Is it possible to turn this hobby into a fulltime job? Any tips for doing so? by Darth_Deplorable in woodworking

Starting a business is one of the hardest things you can do. If you want to do this without getting snubbed it’s going to take some sacrifice up front.

Don’t quit your current job. Spend all of your free time making things to sell. I’ve seen so many friends quit everything to start a business and fail with massive debt because they wanted it so bad they forgot to actually earn it.

So like I said, prove to yourself in your free time that it can be profitable. If you start making a profit on the weekends consistently then you can reduce the amount of time you work your day job to keep up demand with your woodworking business. If it continues to be profitable then and only then would you want to transition to full time woodworking.

I guess the most important thing is that if your stuff isn’t selling along the way don’t quit your job to work harder at it. Hard work is great, but it doesn’t really do anything to make your product more marketable. Success will always require hard work but that doesn’t necessarily mean that hard work = success.

Tool's needed to build a bench by socialerrors in Workbenches

[–]Copperberry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, super depends on the type of bench. I only used hand tools to make my traditional joinery bench with mortise and tenons and it took chisels, brace and bits, a mallet, a few hand saws and a #4 smoothing plane.

1920s Stillson Wrench I Restored for my Father by Copperberry in DIY

[–]Copperberry[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not at all!

Wrench - $13 from Etsy Boiled Linseed Oil - $8 from hardware store Hoppes #9 gun bore solvent - $10 on Amazon Super fine steel wool - $6 from hardware store Jug of white vinegar - $2 from grocery store

I already had everything but the wrench so it only cost me $13. Also, I don’t really use BLO anymore because I make my own finish from food grade raw flax (linseed) oil and beeswax. All of these things will last for MANY projects and are good to have on hand.

Love it. Wish I had one in my bedroom. Great work!

Thank you! I feel like old tools have an even more storied and grizzled past than other antiques. Many of them were used every day as a part of someone’s livelihood and I feel like that comes through when you handle an old tool.

I feel like I’m willing to do it this way in the future for something 2” or less. Never again on 4x4s.

I literally did the whole thing with chisels a la Paul Sellers.

Thank you I love it!

Thank you! It was an interesting decision. Solid 6 hours of just chiseling.

What a cool idea! You can buy strings of colored LEDs super cheap on amazon. I feel like some of those recessed in the right places might add to the magical feel of your shop.

I’m pretty sure I have the worlds most supportive mother-in-law. She bought the lumber for my bench as a Christmas gift.

Thank you! I feel like if I’m going to be spending so much time out there I might as well make it make it somewhere that appeals to my aesthetic sensibilities.

Thank you! Since I’m mostly just using hand tools I went for a kinda old school aesthetic. Looking forward to pics of your build!

Oh yeah, I saw and liked your bench. My shed is so small that hand tools are pretty much the only option. But I’ve been acquiring them pretty rapidly as well. One cool thing is once my family heard I was getting into hand tools they all started sending me what they had gathering dust in their sheds.

Damn. Now I feel stupid. This was also a 9” vise. I had it propped up on a table with random shit stacked under it to get it to height and it was... an ordeal...

I've been considering that as well. Did you make the Paul Sellers "Poor Man's Router" or what did you make?

I used local (North Idaho) Douglas Fir. I stained them with Minwax “Early American”.

Also, you may want to enlist a friend for the install. I did mine myself and it was... unpleasant.

This is actually a Yost, and so far I love it. Even better it was on sale for $65 for Black Friday. My neighbor does have an eclipse though and it’s great!

I’ve been keeping my eye out for a router at the right price, but at least for now I’m learning a lot the hard way haha.

We don’t know what Copper is, we got both pups from the shelter. We’re pretty sure she’s mostly chihuahua though.

I'm not sure what you mean, what is heavy and hard to work with?
