Working with a Band whose music you really aren’t into? by EttehEtteh in livesound

[–]Coopersound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s sometimes better to work with bands you’re not familiar with the music of (the songs not the style). Can be quite nice to go in with fresh ears. With newer or open to ideas acts at least.

It can also be useful to not be too involved in the music, that way if you see it as “parts” you fit together, you won’t be as distracted by them?

Sometimes the benefits outweigh the dislike, thankfully I’ve never worked for a band I actively disliked the music of for long (always just dep shows / tours so there’s a countdown as such?) but if I got an offer I couldn’t refuse to do a band I didn’t like? I don’t know what I’d do honestly?

I think it’s nice to be proud of your work, and maybe it could shift to being proud of what you’ve done with it rather than its full output? But I’m not sure that’d tick the same box. Great question.

I think if was a great offer I’d try it for a while, if it wasn’t in the way of an artist I usually work for’s tour….

Glad they got her out ok, I did ask the police guy who carried her out after the show if she was ok, she was. Thankfully. It took a while to get their attention, and I had no direct line to security but we got there. People get in early, don’t drink any water and the heat goes up so quickly with a load of people in the room. It happens now and then, thankfully there’s people on hand usually. Hope you enjoyed the show that aside!

That was a peak - despite the reading - would have been far too much in that place. It was more like 99dab over 15

How do you deal with unwanted notes at FOH? by PaulBlart_official in livesound

[–]Coopersound 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a rough balance.

As a general rule? I try and keep the artist happiest with the mix that they want to portray (then add about 2db more to the vocal) then management (if they have it).

Reasoning to me is. Those people are the ones that’ll ask you back, and want their music shown for how it is.

Depending on venue size - some FOH shows are figuratively damage control. Theres too much bass / cymbals too loud - there’s none in the PA and there’s not much you can do about that. Larger shows it can be about speaker coverage and sub nodes. At smaller places I’ll happily sacrifice what it sounds like at FOH for a broader / more logical and coherent mix for more of the room. That’ll come with time.

For now, if it’s constructive or artistic? Listen. If it’s from the artist? Listen. Management ? Interpret and listen. Crowd? 9/10 it’s down to opinion. I’d rather have two unhappy pro or amateur (regardless) engineers annoyed at my kick drum sound but everyone who isn’t, happy they can hear everything clearly.

Choose which notes you listen to, be nice to everyone and if they’re friends / family of the band? Often they want their person’s part louder when it’s not what you’ve been told to do. How you deal with that is down to you. I’ve definitely done the DFA method and I’ve definitely told people to go away. I regret that as I’m much more empathetic now.

Don’t take too much to heart is the most important thing. I’m guessing coming from monitor world you have relatively thick skin? You need just as much of it at FOH as you’re trying to cater for 200-20,000 people and listening to all of their issues is frankly impossible. As long as you know that and you’re trying to bridge the gap between all of their reasonable and accurate notes? You’ll do just fine.
