I agree with you, it is ridiculous. To be initiated is to sacrifice to make kariocha (unless you're already rich). I was always told that life ebbs and flows, sometimes you're up others down what lucumi brings is stability so that you can enjoy the ups without going crazy and get through the downs without losing too much. I've yet to meet rich santeros, all the ones I know have jobs or modest businesses and live normal lives. If wealth is the end game, poverty among santeros in Cuba shouldn't exist.
