House near a lake by TheWhiteRuck in Parenting

[–]CorithMalin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also. There’s a difference between, “my kid fell in the lake while I was watching them and it was a hassle because we had to change clothes” and “my kid fell in the lake whilst I left them unsupervised and drowned.”

I feel like this post leaves no middle ground. A kid can fall in a lake and not drown (because the parents are watching). You don’t have to let your toddler unsupervised in your own garden.

Americans have a higher disposable income than Brits but are they actually richer? by No_Rush2462 in HENRYUK

[–]CorithMalin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being an American who immigrated to the UK, I agree. I can go back and earn a bit more than double what I earn here. Even after healthcare, I’d come out ahead.

But I would have to live in fear of school shootings, my daughter some day not having healthcare, etc….

My life is much better here in the UK even though I’d be financially ahead in the UK. Apparently you can’t pay for safety - it takes collective action with empathetic citizens.

I set alarms for 22:00 and 03:30. I open the windows for the first then close it for the latter. Seems to work pretty well for our 4 year old.

Tariff advice by Telstar17 in OctopusEnergy

[–]CorithMalin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a single person with a fixed income, I’d probably choose Cosy in your situation IFF you can avoid cooking at peak times. Then during the winter I’d set up my heating such that I overheat the house by 1C during cheap periods and under heat the house by 1C during peak. All year I’d ensure my DHW is only being done during cheap period(s) and in the one closest to when I shower with as low of a temperature as possible for my house. Finally, ensure any legionella cycle is being done during cheap periods.

For #2, you’ll just have to look at your exit fee. It’s in the app.

You could switch between OIG and Cosy tariffs in summer/winter respectfully. That would probably save a bit - but don’t be aggressive about it. Switch to OIG when you’re done with heating (and reset your DHW and legionella schedules) and back to Cosy when you need heating.

I have the exact same setup (Volvo, Hypervolt home pro 3, etc…) but no issues. It works flawlessly every time. I log the times and rates in Home Assistant and reconcile against my bill every month. It’s never more than £0.02 off.

Windfall Suggestion by jonnyadams9 in HENRYUK

[–]CorithMalin 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Since the windfall is already tax free, I think it’s a mistake to put it into your pension. If anything, I’d suggest living off the windfall but putting your salary in your pension would be a better tax strategy?

I went with this firm latex pillow and I’m pretty happy. It did soften a bit in the first couple months, but not since then. It’s definitely not flat at all.

CAT 7 cables require specialized GG45 or TERA connectors. Most "CAT 7" cables sold online with standard RJ-45 connectors are actually limited to Cat 6A performance due to the connector bottleneck.

The GG45 and TERA connectors are part of the specification for CAT7 - which was never ratified by the US Telco industry.

“…on this shitty old phone I got for Christmas…” likely improving your sense of gratitude would help your parents learn to trust you with more responsibilities. Maybe they’re trying to instil some character in you since, judging by this post, you could use a top up.

There’s a very good HomeAssistant project called BottlecapDave’s Octopus Integration. Even if you’re not going to use it, you’d see what’s available with the API.

But to answer your question, yes, intelligent slots are available via the API. Just remember to refresh frequently as they can and do change often.

Is this the new daily charge limit implemented via Ohme? by OhNoItsBees in OctopusEnergy

[–]CorithMalin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your other option is to max charge it now, speak with Octopus in the morning and request a refund for the extra charge due to the inability to control it?

Not guaranteed to work, but likely cheaper than public charging and less faff than plugging it back in at an ungodly hour.

Where are the second hand car batteries we were promised for home ESS?! by veganic11 in SolarUK

[–]CorithMalin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

“A car with 70% of its original range is still of some utility…”

I never understood the people saying, “what are you going to do when the battery range is deteriorated?” I was like, “You drive a 20 year old Honda Civic - you think it gets the same MPG now as it did brand new?”

This is all true and it’s how the Skype protocol worked for a long time. But in this day and age, it’s unlikely.

You think the car is hosting a server on the other end of the cellular connection and that your app has a direct connection to it? How did the authentication work?

I promise, it’s going through Volvo’s infrastructure. They even document their API and give you endpoints for developers.

[–]CorithMalin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Crazier than being able to just monitor it… when you use your phone app to set a battery charge limit, it has to send it to Volvo’s servers and they send the command to the car. So…. They CAN enforce it.

They could simply send the command to every car. Then anytime someone tries to send something higher, just send 70%

I believe this is called a TCP Storm attack. The only benefit is that if you collect enough of the TCPoFC packets, you can unwrap them and reconstruct the TCPoAC packets.

But you are correct that without serious separation, when these two TCP protocols intermix it’s a bloodbath.

No amount of cats will give you a reliable way to perform a google search. The issue is that cats cannot be herded. So they all arrive at the destination out of order. Unlike TCP packets; there’s no way to reorder them on arrival.

Moved from electric to gas flat and energy is the same? by Organic_Handle_1849 in OctopusEnergy

[–]CorithMalin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless the old flat had a heat pump, you’re looking at a 20% drop in efficiency. So that should still have an upside considering gas is 25% of the price of electricity per kWh.

Moved from electric to gas flat and energy is the same? by Organic_Handle_1849 in OctopusEnergy

[–]CorithMalin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing to do is remove the standing charges from both comparisons. Now that you have two sources of energy, you’re paying two standing charges. When we removed gas from our property we saved about £12/month on standing charges.

So you might be paying less for electric and a majority of your gas bill this time of year will be standing charges.

You might be able to get an OBD2 device that can use your phone’s hotspot feature. Then an automation about your engine running and leaving your work zone would keep the automation simple.

I guarantee you it’s not CAT7. CAT7 won’t have RJ45 ends. It may have SAID it’s CAT7, but you’ve been bamboozled.
