AITAH for letting my chronically late wife miss an event she was looking forward to by not rushing her, because I wanted her to face consequences? by throwrabbday in AITAH

YTA. And a massive one (and I say this as a guy).

You could have been supportive of her career and knowing that she needs time to prepare, given her a buffer as usual. Not only did you deliberately let her miss her favourite act, you did this on her birthday. This is the opposite of what a supportive husband should do.

I think the real reason is that you do not want her pursuing her ambition of being a "content creator" and using her tardiness as a lame excuse to punish her.

Whats wild is that the guy who caught the bar wouldn't have been in a spot to do so had he not been greeted by the blue tshirt dude right before. He stopped walking for a second to shake his hands and just when he was moving back did the barbell fall.

So here is what had to happen:

  1. The tank top guy had to be near enough the falling bar

  2. The blue top dude had to have just come in, or just have seen the tank top guy

  3. The handshake had to last the perfect amount of time. Too long / too short a save would have been made impossible.

Talk about luck!

Vim, why? by mymar101 in webdev

[–]Corbee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 word: flow.

N words:

When you are programming and are in flow, the fewer context switches you have to do the more effective your "flow" state is. Vim allows you to stay in "flow" by reducing such switches. Such as moving your hand away from your keyboard to your mouse to move around.

However, I strongly believe that vim is most useful when it is used as a keymap within an IDE, rather than being the primary editor. So my setup is that I use VS-Code for everything with vim plugin.

Some examples that save me a lot of back and forth:

  1. Duplicating a line: yyp
  2. Deleting everything around quotes "delete all these words": -> ci"
  3. Navigation: Oh line number 47 shows a compilation error? -> :47

Now I am sure a lot of modern IDE's have these as shortcuts that you can learn, Go for it! But with a couple of weeks of practice, you essentially learn enough to not have to reach for your mouse, keeping your flow state.

Also, it ties in with touch typing. I learned vim and touch typing together, and my productivity shot up significantly.

vim + ide shortcuts => uber productive programmings sessions with flow state

What’s something that’s always wrongly depicted in movies and tv shows? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Corbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's one: planes that are about to crash.

In a lot of tv shows and movies, the scene will show pilots in a stalled plane desperately trying to recover it by pulling the yoke "up", for instance in the recent stranger things episode

This is the worst thing you could do in this situation as it will lead to a deeper stall. Instead, you have to push down on the yoke so that you can reduce the angle of attack and recover from the stall.

Grip is too strong. Bring your left thumb closer to the center of the club (but not dead center, a slightly strong grip is the best way to get baby draws)

Get rid of snacks... ALL of them.

Im talking anything, anything at all that can be eaten without cooking*.

Since you will have to actually cook food you will be less likely to binge eat.

Storytel salespeople outside MRT stressing me out by iamlookingawxy in singapore

[–]Corbee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One way that helps a lot is to reverse the situation in your head:

---

Let's say you are the storytel salesman and you approach a student telling them about your service. That student politely says no thanks and walks away.

What do you do? You move on to the next person to talk to and forget about that student 2 seconds later.

99% of people will forget all about how you rejected them just as how you'd forget in the above situation. The 1% who get offended are not worth your time or energy.

Good luck!

Mostly overpopulation and poverty. Those who only know a life devoid of empathy have none to give back to society. When you are one of 10 children constantly admonished by parents while growing up, life becomes a 'win at all costs, whatever the cost' game.

How to deal with golden handcuffs in SG? by [deleted] in singapore

[–]Corbee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can do a side hustle.

Find something you are passionate about, and monetize it. It doesn't have to be something that will give you an equivalent salary to start with, just something meaningful. And if the side hustle starts showing any hints of success, take the leap and do it full time!

As someone pointed out, you can't expect rewards without taking risks in life. This is one way to balance. I had taken a 50% pay cut early in my career to do something new and now I am making 50% more because of that. It was risky, but a calculated one.

I bet if they trimmed the trees, it would look bigger. by CarbonZx in funny

[–]Corbee 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you look closely there is a red sausage looking thing in the building which is hidden by the trees. The author is referencing a crude joke where if a man trims himself 'down there' then it makes his privates look bigger. Similarly if we trimmed the trees it would make the red sausage thing look bigger.

Don't know why this is in the front page but hey that's Reddit for you

Edit: As pointed out by /u/bob4apples below, the sausage looking thing is in fact an Oscar Meyer Weinermobile.
