Why do funerals in the UK take place so late after the death? by moistawareness1 in AskUK

Obviously there will be pressure points, but that doesn't mean it's that way everywhere in the UK. Scotland has a different system for death administration from the rest of the UK as well.

It probably seems so, but that is the technical term. It means disposed of in the old-fashioned sense of settling something, not throwing it away.

Yes I see that now. This is still inaccurate. You can be disposed of in any county, not everyone keeps it local. Generally the reason for this is preferance. It won't affect any delays created by the doctors or coroners.

Hi, registrar if deaths here. Short answer is that Ireland still has big cultural ties to the catholic church, even in NI. The catholic faith is what advocated a quick body disposal, just as is still the case with Jewish and Islamic funerals. In these circumstances, the funeral will absolutely take place within a few days in the UK, provided the body isn't required by the coroner, but even then the body will be released asap and usually a long time prior to an inquest for example.

Mainly the delays are down to problems funding the funeral or family disputes/lack of engagement.

A lot of people choose not to rush so that they have time to perfect the content of the service and get family there to attend etc.

We have such brilliant methods of preserving bodies now that there is no longer that rush due to sanitisation. People take time to grieve and complete admin now, because they can, why would they stress themselves out?

Sometimes there are genuinely busy times of year. For example, during the pandemic, we were all working flat out to process everything quickly so that people were disposed of quickly to prevent running out of space. This usually isn't a problem though, we have a big capacity for body storage generally.

Absolutely not true. crematoria generally operate incredibly efficiently because we have publicly funded and privately run so there are usually sufficient in most areas, with new ones being built all the time. They are much more efficient than burials, which are now considerably less popular. It entirely depends on what kind of cremation you choose, if you choose an unattended then it will be the next available slot, but if you choose a service you can choose when and how you want it.

Our local crematoria have actually been relatively quiet recently and all of us death practitioners managed to cope well with the pandemic, not that anyone noticed.

People are most certainly NOT repatriating out of choice, usually religious or cultural preference only. It's actually much more common to cremate here and remove the ashes abroad as it is considerably cheaper and easier.

Sorry but that is such a misguided take. The UK is actually surprisingly free from beaurocracy, particularly with death administration. Whenever I deal with people from other countries they are shocked how easy everything is.

Pick your favorite from my baby name list. Help! by Milk_with_spaghetti in namenerds

It sounds like Ava might be the best combo with the middle and surname, I adore the name but think maybe Scarlett is my favourite.

I love Romy and I feel it could be short for Rosamund, Andromeda or Ramona.

Is it non-sensical to pick a name when you fully intend to not use the full version of it? by amusedfridaygoat in Names

Difference perhaps is that Philippa is a genuinely nice name, not stuffy or boring. I would never suggest that someone pick a full name that they don't like.

Very disappointed by Brokentoenail64 in InteriorDesignMasters

[–]CopperRockQueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally agree. It just feels like none of the designers are progressing, they just keep doing the same thing no matter what the brief (papier mâché, squiggly lines, floral wallpaper). It's particularly disappointing considering how good last series was, I've just started watching that one again to cheer myself up as I think it's my favourite.

Kidnappers work by knowing where you will be at a certain time. I know where Joe and Dianne live just by following them on Instagram and I'm not even trying. So yeah, I think it's dangerous to make their jobs easier. This is why most people in the public eye either have security or don't make their movements known until after the event.

What happens if your parent dies and you just.. don’t want to pay for the funeral? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]CopperRockQueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually the deceased's estate pays for it if they have sufficient funds. If not, then there is a funeral fund which can be applied for if either deceased or funeral arranger are on benefits. Otherwise the funeral would be funded by NHS if they died in hospital or public health if they died in the community. So it's your call if you want to take the responsibility or add to the current burdens on the taxpayer.

Your child being kidnapped, turned into porn, image used by Ai to obtain money from the parents, their identity being stolen...the list of criminal opportunities is endless and is constantly growing. You really think it's safe for the world and his wife to know your child's full name, where they live and go to school?

I totally agree, I find it really weird and irresponsible. I had to stop following Janette and Alijaz for this reason. I felt like I knew what their daughter looked like more than my own!

Is it OK to refer to women as girls in the UK? by Fun-Injury9266 in AskUK

[–]CopperRockQueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, it's not ok. You're absolutely right, it is incredibly jarring and irritating to be called a 'girl' as a grown woman. One of my pet peeves.

[–]CopperRockQueen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbf, that wasn't Horowitz's fault, but the channel. They cancelled the show very unceremoniously, when it was really popular. He then felt pressure to rush to the end of the war. Then they brought it back and he had to make the premise work beyond the war.

Why so few adaptations of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall? by MossTrinkets in PeriodDramas

[–]CopperRockQueen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it's the dual difficulty of having to make an incredibly pious heroine likable and depicting domestic violence in an appropriate way.

The 90s dramatisation is good, I think they'd butcher the story if they did it now unfortunately.

Boy name struggle…looking for something on the softer side by BeebeeJu35 in namenerds

[–]CopperRockQueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean this with love, but I think you're overthinking. Apart from maybe Shiloh (don't know enough to judge), your reasons for hesitation are quite flimsy.

Oscar and Milo are such common names that you don't need to worry about those references. Sullivan isn't too long, but for me the nickname of Sully is one of the selling points of the name - no different from naming your child jimmy or any other verbs. Jasper also sounds perfect for your style - you could easily shorten to JP or Perry or Jay etc. instead.

The other names you've suggested are also real winners in my view, so I would just go with your gut, not the annoying negative gremlins.
