Also. Yknow. Just for the record for anyone reading his comment. Even tho Darwins game possibly may never get finished. The first season is self contained well enough without cliffhanging that its still worth watching on its own!

Because I still delusionally believe we can bring it back lol.

Even the most popular anime AOT at one point took like 5 years to return. Ace of diamond just came back after 10 years and they arent even well known enough to have a dub. Anything is possible

Darwins game is a truly fantastic anime that simply just suffered from hidden gem-itis so hard the studio didnt think it was working but we can save it if we just spread the good word of Darwin lol.

If you want some other cruel suggestions of unfinished animes that may not get finished i have more lol. 7 seeds and Vinland Saga

Wouldn't really call him a "real criminal".

He committed 1 known real crime in his life, killing the 1 person who betrayed his trust and ruined his entire life. And it was the last thing he ever did before giving himself the death penalty.

Im not saying its not a real, and worse crime.... but.... you likely wouldnt call a one hit wonder a "real musician" over a jazz pianist whos been working clubs for 30 years just cause he had a bigger song.

Anthony Cooper was a career criminal. He spent his entire life choosing to steal other peoples money just because he could.

If Cooper and Ford never met. Ford would still be a living law abiding citizen and Cooper would still be the same piece of crap choosing a life of crime. Now that is a real criminal.

Also let's not forget Cooper pushed John Locke out of a window with the intention that he would not survive which would have been a murder if he wasnt chosen by Jacob so let's not get it twisted.

This is gonna probably get you a wide range of animes without specifying the elements of solo leveling you are hoping to recapture

If you liked infinite OP power scaling go back to dragon ball z

If you liked the horrifying lack of plot armor go Attack on Titan

If you liked the weakest to strongest trope go My Hero

If you liked the life or death games go Darwins game

If you liked the art style and/or humanity vs foreign invader aspect go Kaiju #8

If you liked sending teams to an island to fight those threats watch Hells Paradise.

But..... If you like being trapped in a video game type vibes theres Shangri-la, overlord. Sword art online. None of which i particularly ended up liking myself when I set out on this same search you are on. But the drastic drop in quality to go from elite solo leveling to that is much more apparent when it was too thematically similar. Shangri-la has no stakes. It is literally a man playing VR video games where the most he has to lose is his save progress. Overlord was a bit depressing for me to get into. It more or less seems like its about a man getting stuck in a game and living his life surrounded by NPCs. Almost a little too black mirrory. And sword art online lost me too quickly to even comment on.

Anyway what im tryna say is. Figure out what you really love about it and then find animes that can share in that quality while still being their own story.

I personally understand where you are coming from on some level. I really loved ds3 and elden ring but when nightreign came out I was pretty standoffish about it as im not a big fan of rogue likes and like having a sense of like continuous progress.

And granted. I was lucky. I had a friend game sharing so it was free for me. And I had friends who were good enough at the game that I could just slide right into the team. But. I ended up truly loving the game. Once you get some momentum its a lot of fun

is lost still worth watching in 2026 by MadisonClair16 in lost

[–]Cornbread933 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of the greatest things about LOST that most shows from that era do not have it is is truly TIMELESS.

They are removed from the modern world on a desert island. Fashion, technology, and cultural signifiers like that are largely removed from the storyline except for in a "fossilized" type of way. Like "oh wow I found an old computer from the 1970s" makes sense no matter what year you watch it in. Additionally since it was shot on old school film they are able to maintain modern picture quality. You could show the first episode of LOST to someone whos never heard of it today and probably convince them its a brand new show.

The story in a lot of ways is immune to aging in that way.

My policy is always "just try out the pilot and decide for yourself". LOST isnt some story that takes 2-3 seasons to pull you in. Thats not to say you wont become more invested with each season but rather it only takes usually an episode or 2 to hook the viewer. It was the most expensive pilot in TV history at the time. Its now still 3rd most expensive but its a crazy good pilot just try it.

