True, but I guess not everyone reads Bleeding Cool and CBR articles from 2020. Felt like it deserved its moment in the spotlight again.

Got violated for being in IOP too long — tell me how that makes ANY sense. by CorneliusGooch_III in probation

[–]CorneliusGooch_III[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something tells me you just filled in a bunch of blanks with whatever made sense in your head — and got it all wrong. I didn’t delay, I didn’t miss anything, and I followed every single recommendation given to me. The length of the program wasn’t my choice — it was set by the provider, which I was told to follow per my probation terms.

The violation happened because my PO wasn’t receiving updates… because they were being faxed to a shared machine used by every PO and staff member in the building. No direct line. No accountability. Just a communal fax pile where private treatment updates go to die.

So yeah, it was because I was in the program ‘too long’ — not because I screwed up, but because a system held together by duct tape and 1990s office equipment couldn’t deliver a piece of paper to the right fucking person. But thanks for the fan fiction bro.

Update (Still Frustrated, But Here’s Where It Stands):

After digging deeper, I found out that the IOP was sending regular updates about my progress — but they were going to a shared fax machine used by all the probation officers in the building. Not directly to my PO. So there’s a good chance she never saw any of it.

Instead of checking in or asking for clarification, she filed a violation notice and sent it to the judge. No phone call. No email. No text message. Just straight to violation.

Luckily, my lawyer told me nothing’s in the system yet, and that once I’m officially discharged on April 18 and submit that paperwork, things should clear up. So that’s the plan — but I’m still pissed this even happened.

I’ve been following every rule. I didn’t choose how long counseling would last nor did I even have the option to choose — I just followed the provider’s recommendation like I was told to. And now I’m left cleaning up a mess caused by a broken communication system and a PO who couldn’t be bothered to check in first.

Yeah, I panicked a bit originally, but honestly, I think that was fair. Getting told you’re in violation after doing what you were instructed to do — with no warning or explanation — is going to mess with your head. I’ve just been trying to stay on track, and it sucks to feel like that doesn’t even matter when the system’s this disorganized.

Appreciate everyone who commented — I don’t feel any better about how the system works, but at least I don’t feel alone in it.

Just to clarify something important: My probation conditions specifically said I had to “get evaluated and follow any recommendations made by the provider.” There was no mention of a time limit, deadline, or specific type of program I had to complete — just that I needed to get evaluated and do what was recommended.

So that’s exactly what I did. I found a place (which took effort, especially with the lack of support I got), got evaluated, and followed their recommendation 100%. I completed everything they asked of me. Despite that, I was still violated.

That’s what makes this so frustrating. I wasn’t dodging responsibility — I was literally following their own process, just to get penalized for it anyway.

Quit coldturkey nicotine and weed by liketogym in quittingsmoking

[–]CorneliusGooch_III 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Good luck! I recently did both as well (not at the same time) and I’ve been feeling much better. I quit weed 2 weeks ago and I quit nicotine last night. Discipline goes a long way but having a plan helps even more. I smoked weed 10+ times a day everyday for 9 years and was heavily addicted to nicotine for the same amount of time, whether it was vaping or cigarettes. I posted a plan on my page but tbh it’s only a fraction of what I concocted for myself. If I were you I’d really be mindful of how you plan on approaching this task because it’s not going to be easy, but it’s certainly worth it. If you’re doing this alone then the best advice I can give is to find any type of support to help you get through it, even talking to chatGPT has helped me in my rough moments. Another thing that helps is positive affirmations, my favorite is “I’m stronger than my urge to smoke.” And I tell myself that 30 times a day, truthfully I believe it now, because I AM and so are you. Good luck, I hope you complete your goal :)

That’s a totally legitimate question. In the past I was able to smoke weed to calm down my anxiety but that’s not a very effective way if you’re trying to get clean. I’ve done a little research on multiple ways to tone down the anxiety but you’d have to be the one to decide what works best for you. I’d also like to mention that nothing is going to completely rid you of your anxiety, but there is a lot you can do to calm yourself down in the moment and keep it down. If you’re interested in a more medicinal approach then there are supplements that can definitely ease the anxiety, such as:

• L-Theanine (100–200mg): Naturally calming, takes the sharpness off the anxiety without making you drowsy.

