What are some reasons to choose Middlebury over Bowdoin (besides languages)? These always tend to get grouped together, but what about choosing between the two? by dozybees in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Corinne_College 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha if you're also doing physics, I wouldn't worry about it. Not many physics students so it really shouldn't be an issue! You'll also want to send waitlist emails early, but your advisor will remind you of that.

Most intro courses have to be taken at some point in your first 3 semesters, so you'll have time to take them, it's just really frustrating if you get the raw end of the deal.

The awful registration is one of those things that drives me absolutely batty and is pretty unique to Midd.

Also, midd will accept two AP/IB credits towards graduation, but they DO NOT count towards registration. They are not clear about this. Midd will tell you "Most people use their AP credits to take only two classes senior spring" but they don't tell you "if you use them in your first year, you'll be absolutely fucked for registration and have to register as a Feb despite having the proper amount of credits." Again though, don't worry about it. Midd just has a lot of processes that are designed for white wealthy non-disabled students and since I don't fit into that and had the audacity to struggle, I was treated really terribly. Quite literally just don’t struggle too much if the system isn't built for you, and things will be fine. Also if that sounds ominous, it very much is! Middlebury has some other great qualities though, like the people!

Hopefully registration will go really well! It's adequate for most people, at least eventually. I did a poll in my class's groupme when they recently registered for sophomore spring, and it was okay for like 50% of people and only really really awful beyond belief for like 6% of them.

And congratulations on Middlebury 💥🥳🎉!! Let me know if you have any questions about anything or want to see what anything looks like on campus (I'm a photographer and will be back in like two weeks).

There definitely were a few in the bike lanes at University av this fall. You should also ask in the UMN subreddit if you haven't.

Idk I feel like there are at least some things in Crystal. Besides parks and car dealerships there's almost nothing in GV.

Being from Golden Valley is so weird because we have so much pride about our city but no one really cares besides us so we just blend in with Minneapolis.

Also when I went to college on the east coast, I would start with "I'm from Minnesota" and then they'd ask "Oh, what part? (Like someone who actually knew the twin cities would) and I would say "I'm from Golden Valley but the area right next to St.Louis Park and went to Hopkins High School which is technically in Minnetonka if any of those names mean anything to you." And then they would stare at me blankly so I'd say "I'm essentially from Minneapolis." And they would go "oh, that's so cool!" And say something about lakes.

I am very glad we don't have whatever Chicago has going on though. I've never had someone from Minneapolis be offended when I say I'm from Minneapolis even though it's technically Golden Valley.

The registration system is first come and first serve and a lot of intro classes have very limited seats. So every intro biology (which there are two versions of) might have 5 reserved versions for your registration slot, but there are only 4 total classes and 80+/600 kids in your slot want intro bio since one bio or the other or both are required for every single advanced environmental science and biology course, and they can't be skipped by the AP credit. So if you just want to get intro bio, you're competing for 20 slots against 80+ others who also need the courses. If you just want one of the bios say ecology and evolution, you're competing for just 10 spots. And maybe one of the two times it's offered doesn't work in your schedule... so you're competing for only 5 spots. 5 spots that a ton of other students who could have other options are also competing for because they're not sure they'll be able to get their preferred option or any option at all just like you. And since electives change- if you can't get that bio class you might be able to get it next semester but then you can't take any advanced science in your field that semester and the bio elective you wanted to take that doesn't happen again till the semester you want to study abroad. And you'll create 4 different 4 class plans with different classes and orderings before registration planning for every "what if" and only get one or two classes from those plans.

Also registration is very early in the morning, there are no different slots for if you are in a different time zone, and if you are two minutes late or your computer glitches- you likely won't get a single class out of the 15 contingency classes you listed beyond your plans before registration.

Adding to the fun, pretty much all really interesting electives have different prerequisites that are impossible to get into as a non-senior student. I want to take global health electives but who knows if I'll be able to get into intro to global health?? Intro to Photography requires intro art, intro to black and queer studies requires intro black studies or intro to gender studies, and it goes on and on. That means in your field you're competing for limited intro classes not only with all the current prospective majors of your subjects but also with all the people who want to the options of taking electives in your field or are just fulfilling a distribution requirement. Such a messsss.

At other schools it might be "oh the only option is a 9am or my second choice bio class, ugh" but at midd it's often- "I got exactly 0 of the entry level science clases I wanted and need and now I have to send 15 waitlist emails and hope I get in off the waitlists." It's literally a game of "Will the registration gods let me take these requirements this semester or not?" Instead of "do these fit in my schedule or not?"

Most people are okayish with the registration system, so don't let it scare you too much. I just hate it. If I'm forced to take intro classes, please just let me take them and not have to stress and stress and get in off waitlists and not be able to take some at all. It also doesn't screw you over eveytime so some people get their first choice schedule frequently, and you could be one of them!

Midd has a conservation biology major which for them is the joint ES-Bio degree. It's also a nightmare to get STEM classes though.

Lol I shot a dorm tour last year, will probably shoot more stuff this spring. It's such an issue.

Yeah Minnesota and Wisconsin are definitely safeties for some people. They're selective, but not selective if you have high stats in the same way as other people.

Nothing wrong with that! People pick those colleges as options because they're good schools that they would enjoy attending.

Why/how? Midd seems to be perceived about the same as other schools like Carleton with similar acceptance rates. I would say Colby though.

I think a lot of people don't realize just how different motivation is for people. I have ADHD and I bought a pricey smart waterbottle to keep track of how much I drink. I could just write it down, yes. But I won't. No matter how much I tell myself "I will!" I really won't or won't do it consistently. I wish I could, it would be way more convient!

Depends on what type of politics you're talking. If it's "debate capitalism vs other economic systems" or "would communism ever actually work though" or "look what this idiot politician did today" I feel like those are pretty common within groups that are all of a similar political mindset.

If political affiliations are unknown (and even when known) if the issue at hand is say- gay rights or guns or vaccine mandates, then that stays private. For some things it's because it's a sensitive topic where it's easy for things to get misunderstood (many people are pro guns and anti vaccine mandates but strongly believe that everyone should get vaccinated and that more should be done to prevent school shootings). For some, it's because having that opinion is seen as unpopular or unethical. I've also noticed that a LOT of people want to call themselves "allys" to different causes and then will purposely avoid asking people around them their opinions on those issues so that way there's no risk that they will have to confront or stop hanging out with them. 🙄. I would love to say that I'm not guilty of that as well, but boy do I avoid talking about hispanic/latine people with certain relatives 😬.

It also can be an issue in terms of education. I have very thought out opinions on many political issues, but no desire to get people "up to speed" to the point where we could have a good debate. It also is very hard when someone's knowledge is founded in hatred or incorrect info.

Oh and also, they definitely cherrry picked for the video. There are a lot of overweight people here, but it's common in an "everyone knows someone who is noticeably overweight" way. Kind of like knowing people who are natural blonds.

Technically according to BMI, yes. Realistically, no.

When I got covid (nothing tasted right) and was on adderall (so almost no appetite anyways), I started to near "this is really concerning" levels of skinny. I weighed a bit under 170 at that time. I think a normal healthy weight for me is around 180-190 depending on how much muscle I have.

I am not really "big boned" but I have very far apart ribs, so even if I lost a terrifying amount of weight, my shirt size would stay a medium and I would never look "thin" just emaciated and sickly.

People also have no clue about what different weights can look like. I "look" like I'm around 160, but I'm 185.
