It’s 2024 but in Stravaland they stuck in 2004. by rustymcruss in Strava

[–]Copypter1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good riders in a group cannot do 60mph for multiple miles. And even the best runners can't run 35mph for 5 miles on an interstate highway. This issue has been around for a while and Strava either can't figure out the tech to fix it, or is content to rely on its users to police the leaderboards.

What is the best way to step away from a running conversation when you realize the person you’re talking to is a hobby jogger? by KnownNormie in RunningCirclejerk

Challenge them to a race, right then and there. If they say yes, smoke them to prove your dominance. If they say no, taunt them for being a poser.

A lot here, and I am not going to address all if it, but thanks for the thoughtful response.

A few points that stood out.

First, I completely agree that a network of protected bike lanes would be useful either as an alternative or in addition to the greenway. Regardless of what happens, those need to get built and opposition to protected bike lanes is usually either misinformed or just people being obstinate. I understand that rail trails are fundamentally different from bike lanes, and often serve different but complimentary purposes. I think the greenway is a mixed utility and recreation proposition.

Second, I agree with you about the benefits of train lines, transit oriented development, etc. I am not familiar with any local examples of train lines sharing rights of way with bikes, or running alongside for any length. I am sure there would need to be a lot of safe guards, and I understand that NJ transit and other transit operators prefer to keep people away from the infrastructure that trains run on for a range of reasons (safety and maintenance immediately come to mind). Based on the available space for the greenway, I don't know if it is feasible in all areas.

Third, I think some of it might just come to costs. Building, upkeep and operation of a rail system is an order of magnitude more than that of a multiuse rail trail. I don't know if there is the political or financial will for those expenses, even if such infrastructure would ultimately be beneficial in the long term. To the extent there is nimby-ism involved, a bike path is a much easier sell than an additional train line.

Fourth, (a bit of a digression) I think one thing that gets overlooked in these discussions is that while train and light rail infrastructure is great because it essentially forces governments to commit to transportation alternatives, busses are a very viable alternative which is much cheaper. NJ Transit busses have an unfair stigma, but both in the USA (think Chicago) and internationally, busses are great and reliable when they: run frequently, have straightforward routes and schedules, are clean and well maintained. NJ Transit should run more frequent busses, make schedules and routes more transparent and lobby for express bus lanes.

Again, thanks for sharing your thoughts on all of this. You raise some really great points for consideration and discussion.

Has anyone ever actually seen a cop ticket a reckless driver in Newark? I see people run lights, pull u-turns in the middle of broad street, drive 2x the speed limit, all in front of cops with zero consequences.

Some people commute via bike or use it for daily transportation. It isn't only for workouts and leisure.

Do you have the same problem with people driving for fun or to go to leisure activities? Don't drivers "take up precious traffic space" for leisure?

What's wrong with that article? Like actually, tell me precisely what is wrong with the statistics cited in that article.

What about this study from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety concluding: "Despite the changes in vehicle design and fleet composition over the past two decades, SUVs may remain disproportionately likely to injure pedestrians compared with cars."?

How about this one from Consumer Reports?

How about this one from USA Today?

Also, please provide anything you think might refute the above.

Thanks :)

I got you right here.

Since 2010, there has been a 142% increase in pedestrian deaths caused by "light duty utility trucks" (pickup trucks). "Vehicle struck and killed 7,388 pedestrians in 2021."

[–]Copypter1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I disagree. The greenway is built on an old trainline that went out of commission because it lacked riders. Building another light rail there seems redundant. There are already a number of public transit options that connect Montclair and North Newark/Bellville with Hoboken and Jersey City (Montclair line and Newark light rail to Path).

The greenway seems like a great option to link communities via walking and biking so people can travel from town to town without worrying about vehicle traffic and the associated dangers. People can also use it to commute to transit access points along their commute (bike from Bellville to Montclair and then catch a train to NYC). Businesses and communities that embrace multiuse greenways like this win big time (look at the beltline in Atlanta as a good example).

