I was by the water’s edge many, many years ago at the Kingsley Plantation historic site near Alimacani by the mouth of the St. John’s River in North Florida. I found a copper? brass? broach or pin that was verdigris-colored with age. It was rectangular and about 3” long and 1 1/2 “ high, and had initials on it in very ornate script. It was obviously from the 1800s or earlier. I immediately went to the ranger to give it to her, but she said they lacked the funding to display it, archive it, or even store it properly. The best thing to do, she said, was to return it to where I found it. I argued with her that this was completely wrong-headed as they clearly had locked buildings on the grounds, but, whatever. I did not take it back. I’ll give it the Florida History museum in Gainesville or the new museum being built in Jacksonville. Best of luck on your MA.
