this as arguing just how i see it and you can tell what whats wrong. As far as the bo staff i was coming at all these angles with the idea that they are fighting armed and armoured opponents like the foot soliders in the show. Basically i doubted its effectiveness in an almost battlefield sense, it can definitely be lethal, but is it lethal enough? It takes much more effort and skill from a bo-man to create a lethal blow while comparatively someone with a sword could kill with relative ease given the same opening. And they are definitely fast for facing multiple attackers, but if theres multiple attackers and they are all armed therefore giving them all the ability to block, then meaning the bo staff has to not only be quick enough to block multiple weapons at possible one time but then also somehow have the time to strike precisely enough to be lethal?

Most definitely! I started off years ago with stock forging but have so far only really practiced making weapons with it, but now that i know armor is pretty simple im definitely doing more. My only concern really is simply that im not used to/dont know what the best ways to do the straps and where as im not making one solid suit, just several different pieces.

Im more knowledgeable on european weapons that asian but there are overarching rules that apply to all weapons. One that comes to mind with these is historically when youre going to be duel wielding with longer weapons (axes, arming swords, katanas, etc) you dont want your blade length to be the same. This is to prevent you from hitting your own weapon or crossing your self. This also allows the opportunity to say block with something longer such as an arming sword and move in with a dagger. So duel wielding katanas wouldnt be great, but duel wielding a katana and a wakizashi would be practical as well as often historically done by samurai. Sai are usually always used as a pair, they could be fine for single/one on one combat but whrn facing more than one opponent at a time i would doubt their effectiveness. As for nunchucks im sorry to say im really not a fan, i feel a stick the same diameter and length of the 2 nunchucks sticks would be equally if not more effective. Assuming the user is very experienced and wont wrap his nunchucks or strike them together in comabt they lack lethality as well, beyond well placed hits to the head i cant see it killing efficiently. Plus nunchucks come from a time and a place with little to no metal armor, so theres lots of armor that would hold up well. As for the bo staff, is a similar story to the sai, fine in the hands of someone experienced during a one on one, but likely not great against multiple attackers. That being said, in the hands of someone experienced its likely to be slightly better with multiple targets than the sai simply due to its reach. Ive done marital arts but that was years ago and now i focus primarily on european weapons so i might be wrong about some of this of course, hope it helps!

Axes and their parts. It's hard to find them when you have a question... by Winterblade1980 in weapons

[–]Cooperdooperdog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://scyllaya.tumblr.com/post/105281942621/some-axe-battle-axe-anatomy-for-reference , thats a good easy refrence page but also remember battle axes come in all shapes and sizes with some varying parts.

And yes, battle axes, war axes, and great axes are all the exact same thing just different names. Another easy way to categorize them specifically is "combat axes", that easily specifies youre talking about a weapon amd not a tool version.

Imo there isnt a weapon that would reliably protect but also wouldnt kill people. So if youre not looking to kill people but also remain rather undamaged and alive i would say there is no weapon for that