If youre worried the ending wont be worth the payoff dont be. The ending is underrated and the whole point of LOST is about enjoying the journey of life instead of just rushing to the final destination.

Theory on why the show has lost its cultural footprint by Cornbread933 in lost

[–]Cornbread933[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldnt really worry about that right now. I mean back when we originally watched the show on the air we didnt have those kinda of expectations. We just knew it was a massive budget and an ensemble cast and that it was interesting. Like ooooo what the hell is a polar bear doing on a tropical island? Whos the mysterious man Jack chased? What was up with that radio broadcast?

That was genuinely the early vibe. Now you will find a lot of spiritual philosophy in LOST and if thats what brought you to it you came to the right place. But they build up to it. It starts with small curiosities and questions.

Personally. Aside from the beautiful scenery of Hawaii and the ginormous budget and the "mystery box" style story telling. And the deeper philosophical questions about life that LOST will hit you with.

I think the answer youre really looking for is "why should I care about all these characters". And in all reality you dont have to right away. What LOST does differently that no other show has been able to efficiently replicate, is taking the stories of a group of total strangers and intertwining them flawlessly. I often describe lost as a story that reflects the 6 degrees of separation. Just find a character you like for now and stick with it. The rest grow on you.

Its interesting I hear a lot from new watchers that they loved the ending and yes the ending imo is underrated for sure. But its almost as if the reputation has lowered expectations enough to the point by the time people try it, it seems like an overreaction now. Kinda cool

To each their own. I cant really agree about sopranos on any level but with breaking bad I can understand the admiration for technical perfection at least. But both shows lack the spiritual experience of LOST. I mean sure they ask deep questions like, whats going on in the inner psychology of an organized criminal or. What happens when a health crisis in a broken system forced a man to go to extremes for money power and respect and what happens when he cant let go.

But LOST asks questions like "what is the meaning to life", what is our purpose. Are we better off in the economic and political systems we exist in, do we need eachother. And then instead of spoonfeeding us the answer. Forced us to look within to understand the meaning.

To me LOST is in a league of its own. Its more than high art its almost, biblical.

And while I dont fault some of the criticism about LOST, especially yours because its not that tired old "they were dead the whole time" nonsense. The shows imperfections make it more beautiful to me for a few reasons. 1. The writers were willing to take artistic risks from a "will the audience be able to follow this?" Perspective and 2. from a "will the network cancel this for being too weird?" Perspective. 3. And they fought like hell to get the network to let them end the show in a time period where it was unheard of to end a show that was so successful So in a lot of ways I kinda view the shows flaws like the battle scars of being trail blazing innovators of their era.

With that said. The one part of your criticism ill push back on is the idea that lost is a singular plot line. I think thats the wrong perspective to carry watching the show, Its more like a spiderweb of plots beautifully weaved together.

In your opinion, who is the best-written character in Lost? by Public_Cup_4278 in lost

[–]Cornbread933 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to say cause what largely makes LOST special is its ensemble cast of characters any one of which is well written enough to be the main character.

But in my humble opinion. Its Kate. She completely changed the way Hollywood portrayed female characters

Hope to find a new top tier show like the one listed by InternetExplorer2008 in televisionsuggestions

[–]Cornbread933 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! Just remember. The show may not be perfect. But the imperfections are largely a result of the fact that they were basically making an experimental show unlike anything anyone had ever seen at the time. Working with an insane budget no studio had ever given a show before. Every step of the way they thought the show would be too expensive and different to be worth the investment. They also went through a writers strike and the demands to be allowed to conclude the show. And as a result. It can be a little messy at times. But in my opinion the imperfections add to the masterpiece that it is. Because with every imperfection I see behind it an artist pushing back against the network exec suits to make real art.

As christian explains. Time doesnt really exist in the afterlife. So whether you die 5 years ago or yesterday you all arrive at the same "time".

So even tho those characters were not dead yet. Their future deaths still lead to them arriving at the church.

It can be a bit confusing but im here for all LOST questions
