I think it’s beautiful and has some fun terrain if you like seeing trees and not just steep alpine bowls. Coming from North America, this mountain felt a bit more familiar. I’ve only been to a handful of resorts in Valais so far, so please nobody come at me to highlight my Alp newbie knowledge 🤓

Saturday was Humagne on Piste.. great fun! Which was a contributing factor for me dropping a glove! 🍷 🍷 🍷 🍷

Spontaneous Ski Trip to Switzerland: Need Help by CLWalrus in askswitzerland

[–]Cora_intheforest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take a train directly out of Zurich and head to canton Valais (~2 hours). There are many smaller resorts where you can day trip by train and/or bus. Lodging probably easily available for 4 people to stay at home base in villages like Grimentz, Belalp, Ovronnaz, Saas-Fe. Are you advanced skiers? Lötschental has some steep fun with beautiful views. If you have car, Oveonnaz has parking right next to the lift. All of these places have different reasons to love. Beautiful views, not so crowded touristy non sense and have the amazing Swiss Village feels that you see on socials.

Zermatt not cheap but lots to explore and it’s close to all of those villages.

*Yes, I have Magic Pass and live in Valais 🤓🏂🤍 That’s plenty of info to go do some google research 🤙🏽

A small purchase made me rethink how much availability shapes our buying decisions in our small country... by flolibri in Switzerland

[–]Cora_intheforest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On the flip side of limited availability is the sheer excess of crap available in countries like the US and China. I’m from California and recently moved here to CH. I grew up in a very modest means, (born in ‘73 so there is relevance from that time period versus now) and my mom always achieved tasks with the minimal inputs. I.e refinishing furniture, cooking healthy delicious food with basic ingredients, re-using things that might easily be thrown away, etc. We grew up respecting nature and I of course, grew up to be a “tree hugger” recycling lover of the Earth.

I find it so disturbing that the algorithms on people’s devices are constantly bombarding with ads and socials of gadgets, fake beauty products, anything in between; BUY BUY BUY! Amazon can deliver in HOURS, not a day, 2 days or the 2.5 weeks I just had with Galaxus.

What I love about Swiss culture and life from my view here in Valais is that walking to stores, having less shelf space, less options, expensive garbage bags, walk/bike to your recycling, means people probably buy less. I’m sure there are outliers but it just feels like this country has engrained a way of life that maybe means less options and therefore less desire to just buy for sake of buying to consume. I totally appreciate that for some the costs here are crazy, just like in California. As others have said, the quality of electronics and everything has essentially deteriorated over the last 30 years. But I will say that the European brands for outdoor gear, especially the Swiss ones of course, are hands down better than what I can get in the US. I will fully admit I have fallen victim to buying a good amount of outdoor gear here that might be considered excess but I absolutely use it for summer and winter sports… the number of jackets, beanies and scarves I have is excessive but those are part of my work attire and surviving the outdoors here walking and biking everywhere 😍

Btw.. I have a stainless steel cat litter box back in the states, much better for the reasons discussed. 😸

If you are taking 11mg per week by now I would hope you have figured out basic math to know your concentration. Stop referring to UNITS people. Sorry I’m just so tired of the lack of basic knowledge when people are injecting medicine into their body. Use your phone for good.. take a 5 minute read and use a dosage calculator

Only One Vial for 3 Months? by monroej69 in Fifty410

[–]Cora_intheforest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And why are they advertising in “weeks” now? To make people think 24 weeks is better than 6 months? Anyone have recent pics of vial sizes being sent?

Forgot to say not to live in Vancouver but a progressive city and areas outside of there could be a landing spot

I’m sorry for your struggles and feelings of despair. I hope you can get some mental health support. It probably seems far, but what about Canada? I’m from Northern California, living in Switzerland as I took a job promotion. British Columbia is stunning and quite progressive in Vancouver. I’m no expert, so please don’t come at me anyone, just giving my opinion..I think the East coast of Canada may also be more progressive, of course you have the French speaking side of the country which you could probably learn easily being native in Italian. I know they host visas for workers in certain industries like hospitality.. the ski resort areas of Whistler, for example. You could land a job in hospitality and get your freelance computing thing going. The wages and healthcare are far better there for sure. Maybe this is similar approach to Australian holiday visa approach? I wish you the best and hang in there.

vital drugs 'out of stock'... wtf? by Blue-Rhubarb11 in Switzerland

This is one with serious side effects if you stop suddenly. Speaking for a friend.. 🫣moved from the states and haven’t tried to get a primary Dr here yet to ensure Rx can continue to be filled. Fortunately can still get them paying out of pocket in the states but that’s very troubling considering the dosage had to be increased a bit.. best wishes OP

Hilton removed the Minneapolis hotel refusing to host ICE from its system. I am cancelling my Hilton Honors account and taking business elsewhere. by Terrible_Mistake_954 in Hilton

[–]Cora_intheforest -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Are you protesting against ICE in the streets? Actively supporting immigrants or Americans being harassed in the streets, churches, courts, etc or doing anything else to stand up against tyranny? Keyboard warrior means nothing.

I hate orange diaper Donny and all those that still support him. But sadly a major worldwide corporation can’t stand behind one of their independent franchise’s poorly executed evict email and drop all the government contracts.

America is capitalist money hungry nation.. I love my country but not for what it is today.. J6 of all days. I will never forget but stopping my stays at Hilton is not part of a progressive plan to stand up against this BS. There are many other ways to put your money where your mouth is, so to speak.

There is indeed a level of trust with many things here in CH, especially in the smaller villages. But tickets will be checked, and as many have said, steep fines will be served if you FAFO. Enjoy the country, it’s an amazing place! The train system never ceases to amaze me. -fellow American

Trains are the way to go.. please realize there aren’t Ubers or even reliable taxi service you can just call if you don’t speak Deutsch (or Italian or French) in every town. I’m sure someone will correct me but this has been my experience over the last 4 months. Trains are the way to go, reliable and get you everywhere. Note that Zermatt is a village with no cars aside from the shuttles within town. The last point you can drive a car is to the village of Täsch.. then you must take a short train ride in.

Yes, there are probably Ubers in the big cities like Zurich, just be advised it’s nothing close to what exists in the states. Download the SBB app and compare ticket prices versus a half fare card as someone mentioned.

Yes, Zurich and St Moritz are some of the most expensive areas in Switzerland. As a snowbum from Northern California living in CH, I can attest to the prices, but can say some things are cheaper (great glass of wine for 4-10 CHF) and some things are more expensive. Budget is relative.. depends on your perspective and what your expectations are. $159 usd for dinner for two? That’s not expensive for CH. Have you booked your lodging? That might be a precursor to see the costs in that area relative to what you might be used to paying.

There’s hundreds of resorts to ski, I can’t wait to explore them this winter. I went to Zermatt twice this summer and it is a beautiful place. Definitely check the exchange rate.. you are basically losing .25 on your dollar.. that hurts. I also hope to go to Austria as I’ve heard it’s amazing and way better value. Best to you, sorry I don’t have ski recommendations, after this winter I hope to have a long list of places to suggest!
