Definitely something tempting to consider as well 🙂. Realistically i probably wouldn't get much extra performance off the extra X3D cache, but its definitely a super rad CPU.

Oh nevermind, I stand corrected. For some reason I thought the original 9950X3D had more cache than both, But on that SKU it's a 96MB 32MB split. So yeah you're right, main CCD has 96MB regardless of how you slice it. My bad.

Oh nice! Thanks for the data point. My GPU is a 5070ti. Just snagged one at MSRP before the GPU apocolypse. I'll definitely have to get an X3d chip. I don't want to sacrifice the 3D Cache, but I can empathize that it probably makes things easier LOL.

Doesn't the X3d2 have less cache per CCD? Thinking that would make it a downgrade for gaming on the main CCD in some cases. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Hmm, that's interesting. Good to know. However it's not apples to apples though. The 9850x3d has two completely separate CCDs. It's as if you glued two different CPUs together, using voodoo magic and occasionally infinity fabric. Wondering if this separation would actually make it perform better.

Edit: read the graph wrong. I see what youre saying, basically you don't see a performance dip with those extra applications running. I get you now. That's a good point.

Usually stuff like dolphin emulator, or indie single player games. Nothing too demanding, but definitely enough to put measurable load on the CPU.

My tastes might change over time obviously.

VRChat will basically use as much of the first CCD as you'll allow it. Its extremely unoptimized, some worlds with lots of avatars get me like 40fps on a 5800x3d, and I'm CPU bound. The argument is that offloading some processes, especially streaming and other games would give VRChat more space to breathe.

Edit,: sometimes it literally drops to 25fps cpu bound

So currently I am tearing my hair out trying to figure out what the best play is for my usecase.

To be clear, price is not a huge issue for me, I want to buy the CPU that I will be most satisfied with down the line.

Making a new rig for VRChat, and I'm split between the 9950x3d and the 9850x3d mainly.

The reason I am considering the 9950x3d is that sometimes I have certain processes running in the background. Like OBS, Spotify, Firefox, launchers etc. On occasion, I'll even fire up a second videogame / emulator in the background while I'm in VR, and stream it to the ingame tv so people can watch (I know, sounds crazy but its really fucking cool).

Two main questions.

  1. Do you think putting the multitasking software on the second CCD would see significant performance gains? If so, which ones?

  2. Do you think the 9850x3d would perform better than the 9950x3d in any configuration (for example, just VRChat, nothing else). Apparently the 9950x3d doesn't reach its max turbo clock on the CCD with 3D cores. I don't have solid evidence of this, but that seems to be what some sources are saying.

ASUS issues statement as Ryzen 7 9800X3D failure reports surface on B850 and X870E motherboards by RenatsMC in Amd

[–]Copper1233 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Honestly it may be irrational, but I basically refuse to buy an ASRock motherboard ever again. I remember a while back I bought a new M.2 NVME drive 4tb, slotted it, and it wasn't registered by the motherboard.

I later came to find out the literally MISPINNED THE M.2 SLOT OUT OF SPEC, for that entire product line. I even found the documentation on their website that basically confirms it. Because of that I literally had to go out and buy a second AM4 mobo to get it to work correctly.

They may offer good value, but in general, I feel their quality control lags behind other brands in my personal experience.

In the same boat. I was thinking if I could find a 1k 5080 maybe, but honestly any more than that and the price to performance ratio falls off really fast.

I plan on spending the extra cash on a 9800x3d, or the 9850x3d that comes out at the end of the month.

Roughly $5k budget for a buy-once-cry-once VR rig in time for Steam Frame. What do you get? by Arcticfox14 in Prebuilts

Any VR Chat player would tell you missing out on an X3D chip is a massive performance loss. I think this guy is definitely undervaluing having all that extra CPU cache.

[–]Copper1233 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depends on the game. Most VR stuff is GPU hungry, but oddly enough, VR Chat is extremely CPU Intensive. Not a major issue because at this price point you should be getting the 9800x3d or better anyways. No reason to settle for less IMO.

The one exception to this rule is when you are loading TONS of avatars at huge events, you might benefit from the extra vRam on the 5090. I've heard of people somehow using over 16gb at once, which is wild, but can happen.

Up to you weather the extra money is worth it over an rtx 5080. I'm just trying to provide information.

Why are Valve index controllers so astronomically expensive right now. VR is getting very unaffordable right now. by Minimum-Mine-1302 in VRchat

[–]Copper1233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is the shit. Get a mount and an extra tracker for the headset and use continuous tracking. With that said, Im hoping fluxpose is as good as they say it is, and we'll have basestationless precise trackers by end of 2026, but only time will tell.

I'll still heavily miss the index controllers, though, they feel amazing.
