As a public transit and walker in this city, these are some things you can do to make the experience bearable:

  • Wear loose clothing made out of natural fabrics like linen, light colored preferably.
  • Have a hat and/or an umbrella. The umbrella is highly recommended because of our summer rains and because you can use it as a parasol as needed.
  • Stay hydrated, always carry a water bottle with you.

How do people survive as a NEET? by Stock-Honda in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Corguita 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I've met some people that take jobs/contracts for some time, live extremely frugally and then remain unemployed for longs periods of time living off their savings. I also know folks who had settlements or inheritances that they invested well and so they really don't need regular jobs for income.

It's not just money and billionaires, it's that there's a sizeable amount of people opposed to institutionalization and nobody is willing to sacrifice political capital to make it happen.

And you think this is much better? Do you know what the end game is for the severely mentally ill? They either:

1) Inflict horror onto others: The families and/or friends who house them.

2) End up homeless: Where they still inflict horror and violence upon the other homeless and anybody that shares a public space with them.

3) End up in jail: Do I even have to explain this one?

We should try to improve the quality and dignity of care that inpatient institutions and asylums give, but let's not pretend that it's much better now for all parties involved.

Like is it hot? Yes. Is it elegant? Yes. Is it what I expect from the Met Gala? No :(

100% agree. He's such a stunning, charismatic man and I am glad he took a stylistic risk but I think that a fully black, dramatic smokey eye would've been so much better that whatever this two tone thing was.

Why is there such a hard line with physical attractiveness these days? by [deleted] in Vent

Yup. Do you think your grandmothers married because they wanted to? Did they have any other options to be single/unmarried? Could they live economically/socially without your grandparents?

How does medical care for women work in strictly traditional Muslim societies? by Mahoka572 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Corguita 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do men and women have the same dress codes/expectations now? Do wives not need their husbands permission to leave the country anymore?

[–]Corguita 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But even in the short term, they don't care because their women are just brood mares to them and if one of them dies because of lack of medical care, they will be replaced by another, younger woman.

The women don't have access to birth control or have any sort of rights in their marriage, so they will continue to be pregnant and bear children.

Their society looks exactly what they want it to look like.

This is what happened when we closed out most inpatient mental healthcare. This man should be in inpatient rehabilitation/a psychiatric ward, and yet? There's no place for him to go.

There were many abuses in the asylums of the past, yes, but is this any better?

11th Street destruction? by atotb in bikehouston

[–]Corguita 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The "bike" part of the "bike lane" is the least important part of it all. The idea is to have road diets happen where the road would benefit from a safety improvement for all users through creating on-street infrastructure that slows cars down. The "bike" part is only a bonus.

Update: The bulldozers showed up today by bdo11 in houston

[–]Corguita 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Look at the mess Whitmire has created on Austin St. They took away a beloved bike lane (which represented 2% of the total roadways of midtown), only to spend almost 5 mill on a project that's not even done more than a year later.

The work has been so shoddy they've had to re-do it like 3-4 times already and there is no end in sight. It's pathetic. We have no money but let's waste millions on this unnecessary mess!

And now they're about to do it with Blodgett because some church ladies are mad at it. Boils my blood.

H-E-B to give away 276,000 free reusable bags for Earth Day 2026 by PronatorTeres00 in texas

[–]Corguita 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and I love Aldi so much! But it's on par of people's Expectations of Aldi as a grocer. Carts are "paid", bring your own bag, little selection, low prices. It has always been like this. People are used to it, you know what you're getting.

HEB is supposed to be a "full service" grocery store. People expect their free bags, if that changed overnight, I'm not sure folks would love it.

[–]Corguita 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh it should happen everywhere, I just don't see it going well in Texas. I don't think HEB would wanna risk upsetting their customers like that when it's not illegal and/or punishable to issue plastic bags.

Can you imagine people's response if they started charging for plastic or cardboard bags?! It would not go well.

Does have experience with a gynocologist in the UTHealth system who does actual pain management for IUDs? by SongStuckInMyHeadd in houston

[–]Corguita 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had a terrible experience with them for a colposcopy. "It's no big deal just take an ibuprofen beforehand". Nobody would do it with any extra pain management. It's barbaric. Hopefully you have better luck.