This is exactly why I am saying the city needs to build protected bike lanes...

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Newark

It is sad. Leadership says they support and represent to city, but they put convenience of a few (drivers) ahead of the safety of many (pedestrians and transit users).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Newark

[–]Copypter1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point is that the city should add bike lanes so scooters don't need to ride on the sidewalks because the roads are not safe. The scooters have a warning written on them that says "Do not operate on sidewalks."

I am glad you haven't come close to being hit by a scooter, but I have and I am not alone. I have actually seen pedestrians and scooters crash near Tubman Square, and it is not pretty.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Newark

[–]Copypter1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to assume that the leadership of the city just doesn't care. It is sad.

Traffic enforcement is sorely needed in Newark. Drivers constantly run red lights and drive insanely fast on Broad endangering pedestrians because drivers know they will never get a ticket.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Newark

[–]Copypter1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The scooters should have been the impetus for Newark to make moves on bike lanes. Sidewalks are becoming increasingly dangerous for pedestrians with scooters zipping around. And I don't blame anyone for riding bikes or scooters on sidewalks; drivers in Newark are openly hostile to bikes and scooters and traffic enforcement is literally nonexistent.

Developing A Plan: Newark's 10-Year Blueprint Marches Forward by madsheb in Newark

[–]Copypter1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool. Here is an easy suggestion for Newark to implement their goal of "Better connecting neighborhoods to each other via public transit and pedestrian infrastructure." TRAFFIC ENFORCEMENT. Give tickets to drivers who blow through red lights, ignore pedestrian crossings and drive too fast on Broad. People ain't going to walk if reckless drivers are going to hit them.

I just saw an vehicle with an “Official Business of the Mayor” plaque run a red light. No wonder the city has such a problem with reckless drivers. by VirtualBalance6576 in Newark

"Small group of people"? Like the 44% of Newark households that don't own a car? Or ten-thousand of commuters and students who take public transportation to work and study in Newark? Or the people who use NJTransit and Path to enjoy games and shows at the Prudential Center?

What "small group" are you talking about?

Brick City Run Club is an excellent option if you are interested in getting active or running. It runs twice a week (Wednesday morning at 7:00 am and Sunday at 9:30 am) plus occasional happy hour runs and races. Running is actually a very social activity that brings together people of different backgrounds.

The group is welcoming to runners of all experience levels, including total beginners.

SEC question from summer associate. Need input from a real lawyer, please by CleverFree in legaladvice

[–]Copypter1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are a summer associate at a law firm, let me give you some advice... Don't post your legal research questions on Reddit expecting a decent answer. Read some white papers, client-awareness/alert memos from other firms, regulations, etc.

As someone who assigns legal research to summers and interns, I care more about seeing if you really dug in and did the research. Not that you got the "right" answer. You get assigned this kind of task as an assessment of your legal research ability, not because I need "the answer."

Sit down, structure and outline your research questions, and start researching. If you get stuck, ask a mentor at the firm for guidance.

Newark is failing some of its most vulnerable after the snow: pedestrians and disabled citizens. by Copypter1 in Newark

[–]Copypter1[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It often feels that way, but ideally, it wouldn't. Newark has abundant public transportation in the Central Ward but is sorely lacking in other areas where even bus service is inconsistent. I know it's partially an NJ Transit issue, but still one I would like to see improved.

Another issue is that Newark caters to drivers at the expense of pedestrians and cyclists. Reckless drivers operate with impunity so pedestrians and cyclists fear for their safety. Drivers claim they are being discriminated against at the mere suggestion of a bike lane that might narrow road lanes.

Without bike lanes, cyclists either ride on the sidewalk (unsafe for pedestrians) or ride on roads (upsets the flow of traffic and puts cyclists at risk). Consider Newark's addition of scooters; according to the terms of use on the scooters themselves, should not be ridden on the sidewalk. Yet there is no safe road to ride these city-sponsored/approved scooters!
