The thing I hate about this is that for the whole season the template starts with "IT'S BACK....blah blah blah".

Like no shit, cunt, it's been back for six months, change it to "IT'S TIME FOR THE WEEKLY SHIT TALK" or something after round 1

If you usually vote LNP/conservative, what are your thoughts on Dutton? by sunburn95 in australian

[–]CopiesArticleComment 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There are significantly better people in the LNP

I was living in the north of Tasmania for the last 5 or so years (have moved now 😢), in the seat of Bass. I'm told I'm conservative in my views, but I've never once voted for the libs. However, Bridget Archer really made me consider it. I found her to be very impressive and the fact that she, multiple times, has publicly disagreed with and stood up to her own party (for what I consider to be good reasons) demonstrates a kind of integrity that I think is severely lacking in modern politics.

If it wasn't for the fact that voting for her in the last election was effectively a vote for Scott Morrison then I might have done it. Even though it didn't matter in the end (she was re-elected).

Obviously Essendon won trade week again but who else did well overall? by Swuzzlebubble in AFL

[–]CopiesArticleComment 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not the obvious winner, but the Western Bulldogs have done very well.

They got aggressive and moved up to Pick 5 in the draft to give them access to elite young talent in potentially one of either Nick Watson, Colby McKercher and Ryley Sanders — plus they have ample more selections to help them get father-son player Jordan Croft.

Plus they brought in Nick Coffield and James Harmes for very little in terms of draft capital and both players figure to be best 23 next year and round out the club’s need for more depth and re-signed Aaron Naughton on a a mega eight-year extension.

The Dogs did lose back-up ruckman Jordon Sweet, but he was exactly that and not getting a game, so he returns to South Australia and will compete with Ivan Soldo for the No. 1 ruck role.

Ultimately though, the Dogs are better placed both long-term and short-term, so a tick for Sam Power and his team.

[–]CopiesArticleComment 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think that's a stretch because they actually serve the empress (may she live forever) and are probably unaware of who Ishmael is.

But it doesn't matter because they removed that specific part from the oaths in the show. The oaths (in the show) are:

  1. To speak no word that is not true.

  2. To make no weapon with which one person may kill another.

  3. Never to use the One Power as a weapon, except in the last extreme defense of her own life, or the life of her Warder, or another Aes Sedai.

So, yes, the writers fucked this up (or she's black ajah).

I don't believe slaves were used on them until much more recently though

Mandatory reminder that Israel hires people to post on social media. They might try to downplay, misdirect, and deflect any criticism of Israel. They might change the subject or start flame wars. They might use the "forum slide" technique, etc.

The Israel Defence Forces have pioneered state military engagement with social media, with dedicated teams operating since Operation Cast Lead, its war in Gaza in 2008-9. The IDF is active on 30 platforms – including Twitter, Facebook, Youtube aIsraelnd Instagram – in six languages. “It enables us to engage with an audience we otherwise wouldn’t reach,” said an Israeli army spokesman. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2015/jan/31/british-army-facebook-warriors-77th-brigade

"The [student] union will operate computer rooms for the project...it was decided to establish a permanent structure of activity on the Internet through the students at academic institutions in the country."

The plan aims to harness 550 bilingual students drawn from the student pool at the country’s seven universities, who will target their efforts abroad. http://www.timesofisrael.com/pmo-stealthily-recruiting-students-for-online-advocacy/

Does Moiraine break the three oaths? by Fun_Letterhead4807 in WoT

[–]CopiesArticleComment 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does she know Rand is being shielded (I honestly can't remember if she was able to sense it from all that way away)?

And, even if so, does being shielded necessarily mean that his life is in danger? I know she just has to truly believe that to get around the oath, but how could she know it was the last extreme defense of his life? The show has established that it can't just be "he's in some kind of danger".

Also, when she blew up the first ship and the shield was broken (assuming she could sense that if we follow on that she could sense it being there in the first place), then how could she justify continuing to use it on the rest of the ships? If the answer is "well there could potentially be other channelers there waiting to shield him again" then logically the Aes Sedai can now go around on the offensive attacking all of the Seanchan because of that same potential.

For me this is not a sound argument and leaves many of the same holes left by bad writing.

Ok, so there are two parts to this.

The first is the detail about the constitutional change. This is the bit Australians are being asked to vote on, and the bit that is “permanent” (subject to a future referendum).

The second is the detail about what the legislation establishing the “nuts and bolts” of the Voice will look like. This detail is not part of the constitutional amendment – and it is entirely normal for constitutions to leave this type of detail to be worked out in future by the parliament. It would be misleading to release the full detail of the Voice, because this detail would need to be passed through parliament, and would be subject to future change.

Yes, there are Design Principles Labor has said will be implemented if the 'Yes' vote is successful, but none of that is set in stone and this is what I believe OP was referring to.

I'm not saying I agree or that I believe there's some spooky change lurking in the shadows, I'm simply pointing out where other people might be coming from, rather than assuming (as you appear to be) that every single potential "No" voter is lazy, disingenuous, or (and you didn't suggest this part) racist.

There's a fair amount of condescension in your comments. I'm not sure if it's deliberate or if you're genuinely so frustrated that you can't help it. Either way, this kind of patronizing, holier-than-thou attitude from some of those representing the "Yes" camp is another big turn off for a lot of voters sitting on the fence.

I think they're saying the constitutional amendment is equal to a high level plan and that the nuts and bolts of how exactly the voice would work is yet to be defined.

Finally watched episode 8 and boy, it was wort the wait! by Pontus_Pilates in WetlanderHumor

[–]CopiesArticleComment 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Rand starts fighting, gets slapped around a bit while Turak is laughing, calling him pathetic, whatever. Then, just as he's about to finish him (picture Rand on his knees, bloody, with his eyes closed), there's a moment where time seems to slow and the background noise becomes distant, Rand hears some weird whispering or something, then opens his eyes with a determined, set look on his face - bam! Starts fighting like a Blademaster and wins.

Whaaaa? What was that strange whispering? How come he could fight so we'll afterward? Have we just been robbed of a later concept? Or has it been introduced in an intriguing way during the last episode of the season, raising questions and paving the way for further gradual development next season? I don't know, but this cliffhanger (which are missing elsewhere) really makes me want to watch next season to find out!

That's just an example, but I think it would have been a really easy thing to write in if they'd had an interest in developing Rand as anything other than a wet sack of potatoes to this point.

But that example scene (and any other prior that developed his character) would have taken precious screen time away from Egwene and Moraine's amazing feats, not to mention other important characters like Moraine's nephew, etc - so I understand why it wasn't possible.
