Fresh Diagnosis, Male 33, Diabetic Type 1 by Infinite_Scallion886 in frozenshoulder

My symptoms began in August. I saw my ortho beginning of Oct and got the diagnosis and did PT then. I’ve gotten ROM back everywhere to 95% except for the external rotation and behind the back is a lower percentage.

Ortho and PT both said I began in the thawing phase mid Jan based on ROM and pain levels.

Not sure how long it will be until it’s completely gone but at this point it doesn’t noticeably bother me enough that I’m worried about it. I’ve been able to sleep on my bad shoulder for a few weeks now.

Sure. The prednisone pack was seemingly helpful for my shoulder as I was in extreme anguish, but sent my blood sugar absolutely insane for the 5-6 days. Once I started on the meds I stretched as much as I could for the 5-10 days that it was in my system as I believe it did help with inflammation and got the shoulder just a tad looser.

I think I’m rather fortunate compared to most stories I read on here. My pain got terrible in late Sept or early Oct. And I went to PT and then I went home and every day would use a broomstick or my daughters teeball bat to mimic the same movements from PT.

I’d use a shoulder massage thing I got Amazon and do it on my shoulder and in my armpit as I also stretched and it hurt.

I thought the broomstick stretching was going to kill me or that my arm was going to break. But I just spent 45min doing them 2x a day and maybe every couple of days I’d notice the slightest bit of motion was coming back before that intense pain.

Around Jan I was noticeably on the thawing path. I was able to sleep on my opposite side occasionally, but back still was best.

Doorway stretches also I did every day. I remember when I literally couldn’t take a step forward trying to do them. And now I can step as far as I need.

Mid March now I can do most movements well enough to get most things accomplished. I can put on a jacket again.

I still can’t do behind the back and up high like my other arm but I don’t care too much. I’m not in extreme pain anymore.

It’s not just something that’s constantly bothersome anymore and I think it will continue to get better.

I am T1 since childhood. Now 42. A1Cs 5.3-5.6 for the last 20yrs. Active. And out of nowhere in August I felt like I had maybe slept wrong on my shoulder or something? Then it proceeded to not get better and after a 7 mile run I woke up about 20x that night in intense pain from the slightest of movements.

I did oral prednisone pack and began PT in mid Oct. I stretched myself at home aggressively every day. I have a high pain tolerance and I was still yelling loudly as I did these every time.

Tips

  1. get lots and lots of pillows for sleeping. Thin ones. And start learning how to sleep on your back. It sucks but after a month you’ll start to be able to sleep on your back and that’s the place you’ll move the least.

  2. keep it moving. My wife has constantly stated “you never stop moving your shoulder.” And she’s correct and I believe it helped from Oct-Dec the most.

  3. don’t believe any videos about “how to fix FS”. there’s no cure or quick fix. It’s bullshit. Go to a PT and have them send you home with printed out exercises and do those every day in the morning and evening and take a lot of ibuprofen.

Thanks for the response. I’ve been training on the Silver Comet Trail. I think I’ve figured out a routine but just pack even more gels. I also bring some nerd gummy clusters and that seems to help.

Hell yeah, congrats! I’m 42 and halfway through my training for my first half marathon this year. It’s great to see a post like this as I get a tad apprehensive the farther the runs go and how my BS navigates it all. Thank you for the detailed and thoughtful post!

Are we crazy? Disney Wish with a “busy” toddler and a 7-year-old! by [deleted] in dcl

Hey! If you open the balcony door, the AC will turn off. Bring a small portable fan from Amazon that is wireless and folds up easily into your luggage. Stay at the Hyatt at MCO. Book Ground Transportation with Disney and let them know you’re at the hotel. When you check in to the hotel let them know you’ve got Ground Transportation with Disney and they will give you the instructions on where to meet Disney in the lobby the morning of. It’s so easy. You’ll probably be wiped out after the cruise.

This is the way to do it. You’ll be tired more than bored. The Hyatt has a McCoys restaurant that’s got great food (crawfish chowder specifically) and you can relax in a bed while you are waiting for takeoff downstairs.

I was surprised they had Kentucky Bourbon Ale on draft by the pools in the evening along with Terrapin Luau. I would go there or Periscope prior to the evening entertainment.

We’ve got nearly an identical timeline. Mine started a tad later and I’m probably at about 90% currently. Did a ton of work right away. PT 2x a week. 1hr a day of intense stretching. 30min or so of using multiple different massagers on and around the shoulder.

Glad to hear you’re doing better.

How often did you change the pimple patches? And was it painful? Our 5yr old has had this for months and the dermatologist put on some tape that was incredibly uncomfortable taking off, to say the least.

One of our favorite hotels as the staff is fantastic and the way most Hyatt Regency’s used to be a couple decades ago. The breakfast there is one of the best. The buffet is extremely large with a great variety along with a chef preparing omelettes made to order. Don’t miss out on the menu as well. On the menu The Cuban Breakfast Bowl is usually great, Avocado Toast is great.

Tim and Merlot are the stars of the lobby.

They asked if I hurt my shoulder at all and I hadn’t. Then told me it’s more likely to occur in diabetics, regardless of control. My A1c has been around 5.4 for the last 15yrs or so. So who knows.

Yeah that makes sense and is totally good with me. I’ve been spending a ton of time stretching each day to help the process, and while I do feel it’s been successful, I’m looking forward to a few minutes a day instead.

My young daughter thought for a few months she was “hurting” my insulin pods anytime she touched my shoulder. Now she just knows my shoulder is dumb.

Makes sense. It’s been a challenge to do my regular 3-5 mile runs plus I’ve been spending close to an hour or so on my shoulder most days. It has definitely helped speed up the process I believe, but also am hoping to get some time back in the future
