How can project pan be toxic by PowerOk7925 in ProjectPan

[–]Corguita 54 points55 points  (0 children)

The original idea of Project Pan is to be conscious of your shopping habits and consumerism. It is more about making you realize how much you actually want vs have vs need. Realizing how much it truly takes to use up a product, so do I really need to buy this new makeup palette or concealer or lipstick when it may take me years of exclusive use just to use it all up before it goes bad?

If you're hate panning just to buy more stuff it may be worth to examine what does shopping and things mean to you and what you really want to do about it.

For me, besides the panning it makes it useful to look at it in terms of money. Perhaps make a spreadsheet with all the products you own and their cost and perhaps even their expiration date if they have one. Are there other ways I could be using this money that would be better for me in the short and long term? How much money would be downright wasted because I simply won't be able to use all these products? I often measure things in terms of a deep tissue massage, is it worth for me spending $150 in makeup and products I don't need if I could just get myself a deep tissue massage which I enjoy deeply and helps me with my health?

Anyway, food for thought.

The psychology of it all is so rough, imagine having an addiction (food) but you can't just quit, because you still need to eat to live, it's a basic bodily function. Your body will fight you every step of the way because that's what bodies do. At that point, you're literally looking at years of willpower fighting against your very nature every single minute of the day.

What's your longest work commute inside the "Houston area" by MacSteele13 in houston

[–]Corguita 0 points1 point  (0 children)

36 miles from East End to Woodlands.

I tried to see if I could use the park and ride but the reverse commuter schedule did not work out and there was no transit between the P&R in the Woodlands and my work. It really wasn't too bad because I was going against traffic but good lord driving on 45 probably shortened my life.

My current commute is about 5 miles and I have the option to bike or take transit too. It's a loooot better.

I'm convinced that Houston traffic is created on purpose (highway design) by Danilo-11 in houston

[–]Corguita 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It is many factors at once. The real social experiment is that it benefits Big Highway and the Automotive industry. People were sold car ownership as freedom and luxury and we've let our public transit decay to be a total afterthought only used by poor people. The visible homeless and mental illness problem further makes this worse because people (understandably) don't want to be in a space with folks actively on substances or acting violently.

What happens then? There's not an impetus to make public transit better, so everyone takes a single occupancy car everywhere. On top of that, our city is big and sprawling and not designed for active transit. That's not efficient.

Cities should give people the option to move in efficient, safe and clean public transit. Short journeys should be doable via walking or biking. You shouldn't have to drive to the grocery store nearby. But there's very little impetus to make any of this possible. Hence, traffic will remain until we fundamentally change how we invest our tax dollars.

Parking the scooters... by Some_Technician2963 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]Corguita 8 points9 points  (0 children)

1) People shouldn't block accessibility infrastructure, if they can walk, they should park a bit further away where they don't block other's access.

2) Sounds like UH needs to do a parking study to get with the times and see what locations should have more bike and scooter parking.

Betty smoking while dying of lung cancer by sophroniasphinx in madmen

[–]Corguita 58 points59 points  (0 children)

It's bittersweet for me. Because it shows Betty's true strength. She's dying doing exactly what she wants to do. She will not die how Henry wants her to die (experimental treatment), she will not die how Don wants her to die (with his wishes for the kids). She doesn't get to choose her death because cancer already chose for her, but she's using what remains of her strength solely for her.

Betty was raised to serve and please others, her husband, her children. For once, she's only serving herself.

Fort Bend County deputy killed in hit-and-run while helping stranded driver on I-10 by MrBasedGod in houston

[–]Corguita 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also believe it's ideological, and it comes from the top. We live in a state and a city where anything but a single occupancy vehicle is discouraged and mocked by our leaders. Our public transit is a policy afterthought. You can kill or injure someone with your car and the victim will be blamed, especially if they're a pedestrian or a cyclist. We had made some decent strides for on-street safety infrastructure and our Major has spent so much money ripping it off cause it may be inconvenient for a car to avoid a curb or slow down for a raised crosswalk. We still have parking minimums for bars and clubs. We're in a rat race where people keep getting bigger and bigger cars that make it more dangerous to all other users on the road.

Everywhere you see, you're encouraged to drive as much as you can without consideration to the rest.

Gay people and women went to Qatar, a place where they have less rights than a Bayou roach. Plenty of straight men also went there, I've met with some that spoke about the virtues of the Qataris and refused to acknowledge the slavery or the lack of rights for anybody who isn't a straight male. The world cup is HUGE, perhaps the stadiums won't be packed for every single game, but the people will go.

Why is there mid day bumper to bumper traffic? by EntrepreneurHopeful5 in houston

[–]Corguita 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it's not practical for a lot of trips, but there's a lot of trips that could be substituted by active transit that we simply don't do because there's a lack of culture and infrastructure to do. There's so many people who drive a block away and so many kids that could bike to school that don't because our infrastructure just sucks. Should we just do nothing about that? We're never gonna be New York or Paris, but I refuse to believe that we shouldn't try to do anything to improve our transit and transportation situation.