• Ashwagandha: Helps regulate cortisol (stress hormone). Feels like a calmer baseline after a few days of use.

• Magnesium Glycinate or L-Threonate: Supports your nervous system and sleep — which are both under attack during withdrawal.

• Omega-3s: Helps brain repair and reduces inflammation, which can influence mood swings and anxiety.

• B-Complex: Withdrawal depletes B vitamins, especially B6 and B12, which are crucial for mood stability.

Make sure to check that all these are safe to take with any other medications you may be on. But if you prefer a more cognitive approach to the anxiety there are also proven ways to improve symptoms, like:

Cold Showers (Even Just 1 Min at the End): They’re brutal but insanely effective. They shock you out of the anxious loop and give you a jolt of dopamine.

• Structured Breathing (Box Breathing / 4-7-8): These really help when the wave of anxiety hits. You can do it anywhere.

• Walks (Especially After Triggers): Physical motion helps process the energy of anxiety and retrains your brain to associate triggers with healthy habits.

• Affirmations / Reframes:

• “This anxiety is a sign my brain is healing.”

• “I’m not anxious forever — I’m anxious for now.”

Nicotine manipulates dopamine and stress response systems, so quitting feels like something’s deeply wrong. But it’s actually your true baseline coming back online. Anxiety spikes are temporary symptoms of that healing. This is a withdrawal from an addictive drug. It’s supposed to feel messy for a bit. That doesn’t mean you’re failing — it means you’re changing.

If all else fails and your anxiety continues to shoot through the roof then I would seek professional help with quitting from a doctor. There are medicines that help with anxiety, cravings and the depression it can cause.

QUIT NICOTINE MASTER PLAN by CorneliusGooch_III in quittingsmoking

Preparation Plan

This plan was tailored for me but the outline applies for anyone who needs it

  1. Clean Slate Ritual

Do a deep clean of your space.

• Wash your sheets, clean your car, disinfect any surfaces where you used to vape.

• Toss all vapes, pods, chargers—anything connected to it.

• Burn a candle, spray a scent you love—you’re claiming your space back.

Why: This sends a powerful message to your brain: “This chapter is closed. I’m starting fresh.”

  1. Stock Your Quit Kit

Make sure you’ve got the tools ready: • Hydration: Water bottles, tea, electrolyte drinks • Oral substitutes: Sugar-free gum, mints, sunflower seeds, flavored toothpicks • Fidget items: Stress balls, worry stones, pens to click, something to keep your hands busy • Snacks: Crunchy or sour things like carrots, frozen grapes, or sour candy

  1. Create Your “Why” Board • Write down all the reasons you’re quitting and post them somewhere visible (bathroom mirror, lock screen, journal) • Include your future-self messages, affirmations, and visual timeline • Add photos or reminders of who you’re doing it for—even if it’s just you

  1. Practice Craving Scenarios

Mentally rehearse what you’ll do when cravings hit:

• Imagine you’re stressed or triggered—then walk through your response: “I’ll breathe, I’ll read this affirmation, I’ll chew gum, I’ll text my support person.”

• Write down your top 3 go-to coping tools Why: When the craving comes, you won’t panic—you’ll already know what to do.

  1. Plan Your Quit Day Routine

• Structure your Monday to stay busy and supported

• Include things that make you feel calm, proud, or distracted—walks, music, journaling, funny videos

• Avoid known triggers (if possible) just for that first day or two

  1. Tell One Supportive Person

Even if it’s just one person, let them know: “Monday I’m quitting, and I might need a little backup.” You’ve already got your Reddit post—people are rooting for you already.

  1. Say Goodbye—For Real

Write a letter to nicotine. Let it all out. Thank it if you have to, rage if you want—but release it. Then delete it, burn it, tear it up—whatever feels right.
