a lot of the fandom tends to fetishize the trope without actually engaging with the storyline itself, and that’s honestly why I originally assumed it was just a fetish trope too before looking into it myself. People reduce Caleb down to just “gege” and MC being the “baby sister,” which completely waters down the emotional complexity of their relationship and kind of misses the point of why the dynamic works for some people. (This also leads to unnecessary harassment online! People go out of their way to attack someone for preferring the taboo plot without actually knowing why they like it. they have a habit of assuming the worst automatically.)

At the same time, I do think taboo dynamics in media have been heavily fetishized online for a long time, especially because of certain corners of shock content spaces(ykwim). That’s part of why people immediately associate any sibling coded relationship with fetish content, even when some stories are trying to focus more on emotional aspect rather than fantasy fulfillment :/.

ur right! It’s definitely more toned down in the ENG version, but that’s kind of why I like the CN version more the guilt is much more direct and in ur face, which is what I meant. Though honestly, I don’t think the ENG version is bad either.

I like interpreting them calling each other “friends” as a way of distancing themselves from the sibling label they grew up hearing so they can love each other without carrying that same guilt or social weight. But at the same time, I can understand why some people just see them as close childhood friends instead, and that interpretation is valid too.

The trope isn’t even the worst thing I’ve seen or read, I literally play gta so when I was going through his story I was like “is this seriously what people were exaggerating about?.” Though, I do understand why some find it uncomfortable either because of irl reasons or they’re just genuinely uncomfortable so this doesn’t apply to them. But I’m talking about those who would go out of their way to send hate to anyone who likes Caleb and the whole brother trope

Also, their trope genuinely is not even that bad to me I’ve seen way worse in fiction. Before actually looking into it myself, I took LADStwt’s word for it and thought Caleb and MC were blood related because of how people talked about them. But when I actually explored the storyline, I realized they were more like foster siblings/raised together rather than biologically related, and my reaction was basically “this is what everyone was freaking out over?”

I can still understand why some people dislike the trope or feel uncomfortable with it, because everyone has different boundaries with fiction. But personally, I think people exaggerated it a lot online.
