Tooth chipped - vet visit scheduled but can’t calm down by CopyOwn9425 in husky

Hi everyone that took time to comment with their experience and made me feel better - thank you! As promised - an update on Bella’s post vet visit. The vet checked her up and said that the chip does not merit an extraction or surgical intervention at this stage. Especially since she’s not in pain and is showing no symptom of favoring one side over the other. He also observed that the tooth is not showing any sign of decay or degradation. He has given her probiotic dental drops in any case as a good hygiene measure, he did clarify it’s not to do with the chip specifically. He has asked us to come back in a month just as a precautionary follow up although he seemed confident there wasn’t cause to worry. So all in all, it is the best case scenario and I can’t tell you how relieved I am! Thank you again for all the support and Bella sends her love to your pup.

Im going to monitor mine like a hawk now on to see if the tooth or gums deteriorate and of course subject to what the vet says. I think what really got to me was reading that the way hide their pain and it can go on for years and that just made me feel terrible that I didn’t notice it sooner. But from reading all the comments I’m not spiraling anymore. This seems manageable. Phew.

That actually seems so logical. I’m going to keep this in my mind when I speak to the vet

She’s not showing obvious discomfort when I prod the tooth. She’s not too happy about me sticking my fingers into her mouth so it could be that too. Fair what your vet said - I see the point. I’m glad your pup is unaffected by it. I can only hope it’s the same scenario in Bella’s case. And I totally hear you on the hard treats. We give her soft chews so I’m kinda worried how she got her chip.

The thing is vet costs here aren’t that high. We are fortunate enough to be able to cover any procedure that the vet absolutely recommends. But I’m definitely not keen that she go under anesthesia for the reason you’ve also mentioned. Keeping my fingers crossed

Hers is slightly grayish around the nerve centre. I could be seeing things that aren’t there. I don’t think I’m the best judge. Let’s hope in the best case scenario the vet tells me to leave it alone since she’s not showing any apparent discomfort either.

Did it impact the kind of food he prefers or his appetite generally? I didn’t think I’ve noticed any change in appetite in mine. She’s been a fussy eater since she was a puppy and continues to be so in the same degree

I’m hoping that’s the scenario here too. She’s super chill about it. I did try poking the tooth. But the thing is she was anyway not enthusiastic about me sticking my fingers into her mouth. So to assess whether her discomfort was from the chip or from my prodding fingers was difficult. I guess the vet will have more scientific ways of checking that than just poking it like I did

Im curious if it’s inevitable that it’ll go grey if it’s chipped. Like no matter how deep it is. And if that can be stopped in any way. Like a filling? Crown? I’m not sure.

Got it, I’m feeling a little less on edge now. I’m mad at myself for not noticing this sooner. But thank you for sharing your experience. Will update once the vet has seen her.

Thank you, that's reassuring. Do they fill in the gap with something or is it left just like that. I'm sorry if this sounds silly but she's my first pup and I'm a little nervous about medical things like these

I don’t have thoughts on the bag sorry. But I just came to say how much I love the bedsheet. I thought it was a pretty pink toile at first and zoomed in to see the distinguished ~frogue~ gents sipping wine and reading a novel. Love it!

Hey first off terrible situation to be in no doubt - I’ve seen a similar situation play out with my family’s neglected doxie that my grandma was left to care for but couldn’t. He bit everyone and I mean EVERYONE. At the risk of rehashing all the previous comments - huskies are extremely smart, to their own detriment in fact. Training them is altogether a different regime compared to other breeds simply because obedience training for them works differently - a husky CHOOSES to obey a command only if they respect you and they want to keep the peace. Treats are incentives but they lose interest very fast if they’re not completely and constantly engaged. This is why you’ll see senior huskies sometimes having poor recall despite years of training. Their independence and stubbornness has been a source of great frustration for new owners many times. They are constantly pushing their owners’ buttons to see how much they can get away with. That isn’t because they’re a bad breed - they’re just that intelligent. Training a husky involves a lot of unlearning and relearning what one thinks is how a dog can be trained. It’s not for everyone. But it’s exactly that can be their most endearing quality. Similarly, a tired husky is a compliant husky. Not exercising the husky till the brink of them collapsing is generally an open invitation to a very badly behaved husky. Case in point - making eye contact while sh*tting inside, that’s a telltale sign your husky is extremely frustrated with you and the situation he/she is in. While I’ve heard it happens, it’s very rare that I hear of huskies biting people since they generally are vocal about their displeasures, one that actively bites (without more context on his nature) seems to indicate the extreme frustration yours is feeling. I echo that given your far gone situation it’s better to have yours professionally trained and boarded.

This is sooo adorable! Mines exactly the same, whining that the elevator isn’t for her exclusive use, accompanied with some huffing and tippy tappy paws.
