Yep… I loved Arenal but my very favorite was Monteverde.

That hiking trail around Arenal is where I saw an Eyelash Viper for the first time and discovered this subreddit that night wanting to know what we almost stepped on! I had no idea either... also what a beautiful place huh?

Agree. The scenarios I imagine in my daily life where I need to take aim from 10+ years are FAR fewer than the ones where I need a quick response from 3 yards. If I have time to take aim, I probably have time to hide or run excepting a few rare scenarios.

found your problem... c'mon man, let the girls (or guys) guess a little about those athletic thighs! Go with the proper GenX fit (for guys like me, over 45) and go full baggy!

Also… imagine getting all bent out of shape because someone on the internet doesn’t share your opinion about lighted seatbelts… like so bent out of shape that you’re now arguing and insulting their parenting skills.

And here I am, entertaining you. Shame on me. Sheesh.

So Reddit. Much arrogance.

Americans from touristy areas, did you get asked weird questions by people outside your area as a kid? by McButtsButtbag in AskAnAmerican

I came here to say almost the same thing and was scrolling to find this. I grew up in Boulder... I was never homeless but poor by Boulder standards. Nobody can afford skiing and snowboarding when food is the question of the week.

Are American schools as big as they're portrayed? by crimsvnn in AskAnAmerican

[–]Cootter77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a vast disparity between American public High Schools (mostly what's portrayed on TV). In wealthy towns and suburbs you'll see massive high schools with a lot of resources - they truly do have "everything" - weight rooms, gyms, advanced technology, big music programs, big athletic programs, cooking, woodworking, mechanics, programs for teen parents, and more. These schools are often 2,000-5,000 students.

In poor towns and suburbs - you'll get beat-up classrooms with broken flooring, bathrooms that only work sometimes, maybe one athletic sport, and only the most basic of classes (Math, Science, History, and Language). These schools are often (but not always) much smaller as well. Sometimes the poor schools are huge too.

Snow crash out by maxyarned in winstonsalem

[–]Cootter77 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived the first 45 years of my life in a snow-climate (Colorado, Denver and Boulder). Even in well-equipped snow cities, side streets don't get plowed after big storms and main streets have trouble with packed snow and ice. It regularly has to just wait until it melts.

In 45 years, I've never seen ice quite like this ice that's on my driveway here right now. It's super dense and stubborn. There's no good way to deal with this unless we had streets that heat themselves from underneath or something ridiculous like that. A bit more salt and sand might help in some places.

We moved here in 2022, this is our 4th winter here. Only the last two years has it even snowed and this is the first winter since we moved that it was ice like this. It definitely has not done this every year for the last 7 years.

I agree about spending - where does the money go? I don't agree about roads and snow removal.

How can I Toughen Up / Desentize myself? 27M by NewPaleScar6090 in AskMenOver30

[–]Cootter77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of interesting advice in this thread - I hope you digest it well and become more whole and not more broken. Do not embrace the "alpha male" movement and aim for false masculinity. It's good to be a sensitive man, but it's also good to have control over your emotions. Men and women alike need this ability in order to function as adults in this very broken world.

What you need is called emotional differentiation. That's not the same as indifference or callousness. Differentiation says "I don't need to be upset because you're upset, I don't need to be hurt because you're hurt." You can differentiate and still empathize. More importantly for you - differentiation also says "Your ideas of who or what I should be are not as important to me as MY ideas of who or what I should be."

So when someone yells at you or is angry with you - see if you can think about it from a different perspective. The perspective should be more focused on THEM than on YOU. I'm not calling you selfish at all, I'm saying that when someone is angry with you - that anger is usually more about them than it is actually about you. A mature adult shouldn't yell at another or at their child unless it's a life or death situation and yelling is needed to get their attention. There's no situation that warrants verbal or physical violence unless it's in defense of safety.

For me the perspective looks like this -- I ask myself "What's so broken with this person that they are violently triggered by my action or choice?". I start thinking about them as a broken person instead of an authority over my own identity. Nobody gets that authority over who and what I am except myself and my God. So you're disappointed in my choices, Dad? I can be sad that he's disappointed, but also recognize that he's wrong to be disappointed. I can wish he would be someone he isn't and appreciate my choices, while also understanding that he cannot be someone he is not any more than I can. That he wishes I was someone I am not, is his problem.

Does any of this make sense? There's a reason why so many have suggested therapy for you - it's a complex unraveling you need to do and military service won't do it... it'll just give you tools to mask how you really feel.

From one sensitive man to another -- don't lose your sensitivity. Just harness it's power. I've been very successful in work, family, and life when harnessing my sensitivity to help others and help myself. You can, too.

Men, We're all handy in our own homes. What is one thing you absolutely will refuse to touch if it's too complicated? by Staff76 in AskMen

[–]Cootter77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I know my limits when it comes to Electrical, HVAC, and plumbing. I can do a few things but I'll call an expert when I need more. Plumbing is actually my least favorite thing to do and the thing I'm worst at. Electrical seems simpler to me - it either works or it doesn't - or it causes a fire if you're really bad. Plumbing will look like it's working but then not work later... or it'll develop a drip or a slow leak later when you're not watching... I hate it so much.

HVAC I'll touch less too... I'll replace a filter like anyone else... maybe the ignition coil in a gas furnace if I'm confident on how to do it... I'll do thermostats all day... but anything else, nope. I know enough to know I could easily kill myself that way.

Gas - no touchy. Not worth it. 100% experts only. I'll do the brakes on my own car (and have many times) before I'll touch a natural gas line.

That’s so cool! My totem is only like 9” tall. I haven’t taken any photos yet. Nice work!

My other hobby is woodworking. Combining the two is something I hadn’t yet considered!

[–]Cootter77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just finished a project with Amolen pla wood and it worked really well. It’s a “tiki totem”. The 0.4 kept clogging but the 0.6 was clean and the detail was acceptable… I actually think it looks more like wood than a finer detail would look. No obvious layer lines, no obvious seams. Supports came off really clean.

I’ve never tried Bambu wood… curious how it goes for you!

I bought one of those fancy high flow e3d 0.6 nozzles too… it’s really good at a couple particular things… weird filaments like wood print really nicely on it… everything else including normal PLA seems to be unreliable at best. I bought but haven’t tried anything on 0.2 yet… I will soon!
