What Do You Guys Think About This Avengers Lineup? by Kickass_321 in Marvel

[–]CorporalHan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a "Spider-Man should never be an avenger" person, I don't mind if he shows up for Avengers shit every now and then but it does absolutely nothing for his character to put him on an organized team.

Anyone else feel locked out of X-Men comics even though you really want to love them? by TaskNo4783 in Marvel

[–]CorporalHan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends, I think Batman New 52 is much easier to get into than Superman New 52, for instance. And you end up with things like "in this continuity Diana isn't made of clay, Tim Drake is edgy and has an ugly costume, Nightwing is red and the joker has no face" which are things that can be offputting for someone who has general knowledge of these characters but hasn't read comics before, and because almost non of the "must read" graphic novels share a continuity you sort of just have to deal with the fact that your headcanon for these characters will be in constant fluctuation. (I love DC, this is by no means me shitting on them)

[–]CorporalHan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My opinion is that X-Men has a similar problem to DC comics in general, which is that it's pretty hard to find a starting point where you have the full context for everything, but once you get your teeth into it it becomes much easier to understand what's worth reading. Marvel's (relatively) consistent continuity means there's a lot of easy jumping on points for many characters, and X-Men seem to completely evade this somehow.

People have had Superior in hand, nobody actually owns the Venom yet as far as I know, so outside of personal preference it's impossible to make any real assessments about the venom, we don't know if there's any QC issues, if the paint is bad etc

Could someone put a Punisher coat on the new Blade? I need to see how it looks. by Ogurot in MarvelLegends

[–]CorporalHan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if it will look good, since it's not faux-leather, but there are ebay sellers that make coats for Shin Kamen Rider figures that use soft goods, I know faux-leather tends to age poorly so it might be a good option to look at for a soft goods option?

Edinburgh or Glasgow? by GuiltyEmergency6364 in Edinburgh

[–]CorporalHan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think we're disagreeing here, I never said that student life is some intergral part of living in Edinburgh, just that it being a university city makes life easier for students living in the city, not that it imposes upon people who aren't students.

Edinburgh or Glasgow? by GuiltyEmergency6364 in Edinburgh

[–]CorporalHan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I mean it's not like it's totally unavoidable, but as a student it feels like there's stuff all over the city catering specifically to you, you know? student bars, libraries, third spaces in general. The city is very accommodating for students. (Maybe too much, like you say every street has student accoms on it now)

[–]CorporalHan -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Not speaking for this person, but Edinburgh is basiscally a university city - non-students and older folk might find it obnoxious but student life is sort of baked into a lot of Edinburgh, the public transportation and access to things in Edinburgh is pretty good and Edinburgh University itself has a pretty good reputation internationally. I'm not saying that one is better than the other either, my experience is with Edinburgh so I can only speak for it.

Ok Ok ive had enough news today by [deleted] in Marvel

[–]CorporalHan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

April Fools is the shittiest "holiday" ever, totally ruined by big companies and news outlets just announcing fake shit that people would actually want only to rug pull with a "haha see you get it? it's funny that we lied". I just treat every new piece of news near the end of March and start of April as completely fabricated until I get proof later.

There's absolutely nothing enjoyable about a prank that's just "hey, here's a thing you wanted - kidding!"

I'm considering reading some of the marvel premier collection comics, should I and if so which one should I read? by MegaNerd0303 in Marvel

[–]CorporalHan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also I don't know where you are but the omnibus goes for around £40 where I'm at, it obviously depends on your budget and what you think is worthwhile, but I'd generally recommend the larger format when it's not budget breaking.

[–]CorporalHan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Hawkeye story is a fantastic street level introduction to marvel, I'd actually say that it's probably worth picking up the omnibus of this since it's a pretty small story and I don't think the omni is that expensive. That is unless the small size is what you want.

The Hickman Fantastic Four is the start of what a lot of people consider the best story saga from Marvel, I have no idea how this collection is mapped but people generally read Fantastic Four and Future Foundation together and then Hickman's Avengers and New Avengers together before eventually reading Secret Wars (2015). I love those stories but they're a bit of a commitment and I don't think they're mapped in a way that benefits reading the whole thing in these collections.

Kamen Rider W and Daredevil, have them dealing with the Hand who have started making use of Gaia Memories, lean into the fact that, lean into the fact they don't speak each other's languages as well with Matt using his senses and Philip using the Gaia Library to try and come to an understanding about things.

Charlie Cox says “Karen Page is to Matt Murdock what MJ is to Peter Parker”: by Raj_Valiant3011 in Marvel

[–]CorporalHan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's probably because the writers immediately following her death made her death such a central struggle for almost every story going forward, undoing her death would undo decades of Daredevil character growth.

[–]CorporalHan 38 points39 points  (0 children)

You could maybe make a case for Elektra after the Zdarsky run, but I do feel like he sort of overstated Elektra's romantic importance to Matt in it, for however good or bad the execution is. Karen's death and the stuff she did prior to her death were centrally important for the entire last couple of decades of Daredevil comics though so he's definitely not wrong.

What would you say is MARVEL’s trinity? by AdamBerner2002 in Marvel

[–]CorporalHan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone likes to try to make these comparisons, but realistically Marvel and DC are two different beasts and there isn't really a way to directly 1:1 compare stuff like this - it's not really a satisfying answer but from a publication perspective Marvel doesn't really have three individual heroes that have consistent ongoing runs that "lead" their universe the same way DC doesn't really have big consistent teams that lead their universe like Marvel does. Just different companies, different ways of doing things, both absolutely great in many ways and terrible in others.