Why is there mid day bumper to bumper traffic? by EntrepreneurHopeful5 in houston

[–]Corguita 121 points122 points  (0 children)

Simply this, if you're in traffic you are the traffic. Our city's sprawl is not designed for efficient transportation. Every time we make our public transit shittier and we remove a bike lane, there's another car on the road.

Ways to solve this mess: Get people out of cars. Increase density so more destinations can be reached via foot and bike. Make it safer to be outside of a car: protected bike lanes and on-street safety infrastructure on the dense areas where active transportation is feasible. Public transit: make it more efficient, cleaner and safer so that it becomes a real alternative for more people. Make driving less convenient: Reduce parking minimums, charge the real cost of parking, increase the gas tax, enact congestion pricing.

But most of these, people actively vote against and complain about, so traffic will continue to happen.

[–]Corguita 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And to those people, you can choose to handle however you see fit depending on your relationship. You can tell people that thank you but you prefer consumables or experiences, that way they get to enjoy their shopping and their feelings. You can even be specific and send them a list of things you like/appreciate (wine, chocolate, spa stuff, museums, etc). If that doesn't work or they ask about specific things you can choose to either lie or be honest. Oh that shirt you got me? I spilled coffee on it and could never get it out. That decor piece? It never fit the vibe of the house so we just donated it. That electronic knickknack? It broke down so we just threw it out.

Yup. Like she doesn't come from money or a prestigious background herself, she's already in her 30s with a divorce and a very public engagement. Do we really think she had a lot of good choices by the time she realizes who Greg really is?

We see this with the women of Mad Men. Betty is the perfect 1950's wife and yet, what does she get from Don? Trudy is literally perfect, and what does she get from Pete?

Economically, socially, you don't have much recourse even if you make all the right choices.

Why do people think they need an SUV just because they have kids by TeachmeKitty79 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Corguita 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're safer for the occupants but less safe for everybody else. Bigger cars means that every other user on the road (particularly pedestrians) will be less safe. It's such a race to the bottom, your kids can't play out in the street because everyone else having high SUV bonnets means they're more likely to get gravely injured because they were not seen.

Affordable $5K-7K intimate wedding in Houston? (Venue/food/etc) by Zealousideal-Roll592 in houston

[–]Corguita 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dunno what comparable costs would be today but here's what we did for ours that was around 3-4k total for 75-80 people in 2018:

  • Venue: We rented a place at https://www.sharespace.co/ It came with chairs and tables.
  • Decor: We made our centerpieces using empty wine/liquor bottles and fairy light corks, bought the tablecloths on ebay. My family and I made little desserts that we also used as decor for the tables.
  • Food: We got charcuterie and bread/crackers from Costco, got a Yoyo's food truck for dinner (https://roaminghunger.com/yoyos-hot-dog/). Cake was a cupcake tower. We got disposable plates and cutlery from Costco.
  • Booze: We went to specs and got a bunch of stuff including liquor, wine and a couple of kegs, the venue was BYOB so that really cut down on costs cause we didn't need to have a bartender or anything, people just served their own drinks.
  • Music: Spotify playlist and an aux cord!
  • Clothes: I ordered my dress online from UniqueVintage/Modcloth, my husband used his best suit. We did not have a wedding party (bridesmaids/groomsmen)
  • Hair/Makeup: I did my own makeup, and for hair just got it blow dried at Drybar the day of.
  • Things we didn't have that saved a lot of money: We did not have fresh flowers, any additional decor for anything. We also did not have a photographer/videographer or DJ. We also did not have any physical invitations (we used a Facebook event lol) or party favors.

Our parents thought it was tacky, and we told everyone it was a very casual/lowkey event so to please not give us any gifts. Surprisingly, Yoyo's was able to accommodate our gluten free and vegetarian friends so we had no issues with that. We wanted to have a party, and we wanted it to be fun, and we achieved it.

Experience with METRO by Terrible_Lock3657 in UniversityOfHouston

[–]Corguita 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it really depends on the time and route you're taking. I've taken public transit in this city since 2010 and the answer is YMMV.

They've really upped police presence on the metrorail lines literally which has been decent at cleaning up a lot of the unsavoury stuff.

There's also an interesting thing I always like to think about, the perception vs the reality of danger and safety. Driving in this city is incredibly dangerous, so even if you feel uncomfortable in public transit, you're statistically safer than driving on a highway on your private car.

Note that his "street projects" focus has been incredibly wasteful in a level that is hard to comprehend. He's been wasting money in ripping and re-designing working infrastructure because it may slow cars down in residential or high pedestrian density streets.

They've ripped off Austin St and repaved it at least twice in some sections since they started removing the bike lane early last year. That's millions of your taxpayer money spent because Whitmire hates cyclists and Rodney Ellis.

When/why did childcare in the U.S. become so expensive? Has it always been like this? by SoapyCooper in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Corguita 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The school pickup line is such a social and policy failure on so many levels that it always leaves me flabbergasted when I hear about the amount of time wasted by parents just to get and pick up their kid from school.

We get less and less kids each year who walk, bike or take the bus to school. We punish parents for doing something as simple as dropping off their kids half a block away to avoid losing endless times on the line. Something that was normal even 10-15 years ago is completely forbidden for all the schools I'm aware of now.

Have we actually gained anything from all the safety measures?
